I do not know the original source but it contains references which may be of value. There was also a badly weathered newspaper article printed 1933 concerning a Field family reunion (and family history) in Lexington KY. It is legible but too fragile to copy. Mostly it is from Pierce's book, however. There is no doubt Henry Jr. was Elizabeth's father and while some dates are questionable, the names and spouses are ok." Letter Field (These pages were copied by Mrs. C.C. Byers about 1933. Source unknown.) "Ezekiel Henry Field came with his family probably in 1779 with his relative, the famous George Rogers Clark. Not long afterwards he was captured by Indians and held captive for two years. After returning he was killed by Indians on an Indian raid under his uncle. Another letter states that his death occured at the Battle of Blue Licks. George was then military commandant of the State of Virginia, Kentucky territory; the location of Ezekiel's death appears to have been Lower Blue Licks, following the attack on Bryan's Station, 19 August, 1782, three days after the attack on that Station. His family returned to Virginia, but appears to have returned in company of Henry Field, Jr., who had warrants for large land holdings in Kentucky for his war services. The family had previously settled near Harrodsburg, but because of his aylements he never returned, leaving his widowed daughter and two small children, Willis and Ezekiel Henry (Staunton, the second son, died young). Ezekiel was born in Kentucky, May 1782. Henry Field, Jr. was notified of Elizabeth's intention of marriage to young Thomas McClanahan. Not knowing the man, he feared the worst, and the following letter dated November 5, 1785 to his daughter in Lincoln County, Kentucky, territory, in his dainty handwriting, presents his fears for her and her children's welfare. "Dear Children: This comes to inform you that all is well here but my-selfe and I fear that I am far from goode health, and has been so above twelve months, but hope this finds you in good health and happy, wch. will give us pleasure to hear. I must inform you that old Mrs. Field is a stubborn olde woman and we have had angry words concerning Jim, which I expect that she will taike awaye from you, If she has not before this. You may look for it every day. I have tried all I can with her, but can do nothing with her. My last offere was for her to taike Joe for him next year, but have had no answer from her whether she will or not. She has promised to give Willis end Ezekiel Henry a young negro at Pa. I have told her that I looked upon my negroes that came from me to be my owne, and as she was so hard on my child, I should taike the advantage, which I never wanted to - nor Intended it - but as she did taike Jim awaye as she acknowledged, and if you have never married she never would - but for her to give him to Mr. McClanahan who she never saw - she might as well give him to a man in Charlestown. I told her not. I did not want her to give him to anyone, only to let him staye and work and rase the children. I shall say no more on that account, but shall now proceed with those that came from me. In case you should see me no more, I shall give Lucy and her child and all her increase to Willis and Ezekiel Henry to be equally divided between then when Willis marries or comes to age. And halfe the land If it is to be saved, wch. I intended for you and them. Pete and Harriet and one half the land I shall give you and your future heirs, but I do beg and desire that Willis and Ezekiel Henry may be well and kindly used, as my affection is in no ways declined from them, only I think it just that you ought to have a part with them. If I have that good opinion that they never will, so shall saye no more on that Acc'nt at the present. If you see Molly let her know that I wish her well, and Thomas Lillard, and that theye maye depend that I will bring out their things or send them in the spring for it is ordered that I am not to come out asnothing but my health will prevent it. If you can do it without hurting yourselves to kill three or four hogs for me, and salt them up, as we might have the bacon of them I will pay you the cash in the spring or anything else you may want here by advising me of it. The offal I shall be glad - you will let my people have. I am sorry to hear the Indians are so bad as they are. I wish to heare from your country much on that account. I have received one letter from you and no more since I left. I wrote you about three months ago which were to come by George James, who never started as any of us knows, and so my letters were the other day returned to me. Jim Taylor who brings you this also brings my negroes cloaths, which he promised to carry to Joe Delaneys, but for fear