FCO 6 INDEX TO FIELD COUSINS ONLINE #6, PARTS 1 & 2 1. The Anderson/Barnes/Field/Kimbrough/Sweeney/Yancey Connection 2. Will of William Kimbrough 3. Field and Associated Family References 4. The Anderson/Field Connection 5. Queries Welcome to Field Cousins Online #6! It is only fitting that we should put out our largest issue at the time we have experienced the most growth. Nine new members joined in the last month alone. In this issue we are taking a bit of a new turn by beginning to explore the various connections between the Fields and other families. Hopefully, this will generate more discussion of related lines for future issues. Upcoming issues will continue to explore the links established here and expand to cover more of the YANCEYs, IRONMONGERs, and others. Sam's great-grandmother Field's manuscript, begun in FCO 5, will be resumed in the January issue. Thanks to those of you who sent material for the newsletter. We would like to encourage everyone to continue to contribute. The latest Field Cousins Online directory (#4) is being sent out. If you don't receive one it is because you haven't submitted an entry. Don't be left out of directory #5! This is our sixth issue. If you have not received previous copies and would like them, e-mail Sam at SHB6@AOL.COM. You'll get your back issues after Thanksgiving! And, lastly, a special note....We are glad to have Richard back as he has been recovering from surgery. We wish him well. ****** KIMBROUGH/FIELD: John KIMBROUGH (ca1640-ca1716) was the original immigrant and ancestor of two lines of Kimbroughs who intermarried with FIELDs. Cousin Sarah Sharpless has a great deal of information on his descendants she is happy to share. A very brief synopsis follows: John Kimbrough married first ca1660 Mary DOUGLAS, and had the following children: John Kimbrough, Jr. (ca1661-1750) m. Elizabeth BRADLEY Marmaduke Kimbrough Jane Kimbrough Mary Kimbrough Robert Kimbrough James Kimbrough He *may* have married second Sarah BRADLEY. Sarah's existence is suspect. It is possible that she may have never existed. These children may have been his by Sarah, or they may have been the sons of John Jr. and Elizabeth Bradley: Thomas KIMBROW/Kimbrough m. Eleanor GRAVES Bradley Kimbrough Sarah Kimbrough The name of his third (or perhaps second) wife was either Margaret BULKLEY (BUCKLEY, BERKELEY) or Mary WINSTON. His children from this marriage: Bulkley Kimbrough Major Kimbrough William Kimbrough His eldest son, John Kimbrough Jr. m. Elizabeth Bradley, a daughter of Thomas Bradley. (See comments above.) Their known children: Rebecka Kimbrough John Kimbrough III (1701-1779) Mary Kimbrough Marmaduke Kimbrough Margaret Kimbrough John Kimbrough III m. ca1728 Elizabeth SPILLER, a daughter of William Spiller. They were the parents of William Kimbrough. William Kimbrough (ca1730-Jun 1765) m. Sarah FIELD (ca1730-1800). Sarah was a daughter of John Field (d. 1789 Louisa Co., VA). John Field's will names his son, Robert Field, and his grandson, Robert Kimbrough, as executors. One of the witnesses was John Kimbrough. A 27 Oct 1747 Louisa Co. deed between Thomas and Eleanor Kimbrow (See above.) and John Field, then of Hanover Co., VA, for 120 acres with plantation, was witnessed by William Kimbrow, among others. (See below.) Wm. Kimbrough's will (dated 19 Feb 1765, recd. 10 Jun 1765 Louisa Co., VA) lists as executors his wife, Sarah; brother-in-law, Robert Field; and son, Robert Kimbrough--as soon as he comes of age. After his death, Sarah married John MOSS on 21 Mar 1767 and had one son, Nelson Moss. William and Sarah (Field) Kimbrough's children: 1. Robert Kimbrough (b. ca1750) m. first Sarah SMITH. He is thought to have m. second Elizabeth YANCEY in 1795, although whether it was this Robert or another one is unproven. She was a daughter of Stephen Yancey. (We will feature Field/Yancey/Kimbrough connections in an upcoming issue of FCO.) Robert was named in John Field's will. 2. Susannah Kimbrough m. Thomas CHILES 3. Capt. Joseph Kimbrough (1760-1845) m. Elizabeth Yancey (23 May 1765-3 Mar 1804), a daughter of Charles and Mary (Crawford) Yancey. 