The above chart shows the general migration out of Virginia where the first Yancey families resided into neighboring states stuch as SC, NC, KY, TN, GA in the early 1800's and West to states like TX, MO, MS, LA, IL in the mid 1800's. The one other migratory tract represented here are those of freed blacks migrating into the Northern States hoping to find a better life. The Yanceys on the 1850 census for NJ & MI are examples of this.
DJY: Please note that the numbers under the 1850 column may be slightly skewed in relation to the other years - in some cases it represents minors by surname YANCEY - living in a household where the head-of-household was of a different surname. The 1850 census was the first census to record all household members - prior to this minors who were being taken care of by people other than their parents as well as older people who were not the head of household were usually not recorded. For this reason the 1850 census numbers onm THIS chart - may be slightly skewed when comparing them to previous years.
