New Members, Queries, Offers of Assistance ****** Hello Field Cousins! We are back with a new, hopefully useful, issue. We urge you to submit items for the next issue by November 10th or so. The issue should be out on November 15th. We will put out a new directory next week. Please submit your directory information or any changes ASAP, if you haven't already done so, to Sam at SHB6@AOL.COM and/or Majie at majie@sava.gulfnet.com. Some suggestions for submissions are: Dead ends in your Field line and how you came to that spot Military and/or other career achievements of your Fields DAR membership numbers of people claiming desc. from Fields Patterns of migration of different Field branches Tracing your Fields back to England Interesting lines associated with the Fields Accounts of activities that commemorate Field ancestors Research queries ****** We currently number 19 members residing in AK, AL, CA, CO, FL, GA, IN, MD, TX, and VA. One of our members is currently offline and residing in Zimbabwe. Our principal lines of descent and query in VA are from James Field immigrant of 1624: Abraham Feild, the Jamestown immigrant of 1634; Henry Field, the immigrant of Nov. 1635; Abraham Field who m. Mary Ironmonger and appears to be the son of Henry the immigrant; Elizabeth Fields b. 1751-1764 in VA or MD; John Field who died in Louisa County 1789; Sarah Field, d. 1800 in Louisa County m. (1) William Kimbrough (d. 1765, Louisa County), (2) John Moss; Robert Field born Hanover County and d. 1824 Albemarle County; Henry Field, b. 1813-14 in Petersburg; and Sally Fields who married Thomas Coffey in Albemarle County, VA. ****** In FCO #2 we ran the following: "Wives of Robert Field: Genealogists seem to agree that Sarah GREEN was the second wife of Robert FIELD (ca1732-1824). It has been generally accepted that he had three children by his first wife, whose name is still a matter of speculation. However, Edward Sprague Jones, a professional genealogist from New York City, asserts Robert's first wife was Betsy COFFEY. If true, Betsy would have been the mother of at least five of his children: Mary (b. ca1762), Elizabeth (b. ca1764), Sarah (b. ca1766), Jane (b. ca1772), and (Capt.) John (1774-1833)--ancestor of Pres. Bush. His reasons for his believing she was Robert's wife and the mother of those children are based on the following dates: The will of John Coffey of Albemarle Co., VA, was written in Mar 1775 and proved 31 Mar 1777. In it he names his wife, Jean, and a daughter, Betsy FIELD, so a daughter who married a Field was still alive in 1775. He also thinks John Coffey was probably the John Confey [sic] on a list of surveys dated Jun 1746 - June 1747, Albemarle Co. for 150 acres. His source was Magazine of Virginia Genealogy, vol. XXIII, p. 276." Majie has recently found that Betsy Coffey was married to one Thomas Fields--heretofore unknown--which explains the confusion. Per the book _Coffey Genealogy 2_ by A. Cuffes found in the Caldwell County Library in Lenoir NC: John Coffey/Jane Graves 1. James/Elizabeth Cleveland 2. John/(1)Dorcas Carter/(2)Nancy Richardson 3. Edward/Nancy Shenault ***4. Thomas/(1)Eliza Smith/(2)Sally Fields*** 5. Reuben/Sally Scott 6. Benjamin/Polly Hayes 7. William/Elizabeth Ausborne **8. Elizabeth/Thomas Field** 9. Winnefred/Nicholas Moran ****** Bounty Lands Application - from Nat'l Archives microfilm roll 804-971 Elizabeth (Elliott) Fields Marriage Bond: "Know all men by these presents that we, William Fields and Michael Elliott of Russell County and State of Virginia, are held and firmly bound unto Wm. H. Cabell, Esq., Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia and his successors, in the final sum of One Hundred and Fifty Dollars current money, to which payments well and truly to be made, we bond ourselves and each of our heirs, we jointly and severally, firmly by their presents. Sealed with our seals, and dated the 9th day of August 1808." (signed with their X marks) Executed in the presence of Henry Hickermon, Senr. Russell Co., VA: I, James P. Carroll, Clerk of the County Court of the County and State aforesaid, do certify that the above (see preceding) is a true copy of the Marriage License Bond taken on granting license for the marriage of William Fields and Betsey (or Elizabeth) Elliott, the parties to be married named in the condition of said Bond, as the same remains on file in the Clerk's Office of said County Court: That after due examination of the book in which marriages are by law required to be registered in said Office, I do _not_ find the marriage of said parties registered. A return thereof most probably _not_ having been made by the person who solemnized the same. Given under my hand and seal of said Court, at Lebanon, Virginia, the 10th day of May A.D. 1854. James P. Carroll, Clerk. Scott Co., VA: Personally came the two witnesses herein named...residents of the County of Scott in the State aforesaid, who upon oath declare they were personally well acquainted with Elizabeth Fields, who is an applicant for Bounty Land under the Act of Congress of March 3, 1855, who is the widow of said Fields...That the said William Fields and Elizabeth Fields had