Old Canning Plant, Belgreen, Franklin County, Alabama

Sorry folks, this is the best I could do with the photo that I had.

The old Canning Plant behind the school house at Belgreen, Franklin County, Alabama was a busy place for several years after World War II.  I can remember going there when I was a small girl with my parents to have peas and beans shelled.

I was fascinated by the actions of the machinery and the loud whirring and whooshing sounds taking place inside the canning plant.  People were sealing food in tin cans, preparing food to be preserved or standing or sitting around talking.

Huge machines were available for people to place a bushel of peas or beans in a hopper at the top.  The machine would whir with a loud noisy sound, and then the shelled peas or beans would roll out the bottom.

It was a place for people to meet and talk about the growing season and how productive it was, or to find out the latest family news and gossip.