4. John Kimbrough m. Jane (or Jean) SMITH 5. William Kimbrough Jr. m. Salley SMITH 6. Mary Kimbrough m. Joseph LIPSCOMB Cousin Kim SWEENEY descends from #3 Capt. Joseph and Elizabeth (Yancey) Kimbrough through their son Capt. Charles Yancey Kimbrough (1797-1845) and his wife Mrs. Mary (POTTIE) HONEYMAN. Their daughter, Ella Kimbrough (1829-1873) m. Matthew Archer ANDERSON (1827-1867) at Louisa Co. He was a s/o William Peyton and Mary Ann (GOODWIN) Anderson. Their son, George Kimbrough Anderson (1860-1930) m. Susie Lightfoot GOOCH (1860-1938), a daughter of Stapleton Dabney and Mary Evelina (TOLER) Gooch. Their daughter, Mary Gooch Anderson (1886-1971), m. William Elza Sweeney (1877-1963). He was a s/o John Steele and Amanda Alice (MONIN) Sweeney. William and Mary (Anderson) Sweeney were Kim's grandparents. Cousin Sarah SHARPLESS descends from Lt. John Kimbrough (1745, Anson Co., NC - 1786). She says, "I *think* this John Kimbrough was the grandson of Marmaduke--the same Marmaduke who was a brother of John Kimbrough III. Of course, just to make matters confusing, John Kimbrough Sr. had a son named Marmaduke--supposedly drowned at age 16. 'My' Marmaduke was the son of John Kimbrough, Jr.--therefore uncle to the William who married Sarah Field. If I'm figuring correctly, this would make me a 1st cousin 7X removed to William. I come from five generations of Georgians--1st cousin 7X removed is close enough for me." The other Kimbrough/Field connection occurs later, in Texas: Capt. John Field (1774-1833) s/o Robert Field m. Sarah "Sally" WOOD (ca1778-1840) at Albemarle Co., VA. They had 14 children, two of whom were Jesse Field (1810-1863) and Susanna "Susan" Field (1815-1906). (See #1 below.) Jesse m. Martha Ann OGLESBY (1811-1899) in MO and had nine children. They moved to Collin Co., TX ca1858. One of their daughters was Jane Frances Field (b. ca1847). Susan m. Thomas BARNES (1804-1866) in MO and had 10 children. They moved to Collin Co., TX ca1852. A son, Henry C. Barnes m. his first cousin, Jane Frances Field. Their daughter, Nannie Barnes (1865-1945), m. Robert Cooke Kimbrough (1861-1937) at McKinney, Collin Co., TX in 1890. He was born in Athens, TN, a s/o Dr. J.B. Kimbrough, a Baptist minister. Dr. J.B. Kimbrough is thought to have been James Birch Kimbrough (b. 1844), who m. Cornelia (KING) Kimbrough. (See #2 below.) James Birch Kimbrough was a descendant of Bradley Kimbrough. Bradley was a son (or grandson) of John Kimbrough, the immigrant, and a brother of the Thomas Kimbrow/Kimbrough who sold land to John Field. Nannie (Barnes) and Robert Cooke Kimbrough1s children were Mary Kimbrough and Robert Kimbrough, Jr. Mary provided information for the death certificate of her first cousin, Joseph Field DULANEY (20 Oct 1876-27 May 1968), at Collin Co., TX. (Mr. Dulaney was a son of Lucy Ann (Field) and Dr. Joseph E. Dulaney. His mother was a sister of Jennie (Field) Barnes. Robert C. Kimbrough, Jr. m. Leona MORRIS and had two children: Robert C. Kimbrough III, who m. Edna GIBSON and had a son, Kim Bradley Kimbrough; and Virginia Kimbrough, who m. Thomas H. BRISCOE. Notes: 1. Capt. John Field (1774-1833) was born in Albemarle Co., VA, and died in Cooper Co., MO. On 11 Sept 1795 he m. Sarah "Sally" Wood, who was born ca1778 in Albemarle Co. Sally died at Cooper Co., MO, 5 Nov 1840. She was a daughter of Jesse Wood (d. 1824) and Mildred ?. Mildred was the widow of Reuben TERRELL. Jesse was one of five sons of William Wood (d. 1808), who about 1760, bought land in Albemarle on the head waters of Mechum's. His other sons: John, William, Isaac, and Abner. Jesse and Mildred's children were William, Mildred, Sarah, Elmira, Jesse, and Richard. John Field was a captain in the 8th Regiment, 4th Brigade of the