My Yancey Connection
- I am Albert Hunter Spinks, born 1930 in
Memphis, TN; reared in Miss.; currently living in Burlington, NC. My father
was:
- Albert Grady Spinks (1890-1970). He was
born in Kemper Co., Miss. Spent his life in Miss. His mother was:
- Undine Brame (1863-1934). She was born in
Ala. Lived and died in Kemper Co., Miss. Her father was:
- Charles Edward Brame (1823-1892) He was
born in Petersburg, VA. Lived in Alabama and Miss. Died in Miss. His mother
was:
- Betsey Yancey (17??-1823). She was from
Mecklenburg Co., Va. Lived in VA and NC. Died in Petersburg, VA. Her son,
Charles Edward Brame wrote in his family Bible that Betsey Yancey's father was
Sterling Yancey. At one time I did not accept
this Bible documentation because Betsey was not included in the 1815
settlement of Sterling Yancey's estate. Lately however, I have learned that
illegitimate children in North Carolina of the early 1800's were not allowed
to participate in their father's estate without a will, and Sterling had none.
So I now accept that Sterling was Betsey Yancey Brame's father and that there
is a STRONG possibility that she was born out of wedlock. However, I believe
that she was raised, and educated, in the household of Sterling Yancey and
Betsey William Yancey. I therefore have modified my records to show Betsey
Yancey's father as Sterling Y., with her mother unknown. It therefore follows
that Betsey's grandparents were Thornton Yancey and Elizabeth Mitchell; and
her great-grandparents were James Yancey and Ann Thornton.
