Ann Elizabeth Yancey (1843-1861)

She apparently was living in the John Howe Mebane household in 1850. The US 1850 US Federal Census (Little River, Perquimans County, North Carolina) lists an Ann Elizabeth Yancey (age 6) living in the household of John H. Mebane. Note that her father, Algernon Sydney Yancey, died in 1846, and her mother then married John Howe Mebane. The date of this marriage is unknown, but it is assumed to have occurred after 28 June 1848, the death date of the first wife of John Howe Mebane, Ann Slade Graves Mebane.

Algernon's headstone states Algernon Sidney Yancey born January 28, 1816 died August 27 1816 son of Bartlett and Nancy Yancey. I have looked at it very closely and it is definitely 1816 not 1846.

See Probate information I posted today on Kitchens GenForum. Benjamin and Delphia also had a daughter, Nancy C., who was John J. Harrell's first wife. (John J. Harrell's second wife was Rachel Kitchens, also Benjamin and Delphia's daughter.) Benjamin Kitchens died in April of 1857 according to Probate Records. The children of Nancy C. Kitchens and John J. Harrell are listed on my Kitchens GenForum post.

Caroline Louisa Yancey (1823-1842)

"Mrs. Caroline L. Mebane, wife of Lemuel Mebane died last night. She had been delivered of a child a few days ago, (born dead) and she has been lingering ever since, and on last night she died and will be buried on tomorrow at Yancy’s old place."

Source: Paul A. Haralson Letter 25 December 1842.

This conflicts with her gravestone in the Yancey Family Cemetery (Yanceyville, Caswell County, North Carolina) that gives 24 March 1842 as her death date. It appears that the stone mason made an error as the Paul Haralson letter was written contemporaneously with the death of Caroline L. Graves Mebane. And he would have been very interested in the event because his wife was related to the Yancey family. The mother of Caroline Louisa Yancey was Nancy Graves. Thus Leannah Graves Haralson and Caroline Louisa Yancey were first cousins.

The 'A' in the name is 'Anderson'; this is proved by a Deed of Gift made 20th January 1815 by William Miller, Robert Yancey's half-brother-in-law, to his "... infant nephews ... heirs of Robt. Yancey ...". The fantastic, multiple names of Robert's children are all specified in the document. Source: Pulaski, Kentucky, Deed Book 3, pp. 157-159.

Herman I. May 2006-03-01 10:08:52

I have an interest in researching Gilley ALSTON for three reasons.

1) She is the daughter of Winifred (MAY) ALSTON who in turn is the daughter of William MAY. William is brother to my direct ancestor, James MAY.

2) Her first marriage was to a man named Reuben Thomas LOGGINS. Reuben was the nephew of my GGGgrandfather, Daniel LOGGINS.

3) Gilley married a second time to my GGgrandfather, Drury G. MAY. This union was the second for both and they were second cousins to one another

While I descend through Drury's first marriage, to Margaret THIGPEN, I have an interest in Gilley as she creates a focal point for three lines of interest in my research - as indicated above. Reuben and Gilley had four (of six) children that survived into adulthood, while Drury and Gilley only had one. All of these children married and produced offspring. I am interested in making contact with any surviving descendants. Please feel free to contact me at the address above.

Trying to track the grandson of Lucy and James Clark(e)..find her with her grandson, James H. Gordon in the 1880 census - Mecklenburg..they are living together.

Assume he is the son of one of the daughters...Elizabeth or Lilly is still living at the home with Lucy and James Clark(e) and James Gordon is in the home with them in the 1870 census. He is 9 years old according to the census.

He married, I believe, Mary Ann Pool, b. abt. 1861-1862 of Granville Co., NC and they lived in Virgilina, Va. (Halifax Co., VA). I believe he is the one who became a minister, and organized the Nelson Baptist Church (1st known as White Wing Baptist) in Nelson, Va. in 1893. According to a book Along the Border, he served as minister until 1907 and continued as a member until 1914. Name of church was changed to Nelson Baptist in 1913.

Looking for his parents....and what happened to his children.....Mary A. Pool is the sister of James Seth Pool, my great grandfather. They are the children of Noble Alexander Pool and Nancy G. Daniel.

Died in Charlotte, Mecklenburg, NC. Buried in Elmwood Cemetery.