he does not and leaves them at Lexington, I must beg of you that you send word of that theymay be got -- (some words missing is that part because of folds in the paper) -- I hope my lands is surveyed as Durrus (Burrus? M. Mc) time is outthe first day of this instant. My lawsuit you will please inform me of how that goes on. And remember the lawers fee is not paid, but I hope that will be made out, some way or soon. If you should see Mr. Charles Smith who agreed to purchase some land fromme, and to pay me this fall wch. he must do or not expect the lands, as I may sell to someone else. As to the news of the country, nothing heard here, but the great scarcety of cash. Some expects paper money but I believe there will be none though we have no word yet of what the Assembly is doing. I want much to hear how much tobacco you made and what chance you have to sell it. Acquaint me with the whole as soon as you can. My compliments to Mr. McClanahan, but I am somewhat offended with him for not letting me know of his coming to your country, wch. I never knew till he was gone. Now I suppose you maye desire to know what my aylment is. The doctor says it is complicated, a mixyure of colic and asthma and nothing but the greatest care can prolong my days any time. I have been under Dr. Buckner ever since getting home. I was taken very bad on the road before I got home, and for four months, day and night without any intermission, I had a violent pain in my stomach. Now, at present it intermits perhaps even for as many days. Dr. Buckner has directed that I must wear flannel next to my skin all over me. This he thinks wili do much. I have worn it about two weeks and think find some advantage, but my fate will be seen this spring. Dated 5 Nov., 1785 Your loving father, Henry Field, L.S. ****** The following letter is of interest in connection with the letter of Henry Field, Jr., letter dated Covington, Kentucky, 17 August 1869, to Mrs. Mary Holloway. "Dear Madam: We hear from the honorable Curtis Field Burnham of Madison County that you can probably give us some information concerning the family of Henry Field, Jr., who died in Culpepper County, Virginia, in 1787. The object of our enquiry is this: Henry Field, Jr., was the owner of a tract of land lying in this (Kenton) County. He devised a thousand acres to each of his six daughters out of this tract. Many years ago these daughters conveyed their interests in these lands to parties who have been in possession and owning it for some thirty years past. Lately, some persons claiming under an adverse and conflicting patent, have gotten possession of some two hundred acres of land, and Mrs. Ruder and Klette who hold the deeds from Henry Field's devisees have brought suit against them to recover the land. Henry Field's daughters were all single at the time of the will, and he devised to their maiden names of Dinah (or Diane), Susie, Nancy, Elizabeth, Mary, and Sarah Field. At the time these daughters conveyed to Ruder & Klette, they used the names of their husbands. Hence it becomes necessary to prove that they were the same persons to whom Henry Field made the devisee. We understand the facts to be as follows: Diana married John Field Susie died unmd. Nancy married Joseph Delaney Elizabeth married (1) Ezekiel Henry Field; (2) Thomas McClanahan. Sarah married. . . . Towles. Mary married (Thomas?) Lillard Mr. Burnham tells us that Mrs. McClanahan was your mother and that you know something about the family history of your mother' sisters from the general repute in her family. If so, we would be glad to get your mother's deposition to use as evidence in the suit. We speak of your mother's deed for her interest in this land is dated January 31, 1837. We suppose that she was a widow at that time, as her husband is not mentioned in the deed. Do you know whether she was or not? Stevenson & Meyers, Lawyers. The foregoing awakens attention not on account of the acres involved but on account of the glimpse it gives into family history of long ago. In her 5 June, 1901 letter, Margaret Massie adds: "I may say in passing that the lads were kindly used and had no trouble with their step-father." Martha G. Thompson's letters of 20 November, 1913 and 21 October, 1921 adds: "When our honored ancestor, Henry Field, Jr., near the close of his life, wrote a simple and homely letter to his children in Kentucky, burdened with questions of slaves, his lands, and his 'aylments,' he had little thought of the curious interests it would have for his descendents. Still less did he dream that his great granddaughter one hundred and twenty-seven years later, would, on the shores of the distant Pacific Ocean, multiply copies of his quaint letter and broadcast them to the sixth and seventh generations.
