In Courthouse

On top of a safe, they had flip top soft boxes with xerox copies
of marriage records in folders by dates. One box was marked
Marriage Bonds 1805-1813. I found folder for 1801 to 1813 in the
box. The records were the best I have seen for this age. The
marriage bonds for each couple was given along with the name of the
father of the bride. Also in most cases was a signed statement from
the father of the bride giving his consent. The records appeared to
go back as far as 1767. [note: somewhere this info must be
cataloged; I may have already seen a book index and have forgotten
about it.]

In the 1793 folder I found record of the marriage of James Yancey
and Nelley Baynes, dated 10 JAN 1793. bond made by James Yancey and
William Glascock. On a separate page was the following:

This is to certify that there is a contract of Marage Between my
Daughter Nelley Bayne and Mr. James Yancey to which I give my free
consent and desire you to grant Lisence and witness my hand this 9th
day of January 1793. Signed Richard Bayne. Test. Wm Glascock,
James Sanders. [Somewhere else I saw that they were married by
Hawkins Landrum.]

In Court Record 8 (1795-98), p 364; Jul court 1797
On the complaint of Nelly Yancy wife of James Yancey, on oath setting
forth that she is danger of her life or some bodily harm to be done
by her said husband, it is therefore ordered that the sheriff take
the said James Yancey in custody, and him safely keep until he shall
find sufficient sureties for his good behavior and keeping the
peace, toward all the commonweaths citizens and more espcially
towards the said Nelly Yancey, for and during the space of twelve
months.

on p. 374 of above; Aug Court 1797
James Yancey being bound in a recognizance with Charles Carter his
security taken before James M. Williams a Justice of the Peace for
this county for the appearance of him the said James Yancey here in
Court this day to answer and ? to and abide by such order as the
court shall make concerning him on the complaint of Nelly his Wife,
and the said parties appearing and for reasons given to the Court by
the said Nelly Yancey it is Ordered that the said James be
discharged from his Recognizance aforesaid.

Court Record Book 9 ( 1798-1801)
p 312; July Court 1800
James Yancey is appointed Guardian of his Daughter Polley Clayton
Yancey and therefore he together with Edmond Turnball is surety,
entered into and acknowledged their bonds .....in the ? of fifteen
hundred dollars for that purpose ????.

Court Record Book 9
p 254 March Court 1800
A case James Simms against some Barksdales and Yanceys (James,
Nelley, his wife, and Polly Clayton Yancey) Suit was associated
with the will of Richard Baynes, father of Nelley. In the records,
some of decendants of Richard Baynes were named. I gathered that
Richard had a daughter that married a Barkesdale. Polly Clayton
Yancey was named as a Granddaughter. Richard's wife Mary was named
as executrix. [Richard BAYNES will was given in this court record]

Will book 1 started 1814 and went 1845. I found 2 wills dated 1814
and then they jumped to 1820. there were inventory records but they
started in 1850's.

In the general index to wills, there were no Yanceys in the early
years. I found Richard Bayne listed, March 17, 1800, court order
book 9/254 which I have outlined above.

I looked for Brills in court records, wills, marriages; I found none
at all.

**************
I found the following interesting--in 1812 one Rawley White brought
a suit against James Yancey and others; Yancey and others did not
show in the court. Then in 1834 the following appeared in the court
records:
Rawley White--James Yancey, etc. It appearing to the court that the
Defts. have departed this life this cause abated.
****************
The last court record I saw for James was in 1816. [NOTE: this
corresponds to the death of one James Yancey of Campbell & son of
Col Thorton Yancey who passed away in 1817 per Lynchburg newspaper.]

I found much info on one William Yancey that extended past James in
time.

I found deed records of sale of property by James and Nelley Yancey
as late as apr 18, 1814 when they sold their home place on Elkhorn
Creek to one John Jenkins. [So James and Nelly stayed together
after she sued him.] [A man in the court house told me that Elkhorn
Creek was out east of Chatham.] This deed listed James and Nelley
as being of Pittsylvania Co., VA.

I saw a deed record of 19 JUL 1813 that Nancy was wife of William
Yancey. [NOTE: Dennis Yancey of Miami has a William Yancey listed
with wife Nancey Sandford and listed as possible son of Andrew Thorton
Yancey.]

19 DEC 1815, Nelley relenquished her dower associated with the 1814
land sale and it is stated that she is of Pittsylvania Co.

In index of 1810 VA census, I found Joel Yancey in Campbell;
Pittsylvania and Mechlinburg I discovered were not listed (lost?).

In a supplement (tax list) I found James Yancey and a Polley C.
Yancey & James Yancey, gardian listed in 1810 Pittsylvania. I also found
William Yancey listed.

James Yancey 1 1 0 [white tithables, slaves over 12, horses]
Polley C. Yancey 0 0 0
William Yancey no data given

the only Yancey I find in the 1820 census of Pittsylvania county is a