One of Charlotte's Most Prominent and Influential Men Passes Away after a Long and Painful Sickness. Hon. Rufus Y. McAden is dead. His death occurred at his home in this city, last night, at 11 o'clock, the ending of a long and painful attack of sickness. He was stricken down about twelve months ago with an attack of Brights disease, from which he never recovered, although at one time last fail he had so far improved as to be able to walk out on the streets. It was thought then that he had mastered the disease and would soon be himself again, but these hopes were blasted, for he experienced a relapse that ended in his death. Mr. McAden was in his 56th year, and no man was more prominent in thet affairs of the city than he was. He was born in Caswell county, and moved to Charlotte in 1867, since which time he has been thoroughly identified with the people of this section. He started in life a poor boy, but being endowed with an energy and determination of purpose, he worked his way up successfully, and by his own exertions amassed a comfortable fortune. He was president of the First National Bank for 23 years, and built up one of the finest and most extensive milling properties in the South--the McAden Mills, at Lowell. His business sagacity was remarkable, and he made a success of everything to which he turned his hand. During his lifetime, he filled many positions of public trust, and served in each and all with signal ability. He was a member of the State Convention in 1861, and served as Speaker of the House of Representatives in 1866, in which capacity he won a most enviable reputation. Mr. McAden was a great railroad builder and was one of the leading spirits in the construction of the Air Line road. He conceived the idea for the construction of the Asheville & Spartanburg road, and the building of that road is a monument to his energy and enterprise. He was truly a valuable citizen. He was a kind and genial companion, a true friend, and a good man in all the relations of life. The death of such a man can only be looked upon as in the light of a public calamity. Our city will miss him and our State will miss him. Mr. McAden was a member of the present board of aldermen, and a meeting of the board will be held at 4 o'clock this afternoon to pass resolutions of respect to his memory. The funeral services will be conducted from the residence, in the First National Bank building, at 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. The friends and acquaintances are invited to attend.

Hello Dennis,

It appears to me that Susannah Butler Rice was the widow of Nathan Rice, son of "Old John" Rice of Caswell County, NC. This is not a matter of major importance since there were no children involved in the marriage to Wiley Yancey.

I have been surfing sites which mention Elizabeth wife of Thornton Yancey as Mitchell, which you have also noted.
I do know that Wiley Yancey and Judith Ligon's daughter Elizabeth was the wife of Thomas Boswell who married her 22 December 1819 in Caswell County, NC. Thomas and Elizabeth had a number of children, among whom was a Romulus Saunders Boswell, an unusual name. If you go back to the mother of Yancey, Elizabeth Mitchell, it is not hard to comprehend that the name may have come from a Mitchell/Saunders link, when you know that the name of another Caswell County noteworthy individual, Romulus Mitchell Saunders, could explain the use of the name. If you have any ideas about this, I would like to hear from you.

Bartlett Yancey, age 16, born TN, is found in House #1198 on the 1860 Northern Division, Tippah Co., MS census, living with his aunt and uncle, Penelope Caroline Yancey and Absalom W. McCauley. By 1870 Absalom W. McCauley has died and Penelope Caroline Yancey McCauley is enumerated as P. C. McCauley, age 60, born NC, on the 1870 Tippah Co., MS census. Her daugher, G. Ann, age 22 is living with her.

On the 1860 Tippah Co., MS census the house above the McCauleys, House #1197, my third great grandmother, Mary H. Yancey Graves, born ca. 1805 NC is living with her brother-in-law, R. D. (Ralph) Graves, age 45, born TN. She was the widow of John Graves, who died 1841 in Fayette Co., TN. Included in the household are her daughter, Julia A. Graves and her son John W. Graves, who married Nancy E. Rutherford in Tippah Co. in 1869.

On the 1870 Marshall Co., MS census in House #359, Mary H. Yancey Graves, age 64, born NC is living next to her brother-in-law, Ralph D. Graves, age 59, born TN. Included in his household is his nephew, John W. Graves, John's wife, Nancy (nee Rutherford) and their 7 month old son, Phillip H. Graves.

The information on his father and his mother's maiden name, Yancey, are found in Phillip Yancey Graves's biographical information on the White Co., AR web page.

In 1850 Mary H. Yancey Graves and her three children are on the Civil Division 12, Fayette Co., TN census.

Mary H. Yancey Graves died after 1880 in White Co., AR. On the 1880 White Co., AR census, she is living with her son, Phillip Yancey Graves, who was born 30 Oct 1830 TN and died 6 Aug 1908 White Co., AR. He and his wife, Elizabeth (nee Tingle) Hollis Graves are buried in Antioch Cemetery, Antioch, White Co., AR.

