Some steps and tips


1) In FamilySearch do a Memories "FIND" of the surname in question.  Then see who uploaded the item and contact them.

 
2) In FamilySearch  locate the earliest ancestors on a given family branch in FamilySearch Family Tree
 and then look at the log of recent changes and see who made such changes and contact them.


3) Do a Google search of " <SURNAME>  Genealogy"   (fill in with your surname)


4) Use Social Media to contact persons by the same surname
(for example do a Google search on "XXXXX Family Facebook")  (replace XXXXXX with your surname)


5)  Use this Rootsweb Search and replace "sample_surname" with your own surname of interest:

6) Do a surname search on Wikitree -
