Vaughan, John, esq. now living at Chilton Grove, near Shrewsbury, married 20th October,1791, Jane, third daughter of Edmund Littlehales(*), esq. of Shrewsbury, and by her, who died 24th January,1824, has issue,

1. John, of the Hon. East India Company's Civil Service, on the Madras establishment, second judge of the Court of Appeal and Circuit, Western division, married 30th May,1828, Catherine Maitland, daughter of John Babington, esq. of the same service and establishment, and by her, (who died 23rd June,1833), has two sons and two daughters, viz: John, Henry, Catherine, Jane.

2. Richard, of the Hon. East India Company's service, Taxing-master of the Supreme Court of Calcutta.

3. William, M. A. of St. John's College, Cambridge, rector of the third portion of Pontesbury, in the county of Salop, and perpetual curate of Astley, near Shrewsbury.

4. Eliza, married to the Rev. Edwin Sidney, A. B. of St. John's College, Shrewsbury.

5. Jane.

Mr. Vaughan succeeded to the representation of this branch of the ancient family of Vaughan upon the demise of his brother. This is the junior branch of the sncient family of Vaughan, whose chief is Sir Robert Williames Vaughan, bart. representative in the present and in many former parliaments of the county of Merioneth.

Bleddyn ap Cynfyn, prince of Powys, and chief of the third royal tribe of Wales, had two sons, Meredith and Cadwgan, who, at the close of the eleventh century, seated himself at Nannau, in the county of Merioneth, which place, from that time to the present day, has continued the residence of one branch of his descendants. Fourth in descent from Cadwgan was Ynyr Vychan, of Nannau, who had two sons, Meuric, ancestor of the family of Nannau (or Nanney) of Nannau, the principal line of which terminated in co-heiress, one of whom, Janet, married Robert Vaughan, esq. and was greatmother of the present Sir Robert Williames Vaughan, bart. See Burke's peerage and Baronetage. And Howel.

From the second son, Howel, descended Howel Vaughan, of Wengraig, in the county of Merioneth, who married Margaret, daughter of Edward Owen, esq. of Hengwrt, and granddaughter of Lewis Owen, esq. one of the barons of the Welsh exchequer, and M. P. for Merionethshire, who was barbarously murdered by a band of robbers near Dinasmowddwy, in the year 1555. The only son of Howel Vaughan, Robert Vaughan, esq. of Hengwrt, the celebrated antiquary, married Catherine, daughter of Gruffydd Nannau, esq. of Nannau, and died 16th May,1667, having issue,

1. Howel, ancestor of the present Sir Robert Williames Vaughan, bart. (See Burke's Peerage and Baronetage.)

2. Ynyr, who was accidentally shot in 1688, s. p.(**)

3. Hugh, who married Elizabeth, daughter of Edmund Meyrick, esq. of Ucheldre.

4. Griffith, of whom presently.

5. Jane, married to Robert Owen, gent. of Dolserey, in Merionethshire.

6. Margaret, married, first, to the Rev. William Price, rector of Dolgellau, and secondly, Robert Vaughan, gent. of Caerynwch.

7. Ellen.

8. Anne.

The fourth son, Griffith Vaughan, esq. was seated at Dolymelynllyn, in the county of Merioneth. He married Catherine, daughter of John ap John ap Robert, gent. of Glyn Maldeu, in the same shire, and dying in August, 1700, was succeeded by his son, John Vaughan, esq. of Dolymelynllyn and Glyn Maldeu, who wedded Catherine, daughter of John Williams, gent. of Penarddwynion, and was father of Robert Vaughan, esq. of Dolymelynllyn and Glyn Maldeu, who married a daughter of John Davies(***), esq. of Trewylan Hall, in the county of Montgomery, and was succeeded by his son, John Vaughan, esq. of Dolmelynllyn. This gentleman espoused Elizabeth, only surviving child of Thomas Parry, gent. of Shrewsbury, by Jane Pritchard(****), his wife, and had issue,

1. Robert, his heir.

2. Thomas, who died 24th April,1803.

3. John, now resident at Chilton Grove.

4. Jane, married first, to Lieutenant-colonel Dennett Milton Woodward, and, secondly, to the Rev. Thomas Stedman, M. A. minister of St. Chad's, Shrewsbury.

5. Catherine, married to the Rev. William Anwyl, of Ashley, in Staffordshire.

Mr. Vaughan served the office of high sheriff of the county of Merionethshire in 1777, and that of mayor of Shrewsbury in 1772. Dying in 1781, he was succeeded by his eldest son, Robert Vaughan, esq. who sold Dolmelynllyn and Glyn Maldeu, (the patrimonial estates of his family), in the county of Merioneth, together with the lands of Llannerch-Hudol, in Montgomeryshire. He entered the military service of his country, and was a captain in the 59th regiment of foot; and at the head of the grenadier company when engaged with the enemy on the Island of St. Vincent's, 15th October,1795, received several wounds, of which he died. He was unmarried, and the line of his family was continued by his brother, the present John Vaughan, esq. living at Chilton Grove.

Arms - Quarterly or and gu, four lions rampant counterchanged of the field; on the centre of the shield, a lion rampant azure.

Crest - A lion rampant azure.

Estates - The ancient possessions of the family having been sold by Captain Robert Vaughan, the landed property of the present Mr. Vaughan has been purchased by himself, and is in Shropshire.

Residence - Chilton Grove, near Shrewsbury.

* - Mr. Edmund Littlehales married Margaret, daughter of Borlase Wingfield, esq. of Preston Brockhurst, in the county of Salop, by Elen, his wife, sister of Sir Rowland Hill, bart. of Hawkstone. He was of the ancient family of Littlehales, of Wyke, in Shropshire, and his cousin, Rowland Littlehales, was father of Miss Mary-Anne Littlehales, now resident at Marlow, near Leintwardine, in Herefordshire; another cousin, Mary Littlehales, married Mr. Woof, and had a son, now living at Wenlock, Salop. Ralph Littlehales, ancestor of the present Sir Edward Littlehales baker, bart. was also of this family.

*** - By this marriage the present Mr. Vaughan is related to Mrs. Davies, now of Trewylan Hall, and to her brother, John Wynne, esq. now of Shrewsbury, who is of the family of Wynne, formerly of Maesmochnant, in the county of Denbigh, which was a younger branch of the ancient and once powerful house of Wynne, of Gwedir, the heiress of which married Robert Bertie, who was created Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven - See Burke's Extinct Peerage.
**** - A sister of Jane Pritchard, the wife of Thomas Parry, married Mr. Hand, of Whitchurch, in Shropshire, and was, through her daughter, Elizabeth, wife of Mr. Langford, of the same place, grandmother of Miss Elizabeth Langford, now resident there, and of the late Rev. Joseph Langford, rector of the first portion of Pontesbury, in Shropshire.