I descend from Phillip Yancey Graves and Elizabeth Tingle's daughter, Penelope Graves, who married Milton Parker, both of whom died in Little Rock, Pulaski Co., AR.

I've looked for Mary H. Yancey Graves's parents for twenty years. Any help would be appreciated. The only parents I can come up with are Phillip Yancey and his 2nd wife, Agnes/Agatha. That would make Mary H. Yancey Graves a half sister to Joel Chandler Yancey, who was also living in the 12th Civil District of Fayette Co., TN in 1850. She would also be a half aunt to Penelope Caroline Yancey McCauley.

CALLIE KITCHENS was born March 20, 1869 in Alabama, and died January 18, 1951 in Amory (Monroe County), Mississippi. She married JOHN RILEY LEDBETTER December 30, 1891 in Tippah County, Mississippi, son of WILLIAM RILEY LEDBETTER and MARTHA ANN FARRIS. He was born June 24, 1868 in McNairy County, Tennessee, and died March 25, 1933 in New Albany (Union County), Mississippi.

CENSUS: 1900 Federal Census (Union County, MS), p. 242A; 1910 Federal Census (Union County, MS), ED 106, Sheet 5B; 1920 Federal Census (Union County, MS), 153B.

In the 1870 Federal Census, Callie is listed as Eliaza. In the 1880 Federal Census, she is listed as Mary. She was probably Mary Callie Kitchens. However, she was called Callie by friends and family.

My father has fond memories of his grandmother, Callie Kitchens Ledbetter. She had a fine sense of humor and was a very good cook. My father especially liked her biscuits, teacakes, and "canned" sausages.

OBITUARY: MRS. CALLIE LEDBETTER - SERVICES ARE TODAY FOR NEW ALBANY RESIDENT - Services for Mrs. Callie Ledbetter, who died here at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W.C. Harris, will be held at 2 Friday at the Glenfield Methodist Church near New Albany. The Rev. George Williams and the Rev. A.L. Davenport will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Ledbetter, who was 81, was born in Alabama, but had spent most of her live in Union County, Miss. She was a Methodist. She also leaves three sons, Clifton L. Ledbetter of Memphis, Bonnie Ledbetter of New Albany, and Emmett Ledbetter of Jackson, Tenn.

Burial: Glenfield Cemetery, Union County, Mississippi

The following was told to me by my father (E.J. Ledbetter, Jr.)--grandson of John Riley Ledbetter (September 1999):

John Riley Ledbetter was a farmer in the Glenfield community of New Albany, Union County, Mississippi. He was a fairly prosperous farmer (for that time) who also had his own blacksmith shop. He grew cotton, corn, hay, and always had a sorghum patch (for molasses making). Buildings on the farm included a smokehouse and a storm cellar with a tin roof. John Riley was holding cotton until it reached 40 cents a pound. Then, the Depression hit and the price of cotton plummeted. My dad (E. J. Ledbetter, Jr.) and his cousin, Boo Boo (Aunt Cecil's son), would play on the cotton bales. After John Riley's death in 1933, the cotton was sold and brought only 10 cents a pound. John Riley preferred to keep his money hidden around the house in various locations. One location was in the crank telephone! He enjoyed music on the Victrola (a favorite song was "Bully of the Town") and could play the fiddle. He was well-liked in the community and an active member of Glenfield Methodist Church.

John Riley Ledbetter was tall (around 6 ft.), fairly slender, and wore glasses in his later years.

OBITUARY: IN MEMORY OF JOHN RILEY LEDBETTER - On Saturday morning, March 25, 1933, Uncle John Riley Ledbetter departed this life of sorrow and suffering to take up his abode in the eternal home of God. After almost six months of suffering, being confined to his bed most of the time, the end came peacefully and calm. Uncle John was born June 24, 1864. In young manhood he was married to Miss Callie Kitchens and unto this union were born four children, three boys, Bonnie and Emmit of Glenfield, Clifton of Memphis, and Mrs. Cleve Harris of Amory. Besides his wife and children, he is survived by four brothers, Jim Ledbetter of Booneville, George of Paris, Texas, Dock of Glenfield and Rev. Sam T. Ledbetter of Ripley, also four sisters, Mrs. J.C. Young, Corinth, Mrs. E.J. Keeton, Wheeler, Mrs. Taylor Moore, Tupelo and Mrs. John McCarthy, Baldwyn. In attempting to say a few things in regard to his noble life, I would not dare to say that he was a perfect man, or that he had no faults. Uncle John, himself, would not want me to do that, but I will say that he was possessed with the attributes of an honest, upright Christian gentleman. He was truthful in all things and dealt fair with his fellow man. A worthy father and husband and one who provided well for his family. He minded his own business and let the other fellows alone. . . After funeral services held at the Glenfield Methodist Church, of which he was a member, by his pastor, Rev. A.W. Bailey, and Bro. J.H. Holder, his body was laid to rest beneath a beautiful mound of flowers in the Glenfield Cemetery. Goodby, Uncle John, in a few short years/We'll meet again where there are no tears/With Christ and our loved ones who've gone on before/We're expecting to live to part never more. His nephew, Rev. George H. Ledbetter, Hickory Flat, Miss.