Virginia militia in the War of 1812. According to _History of Albemarle County in Virginia_ by Woods, reprinted 1982, his home was east of Batesville, and he operated a well-known public house there for many years. In 1807 he conveyed to Marshall Durrett, James Wood, Charles Massie, Jonathan Barksdale, Oliver Cleveland, Thomas Massie, Henry Emerson, William Wood Sr., and John Wood the land for the old Mount Ed Church, on the south side of the road and on the top of the hill near Whitesides Creek. His son, Dr. John W. Field, was a druggist in Charlottesville, VA, doing business on the square under the name of Field & Goss. In 1831, Capt. John Field sold his place to Isaac White, and all them joined the rest of the family in the West. John and Sarah (Wood) Field's 14 children were (a) James W. (b. ca1802) m. Elizabeth Yancey (b. ca1806) and lived in Rice Co., MO; (b) Robert (b. 18 Dec 1803) on 5 Oct 1829 m. Nancy PIPER and lived in Saline, Co., MO; (c) Dr. John W. (b. ca1808) m. first Miss McCUTCHEON, m. second Ms. ELLIS, m. third Ms. CHAMBERS; (d) Jesse m. Martha Ann Oglesby; (e) William H. m. Mary EWING and lived in Rice Co., MO; (f) Richard (unmarried); (g) Francis Moss aka Franklin Moss (ca1818-1880) m. Sarah A. SUTPHIN; (h) Mildred "Milly" Walker on 27 Mar 1815 m. David Yancey. (They were ancestors of Pres. George Bush) A witness, High Hilhouse, affirmed that both parties were over 21 even though her parents were married only 19 1/2 years previously, also affirmed that David was the son of Jechonias Yancey; (i) Sally Moss (1798 - 7 May 1850) m. William McCORD 21 Dec 1818; (j) Lucy W., on 17 Dec 1816, m. Charles (or James?) ATKINSON; (k) Jeannette (or Janett) m. Milton Wood on 20 Mar 1823 and lived in Saline Co.; (l) Susanna (or Susan Ann) m. Thomas Barnes; (m) Mary (b. ca1820) died about age 20 unmarried; and (n) Celina (b. ca1822) m. Ambrose LAMPTON. 2. Since he, too, was a Baptist minister, it is believed--but unproven--that Dr. J.B. Kimbrough was related to the Kimbroughs mentioned in _The Cates of Lower East Tennessee_ by Manly. According to that book: "The Kimbroughs are a numerous and noted family. They came to Tenn. from North Carolina. Sketches of Duke, Isaac, Bradley, and Robert G. Kimbrough are included in Burnett's Baptist Pioneers." Sources: _Genealogy of Shadrack Barnes of Rowan County, North Carolina_ by Pinckney G. Bagby Richmond, Virginia The surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown in 1781 marked the end of fighting, but the Revolutionary War remained unsettled, officially, throughout 1782. Louisa residents continued to be involved with actions prompted by the war. The County Court of April 1782, for example, renewed public service claims. The court members included Thomas Johnson, Waddy Thomson, Charles Yancey, Henry Garrett, Richard Anderson, and Turner Anderson. Some of the claimants were Mrs. Susanna Arnet, Matthew Anderson, Bartolett Anderson, Michael Anderson, Wingfield Crosby, John Field Senr., and John Moss, each of whom filed claims for pasturing a horse. Claims were filed by John Winston, John Armstrong, George Adams, and Wilson Adams for providing guns, and by John Parker for a musket. William Shelton filed for reimbursement for corn furnished to the troops." ****** These Andersons were primarily from Louisa, Hanover (counties), and Clifton Forge (independent city) in Virginia. In brief, here's Mary Gooch Anderson's lineage: 1. Thomas Anderson (b. 10 Feb 1733) of Hanover County 2. Matthew Anderson (b. 1 Sep 1761) of Louisa County 3. William Peyton Anderson (b. 7 Jan 1802) of Louisa County 4. Matthew Archer Anderson (b. 25 Aug 1827) of Louisa County 5. George Kimbrough Anderson (b. 6 Mar 1860) of Louisa County 6. Matthew Archer Anderson m. Ella Kimbrough 5. George Kimbrough Anderson m. Susie Lightfoot Gooch The only FIELD that shows up in this chart is Sarah Field, daughter of John Field. Sarah m. (1) William Kimbrough and had a