Burial: March 26, 1933, Glenfield Cemetery, Union County, Mississippi

Mr. Newton Yancy, a life-long citizen of Sarepta, died at his home on December the 7th, very suddenly. His son, Fred, found him dead at the barn. Mr. Yancy was approximately 83 years of age. He was a Master Mason, a member of the Baptist church, having joined both more than fifty years ago. He lived at the place where he died for over 35 years, and was a powerful factor in the development of the community, in fraternal progress and in Christian work. He was truthful, he was just and he was fond of his friends to a remarkable degree.
We could say a great many kind things about Mr. Yancy truthfully- and we are sincerely sorry that in some way we failed to learn of his death until this week.
His friends were legion, and his standing in his community was that of a high-grade, honest, intelligent and sympathetic gentleman. We regret to note his passing- and know that the community and the county has lost a man worth while. Peace to his ashes.

I've found a brief marriage for Verla Jean Yancey. Sometime in 1950 she married Melvin Herbert Forslund. The source of this is correspondence between her sister Thelma Idetta Yancey and father Orval Yancey. Orval and Thelma both talk about the marriage. Orval and Thelma both spoke with Melvin personally. Melvin's birthday is 13 Apr 1908 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah. His death was 23 Jul 1977 in San Francisco, San Francisco, California. Source on this info is The SSDI and California Death Index.

Verla divorced Melvin within a year. I have a letter dated 13 Oct 1950 from Orval to Thelma wherein he talks about receiving a wire from Verla about her marriage. In a letter dated 12 Dec 1950 Thelma tells Orval that she had talked to Melvin on the phone and that he seemed very nice.

On 19 Feb 1951 Orval wrote to Thelma that Verla was getting tired of Melvin. He had been drafted into the Army for the Korean War and Verla was determined to divorce him. On 5 Dec 1951 Orval writes to Thelma about Verla and Mel, "She says she doesn't have or know where Mel is and he won't work - and she won't keep him."

This brief marriage produced one child. My mother knew him very well and I have photographs of him. He eventually married a Mitchell and had at least one son born 15 Apr 1975.

I grew up across the way from the Yancey's in Buckingham Co VA and knew Paluine all of my life and attended her funeral. You have a wonderful site and I have used some of your info. I do research on my family (Hudgins, Davis, Stinson, Snoddy) but have not published it on the Web yet. Thanks and keep up the great work.

I'm Hattie Yancey's grandson, I have info from Mary B's family members that her maiden name was Deason. Another of George's daughters, Mildred, was married Alfred Monroe Stout. I think that's where the confusion about the "Stout" surname for Mary B. came from. Mary B. was also sometimes called "Mollie". That's what her name was on the 1900 census. According to the 1920 census, George was living with daughter Mildred and her husband Alfred M. Stout in Wichita Falls, TX. I have a couple of old photos of "Grandpa Yancey" which were taken in the early 1940's. I hope this helps to clear up some confusion.

this is my 3rd great grandmother, I am close to nailing down this connection. Just as the courthouse was closing today, I found a land deed between Elizabeth J. McLain & Matthew G. McLain and Elizabeth Dent. The parents sell the daughter a piece of land " being the same land sold by Peggy Appleberry to Nathaniel Harlow and devised to Elizabeth J. Yancey who afterward married the said M. G. McLain."

It has been stated that her parentage was probable but not documented. I will look up the appropriate wills and subsequent transfers of this land, but I am satisfied at this point that the connection is valid! Will update later...

Edward Dural MOORE b.abt 1825-26 VA is my 2nd g-grandfather he had other brothers and sister that I will post under his parents Littleberry MOORE b.abt 1803-04 VA (Littleberry is 57 b.VA in 1860 Trigg Co Census as LB MOORE)
Edward Dural mother Mary Baker YANCEY, MOORE b.abt 1807-08 VA (she is 46 1850 as MARY B.MOORE ky.,56 1860 as M.B,MOORE VA.,63 should be 66 1870 Mary J.MOORE should be "B",,in 1880 age 76 as Mary B.MOORE VA all these census was in TRIGG Co Ky.) In the 1870 Mary J.(B) Yancey MOORE daughter was living with her PERMEILA F.MOORE age 25 she m.a Joseph MARQUESS Dec.08,1888 Trigg Co KY she use Pamela F.Moore on marriage record. Permelia MOORE is on 1850 census as P.F.MOORE,, if you look Mary B.YANCEY had a sister name PERMELIA T.YANCEY

Edward Dural MOORE parents and some sister & brothers ended up in Trigg Co Ky (county seat CADIZ KY on the other line of this Trigg Co Ky is Stewart Co TN, which is right next to each other some Yancey,Moore and others that married into these families was next door to each other but some was in KY others in TN I have been there so you would have to see it to believe it) this Trigg Co KY County form from Christian Co Ky & Caldwell Co Ky in 1820. Caldwell Co Ky (county seat Princeton Ky) was form from Livingston Co Ky in 1809,Livingston Co Ky (county seat now is Smithland Ky) form from Christian Co Ky in 1798,
Christian Co Ky (county seat Hopkinville) form from Logan Co.Ky in 1797,Logan Co.Ky (county seat Russellville) form from Lincoln Co VA now ky 1792,,Lincoln Co VA now Ky ( County seat Stanford Ky) form from KENTUCKY CO VA.1780
This gives you a idea why some families may be in one County one year and the next year in a different County it just maybe they never move the County Lines did. I have all of the Counties here of Ky and when they form if anyone needs that.

Edward Dural MOORE did have 4 marriage he is on census as Edmond D.MOORE 1870 age 44 Trigg Co kY 3rd wife Sarah A.BOREN age 33, he is on census 1880 Trigg Co KY. with Mother MARY BAKER YANCEY, MOORE head of houswhole Edward MOORE 54 and 4th wife census saids daughter in-law MARTHA (Elizabeth A.BOREN) MOORE age 40 with children do not know why they but down MARTHA. Her nick name was BERTTIE/BETHIE.

The Elizabeth A.BOREN that is down on this site that marry Edward DURAL MOORE on 28 Mar 1841 Ky
is not right this is her birth day she is 4th wife she married Edward Dural/Dual MOORE on 28 Dec 1875 Trigg Co KY.they are my 2nd g-grandparents. I do now Know who is first wife that was another marriage beforen Lucinda DOOLEY.I found this marriage Oct 2,2007 in the TNN marriage book I will write this new information of 1st wife down below.

ELIZABETH A.(BOREN) MOORE b.March 28,1841 d.1906 Trigg Co KY wife of DUAL buried in COX Cemetery Trigg Co Ky parents JAMES BOREN Sr.& Martha COX.

Also son they have here Simeon Edward MOORE has Elizabeth A.BOREN son no he is 2nd wife Lucinda M.DOOLEY she married Edward Dural MOORE on 5 Sept 1855 Trigg Co Ky.
What it saids here is that Edward m.Elizabeth on March 28, 1841 ( was really marry on Dec 28,1875) but Simeon Edward MOORE was b.March 11,1859 Trigg Co Ky d.Jan 15 1930 Trigg Co Ky buried in ED MOORE CEMETERY with other family members (on 1870 Trigg Co Ky as Edward S.Moore age 11) ,,he m.Amy G.FUTRELL b.FED 17,1855 d.Jan 9,1911 Trigg Co Ky. (I will get his death record to see if the parents are on it and let you know)

1st Edward Dural MOORE m.Susan J.BARBER. (Edward Dural Moore had a brother Samuel Nelson MOORE that m. a Martha A.BARBER on Aug.4,1870 he had sister Rosella C.MOORE that m. a James H.BARBER on Dec.29,1867)
Here is Susan J.Barber and Edward D.MOORE marriage record.I know it the right Edward D.MOORE because of his bondsman.

MOORE,Edward D. to Susan J.BARBER - issued June 17,1853 Bondsman William B.YANCY. John GOLD J.P.,June 19,1853.Montgomery Co TN.

(Could this be William Baker Yancey? Who is his parents? I am thinking he maybe a cousin to Edward D.MOORE)

child with first marriage and maybe more children? Child is.(NOTICE the middle name of Child is the same as mothers.)