son, Joseph Kimbrough (b. 1760) by him. William died in 1765, and Sarah m. John Moss. She died in 1800. Early handwritten transcription of the original bonds and consents. [To consult the original ministers' returns, see reel 78 below; citations in the individual marriage are from the transcription]. This record was a compilation of William Logan Maupin during the early twentieth century, in an attempt to reduce the deterioration of the original loose bonds in the Albemarle Court House. [Marr.Reg., 1806-1868] Statement of Marriage License issued by the Clerk of Albermarle County Court and recorded in the office of said court from the first of January 1806. Archives Branch, Virginia State Library & Archives, photostat copy, 146 folios. Also available as positive reel 62. Note: it seems apparent that the bonds were not entered into the marriage register in a strictly chronological order. Gaps exist in the register, such as the absence of records between 30 April 1817 and 21 June 1817. However, many of the bonds in this period exist in the individual and microfilm reels of bonds and consent papers. During the 1830s, the order is frequently off by a month or more, and also during the 1830s, the clerk recording this data ceased entering the dates of the marriages as reported on the returns. In the single year of 1847, the file is organized in a rough alphabetic fashion throughout the year, indicating that all of the entries were made at some time following the completion of the year. A second document is a minister's bond for Athanasius Thomas to solemnize marriages as a minister of the Methodist Church. Dennis Macon was the guarantor. Date 12 June 1793. This reel also contains a number of minister's return lists for which there is no notation in the written marriage license registers compiled by the court clerk. Approximately fifty previously unrecorded marriage returns were located in this section. In the 1804 portion, there is a document out of place which has no reference to marriage records. It is the note of a disputed property line. The document reads thus: 'Dowels line & Clarkson a disputed line. There are no bonds in this reel for the year 1807; one bond only for 1808; no bonds for 1809-1813; one bond for 1815. Reel includes one consent for year 1790. Includes two marriage bonds and one consent form from 1825. In the records for 1820 is a bail bond dated 28 May 1821 by Ralph Yancey on behalf of Henly Hamner and John Hamner, the two of which were ordered on May 11, 1821 to appear before the June court re: a debt of fifty-one dollars each owing to Joseph Coffman. In the 1821 section of this reel is a further document dated 28 May 1821 regarding this debt. Contains a half dozen printed and handwritten marriage certificates of Albert G. Burton; these were usually given to the married couple and it is unusual for them to be found among bond and consent papers. He was born Ca1720 in Hanover, Co., VA, and died 01 April 1777 while in service. Wife was Mary ?. The family was in Rowan Co., NC, in 1765. Widow applied for land in Guilford Co., NC, and received 440 acres 13 Nov 1779. So, toss my name into the pot. I would like to discover the names of the parents of Nathaniel as well as the maiden name of his widow. On 10 Jan 1839 in Culpeper Co., VA, she married Richard Henry FIELD, who possibly could have been previously married to an Alice LOGAN. Their children were William (b. 1842), Catherine (b. 1844), and Zachariah (b. 1847). I suspect that Richard Henry FIELD was dead by 1850 as Mary and the children living with her uncle, Oswald N. PEMBERTON, and no other mention of her husband has been found. I suspect that Richard Henry FIELD is the son of Daniel FIELD who owned Hollow Square in Culpeper County, and a brother of Lucy A. FIELD, but this is far from verified. I am very interested in finding out what happened to this family as lines ending in a question mark are always painful!