1.Mary Jane MOORE b.abt 1853-54 Trigg Co KY m.
John Cullen HARGROVE 19 Dec 1875 Trigg Co KY.
Mary J.MOORE is 16 on 1870 census Trigg Co KY

Edward D.MOORE m. Lucinda Dooley in 1855 so this means Mary Jane MOORE was born around 1854 than this means Edward D.MOORE first wife Susan J.BARBER is her mother not Lucinda Dooley but So here where someone wrote down first wife was Elizabeth A.BOREN m.1841 not right she is 4th wife and someone had her birth down for a marriage record it was just a mistake not unless someone can find another Elizabeth A.BOREN.but Edward D.MOORE would have been about 16 if he married a Elizabeth A.Boren in 1841)

2ND. wife Lucinda M.DOOLEY m. on 5 Sep 1855 Trigg Co KY. b.1820-30 Manry Co TN .I need to check 1860 census for them in Trigg Co ky or other Ky Co or Stewart Co.TN ? Children are.

Marry a 2nd time to Neadom Edward RAMSEY b.Sept 30,1850 d.June 7,1926 Union Hill Cem.Trigg Co Ky. Cordelia is on 1870 census age 8.

George Blain MOORE b.1880 Trigg Co Ky d.March 24,1934 Christian Co KY buried in Riverside Cem Christian Co KY.I do believe there is more children have found in Cox & Boren Cem.I will check this and look at census 1890 & 1900 Trigg Co Ky. I will write the other children down if I am right.

On orginal census in 1880 Head of House Mary B.MOORE 76 V V V Edward MOORE 54 son V V V Elizabeth MOORE 40 D-I-L KY TN NC,, Henry MOORE 16 G-SON K V V, IDA J.MOORE 11 G-DAU K V V,,MARTHA E.MOORE 9 G-DAU K V V,, GEORGE B.MOORE 1 month G-SON K V V ( On the type census that some one did she mis read and type Martha MOORE age 40 parents father TN mother NC same as JAMES BOREN SR TN and MARTHA COX, BOREN NC parents of Sarah A.BOREN & Elizabeth A.BOREN. I thinks what happen you can clearly see the E and down below was Martha E. MOORE 9 daughter of Sarah A.BOREN MOORE 3rd wife it is hard see the name Elizabeth A.(BOREN)MOORE but that is what is writen on Orginal census I knew something was wrong and I had the orginal census this whole time and took this person that type it up as true but it is not Martha it is Elizabeth.
The last son on 1880 census GEORGE B.(Blain) MOORE b.1880 he is my g-grandfather I have his death record now on it was hard to read it said BURAL/DURAL MOORE b.VA. has his father mother BERTTIE/Bethie BOREN/BOUREN I am sure this is a nick name for his mother ELIZABETH A.BOREN 3rd wife to Edward Dural/Durl MOORE also on the Type Census thought they thought it was MARTHA MOORE but on the orginal Writing Census 1880 Census TRIGG Co Ky it is Elizabeth MOORE 40 KY..
My grandfather Lucian Garland MOORE gave the infromation about his father George B.MOORE my grandfather could not read, write or spell to good. It saids on death record George B.MOORE was a stone cutter.I heard he did make Grave stones out of Limestone and Carve also Wooden Crosses.

Children: SHENKS, Isaac N., age 15, born in Missouri

SHENKS, Mary E., age 7, born in arkansas
SHENKS, Benjamin W., age 2, born in Arkansas

Further Research Recommendation:
Search for marriage record in Missouri for Isaac and Margaret.

This census record likely proves that Isaac and Margaret were married in Missouri before 1865 since that is when the first child on this census was born.
This census record also indicates that this family moved to Arkansas from Missouri after 1869. Mary BROWN's birthdate of 1873 makes this a perfect match to be her.

Marriage Record:
B.F. Ratliff age 24 to Mary Shenk, age 18, on June 3, 1892 - Ceremony took place on June 6, 1892.

Permelia Frances MOORE,MARQUESS is on the 1920 Trigg Co Ky Census as Permelia/Amelia MARCUS 72, Permelia Frances MOORE,MARQUESS-MARCUS was widow living on the Poor Farm with other families. It does have her born in VA father born in VA mother born in VA. This age is off I believe her to be born bet 1840-1843
Permelia Frances MOORE m.Joesph MARQUESS on 08 Dec 1888 Trigg CO Ky,.
Permelia as MARCUS widow die at age 88 born 1839 Kentucky (she was born in Mecklenburg CO.Virginia) father (Littleberry) as "Berry" MOORE born Virginia mother don't know (mother Mary Baker YANCEY) Permelia MARCUS wife of (Joseph) as "Joe" MARCUS (MARQUESS) the person that gave the information was Ed MOORE which is Simeon Edward "Ed" MOORE Permelia nephew son of Edward Dural MOORE and 1st wife Susan Jane BARBAR,Permelia was buried in MOORE Graveyard but I am sure it was ED MOORE CEMETERY in Trigg CO Ky. She die as Permelia MARCUS on Oct 26 1927 in Cadiz Trigg CO KY. Address Cadiz Ky It also sign to the right of death record is a N.C.or F ? MARQUESS.
Permelia/Parmelia age is off a little on death record.I am thinking her nephew did not know her real age. On 1860 Trigg CO Ky she was 19 VA on the 1870 Trigg Co ky census she was 28 VA.This shows she was born bet 1841-1842 VA.

I wrote you under William H. Allen...perhaps I should write
you here also, since I am trying to prove Sarah. Could you
tell me where you found Wm. H. Allen and Sarah's marriage
bond. I tried N.C. State Library & they said they were not listed. I gave the date you have/1822. My Sarah (S.) was 76 in the Smith Co., Tenn. the age is same as yours. Her children with Wm.H. Allen were Martha B. (Kitrell), James T. Allen, John Y. Allen & George W. Allen. It appears they moved to Tenn. after 1840. Wm. H. was listed as a house carpenter in the 1850 census & there was a couple in their 70's with last name Harris living next door. I "think" William Harris. Can't reach my book at moment. I'm thinking perhaps with the flourishes a quill pen made back then..the S may have looked like an L. Hopefully, that is the case. Kind regards, Judith

James Yancy BAYNES and Nancy ? had to at less married abt 1783 to have children that married in 1810 and 1815 Livingston CO Ky and Caldwell CO KY.

I found one more son of James Yancy BAYNES and Nancy?
is John BAYNES b.abt 1793 SC
John BAYNES m. Elizabeth BARNES 8 Nov 1815 by Warham EASLEY,JP (bond 7 Nov 1815) bonds man James BAYNES Caldwell CO KY.
Elizabeth BARNES was b.abt.1798 NC.

I believe this John BAYNES was on a court records in Livingston CO KY 21 Aug 1824 Articles of Agreement between Richard ARCHER and Stepehne ARCHER by Robert TRIPLETT ,their attorney, and John BAYNES.For the consideration of $1,ARCHERS lease to BAYNES 200 Acres on SANDY cREEK waters of Cumberland River, being the northern part of 1000 acres owned by ARCHERS and patented to John SCOTT,for 5 years .The remanider (800 acres) to be held in possession of and benefit of ARCHERS.BAYNES tp deliver sd.200 acres when ARCHERS require it.Lease may be ecteded if agreeable to ARCHERS.BAYNES required to clear, fence, and tend at least 5 acres and have erected a log dwelling house with good clapboard roof,a smokehouse, and stable by 1 July 1825 /s/ John (x) BAYNES,Richard ARCHER,Stephen ARCHER,by Robert TRIPLETT,attorney. TEST John F.MACURDY Rec 21 Aug 1823.
John BAYNES is on the 1830 Livingston CO Ky Census with brother Yancey BAYNES.

In 1850 John BAYNES and Elizabeth BARNES moves to Coahoma Mississippi and brother Thornton BAYNES age 41 maybe first wife Polly JONES die or he was visting his brother John.

on census
1850 Mississippi Territory Coahoma Co.

Elizabeth 52 NC
Ebenezer 22 Ky
Nancy 16 Ky
Rufus 14 MS (Rufus came back to Liv,CO KY and m.Mary RAY 10 Oct 1856 Liv.CO KY Rufus die in Liv.CO KY 12 July 1907 bur in Goodhope Cem.)
Charlotte 11 MS
Amanda 9 MS
Thornton BAYNES 41 kY B.abt 1809

Also looks like a son of John BAYNES and Elizabeth BARNES name James BAYNES age 33 living in MS also close to his fatehr with family.
marilyn wilkey 2011-05-22 10:50:35
I belive James Yancey BAYNES was born abt 1770 VA married abt 1794 NC? Nancy b.abt 1780 one their oldest daughter Elizabeth BAYNES married Williamson BOYKIN in 1810 Caldwell CO KY. Her father James (Yancey) BAYNES gave consent so she was under 18 years old.
James (Yancey) BAYNES was on the 1830 Livingston CO Ky census
males 1 under 5 ?maybe grandson , 2 males over 10 under 15 maybe grandson or son Andrew Jackson BAYNES b.1815-1816 (could be a son of Yancey BAYNES?, Andrew Jackson BAYNES m. Harriet BRASWELL 30 April 1839 Liv.CO. Ky.) other male over 10 under 15 son James BAYNES b.abt 1814-1815, 1 male over 15 under 20 maybe Thornton BAYNES,1 male over 20 under 30 maybe Isham C.BAYNES or William BAYNES, 1 male over 50 under 60 James Yancey BAYNES, females, 2 females under 5 maybe two grandaughters,1 over 10 under 15 female maybe Louisa Jane BAYNES,1 female over 15 under 20
maybe daugther in -law Rhoda JOHNSON or daugther in-law Gatsy ALLEN, 1 female over 40 under 50 Nancy wife of James Yancey BAYNES.
next door to James Yancy BAYNES is son-in-law John BARNES he married Nancy BAYNES in 1829 Livingston CO KY it looks like Nancy was born abt 1800-1808 only one son under 5 could be her son the other children here could not be Nancy so I believe John BARNES was married to some one before Nancy BAYNES.
males 1 male under 5,1 male 5-10,1 male 10-15.1 male 30-40 John BARNES, 1 female 5-10,1 female 20-30 Nancy BAYNES,BARNES.

On the same census is Yancey BAYNES that married Polly HIGGS and brother John BAYNES that married Elizabeth BARNES the BAYNES brothers are living next to each other.

Charles Donald Yancey is not a son of Donald Halley Yancey.

A "Charles Arthur Yancey" is expressly mentioned in the last will and testament of my father, Donald Halley Yancey.

I have reason to believe Charles' mother was Lois Warner and that Lois committed suicide by ingesting mercury shortly after Charles' birth.

The first time I saw Charles was in 1949 in Glendale, CA. The last time I saw Charles was circa 1962. He had red hair and freckles and was married with one child (an infant).

The last place of residence that I know of for Charles was Spokane, Washington in the 1960's.

You list the name Samuel Yeargan twice and do not list their son Benjamin Yeargan. My daughter-in-law is a descendent of Andrew Yeargan's son Jarratt. She has a lot of info on the Yeargan family that you do not have. I have told her about the info you have on Rootsweb.

You are correct that Yancey was her married name. Spouse was William L. Yancey, Jr., who apparently predeceased her. They were married 17 June 1951 in Baltimore, MD. Believe William may have been grandson of Elisha Columbus, but need to confirm.

Milton P. S. Yancey and his second wife, Elizabeth H. Baggett, had a third son, Josiah Milton Yancey, born January 7, 1866, in Alabama (probably Loachapoka) and died September 23, 1944 in Mineola, Wood County, Texas. He was the their only child who grew to adulthood whose children we know: Josiah Milton Yancey married Georgia E. __, and their known children are buried in the family plot with him: Willie Yancey, daughter, who married J. F. Malone, Milton George Yancey, Oliver Josiah (Joe) Yancey, Thomas David (Tom) Yancey, and Queenie E. Yancey. These all are buried in Mineola City Cemetery, inside the city limits of Mineola, Wood County, Texas. We do not know of any children born to Willie and her husband, J. F. Malone.

The date of death of Robert Yancey should be considered purely speculative. The last known document executed by him was his appointment of Josiah Evans as his attorney "... to attend the Paymaster who may be appinted to pay off the Troops Commanded by General Hopkins for services rendered in the year [1812] ...", and so on. I am aware of no later document bearing the name or signature of Robert Yancey. The fact that his wife, Jane (Coulter) Yancey, was listed as a Head of Household in the Census of 1820 does not prove his death. Source: Pulaski County _____ Book __, p. 129.

Life's Weaving

Reuben Isaac Yancey's birthday should be June 6, 1864 instead of June 6, 1860. He was the son of Andrew Wilson "Andy" and Margaret Elizabeth (Johnston) Yancey. Margaret was Andy's second wife. The birthday information is from Sandra Oliver, granddaughter of Reuben Isaac Yancey, daughter of Lula I. D. "Johnnie" (Yancey) Hallmark. She would like for his birthday and parentage to be corrected. She stated that the the grave stone is incorrect.

Reuben Isaac Yancey born: June 6, 1864, Dekalb County, Alabama, died: September 9, 1935, Haleyville, Winston County, Alabama, buried. September 10, 1935, Liberty Cemetery, Dekalb County, Alabama.

Sandra is not on the internet, and she asked me to let you know about this error.