lived together and been (reputed?) man and wife for a number of years. That they raised a family of children, several of whom are now living. That the said William Fields was at the time of his death...a Revolutionary Soldier and Invalid Pensioner. That the said Elizabeth Fields is still a widow and that we have no interest in her claim, this 15 July 1856. (Signed) John A. Mann and Samuel McClellan Scott Co., VA: On this 22 day of July A.D. 1856, personally appeared before me the undersigned a Justice of the Peace, within and for the County and State aforesaid, duly authorized by law to administer oath, James Bevins, a resident of the County and State aforesaid, and made oath that at the time of the marriage of William Fields and Elizabeth Elliott...he was living with said Fields as a member of the family. That the said William Fields (now deceased) left home for the purpose of marrying Miss Elizabeth Elliott (now Elizabeth Fields). That he, the said Fields, returned home with Elizabeth Fields, said they were married and acknowledged her to be his wife... That they the said William and Elizabeth Fields lived together for upwards of forty years as man and wife. (Signed) X North Carolina to State of Virginia, County of Scott: On the 31st day of May A.D. 1855, personally appeared before me a Judge of the Peace, within and for the County and State aforesaid, Elizabeth Fields, aged eighty-four years, a resident of Scott County in the State of Virginia, who being duly sworn according to law, dictates that she is the widow of William Fields, deceased, who was a Private soldier in a regiment of North Carolina troops in the War of the Revolution. That her said husband served some five or six months, when having been severely wounded he was compelled to leave the service. On account of this wound he was pensioned an invalid by the State of North Carolina, and upon his removal to Virginia in 1821 he was pensioned by the United States, and continued to draw his pension until the day of his death which occurred in Scott County, Virginia, on the 8th of February 1854. For proof of his service in the Revolution she would refer to the enclosed certificate of the comptroller of North Carolina and also to the papers accompanying his application for an invalid pension on file in the Pension Office. Your declarant would further state that she was married to her husband in the month of August 1808, in the County of Russell, State of Virginia, by William Wells, a minister of the Baptist Church, and that her name before her said marriage was Elizabeth Elliott. She furthermore declares that she is now a widow, and that she has never before received bounty lands. For proof of her marriage she would refer to the evidence on file in the Auditor's office at Washington, D.C. upon which she received the arrears of pension due her husband at the time of his death. She makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the bounty land to which she may be entitled under the Act approved on March 3, 1855. R.M. Heath of Washington City, D.C. is hereby authorized as my attorney to prosecute this claim, and to receive any Warrant or Certificate which may be found hereon. (signed with her X mark) ****** The following entries come from Dorman's Culpeper County Virginia; Will Book A 1749-1770 (publ. in 1956): pp. 93-94 (Original Will Book Pages 309-315): The will of William Berkeley names his wife, Elizabeth, his daughters Katharine Connell, Ann Mason, Ann Berkley, Allethea Berkely, Jane Mahoney, Elizabeth Mason, and his sons Benjamin, Samuel, Reuben, and John. Grandchildren mentioned are William FIelds, Jane Burris, Pege Mason, George Mason, Burgess Mason, and Benjamin Mason. As the will is rather lengthy, it will not be reproduced here in it's entirety. If anyone would like a copy, email Sam at SHB6@AOL.COM. The relevant parts of the will for our purposes are as follows: "Dau: Eleanor Fields dec. or at least to her eldest son John Fields sum of 12 shillings and 6 pence. Gr.son: William Fields 19 lbs. 7 shilling, 6 pence in 4 yrs. time after he shall come of age." ****** Cousin Phebe recently copied the final pay for Col. John Fields for his Pt. Pleasant campaign. It was for 63 pounds. She also has further information on descendants of Col. John Fields and the Point Pleasant celebration in Oct. For those interested in copies or more information, contact Phebe. ****** Fanny Field, daughter of James G. Field of Orange, VA, prepared a manuscript on the origins of the Field family. Much of the document consists of plagarized information from the prominent Field sources (York's Pedigrees, Pierce, etc.). Xerox copies are available from Sam. The next several FCO issues will feature abstracts of the Fanny Field document. Original mistakes in grammer and punctuation are left intact. "From York's Pedigrees. Arms granted March 9th, 1663. Field, Horton Shipley and Ardsley County york and Bayside and Flushing, N.Y., confirmed to John Field of East Ardsley Sept. 4, 1558. It is a singular fact that the city of Chester coat of arms is three garbs of wheat like that of the Field family. Sir Herbutus de la Feld resided near that city and it may be that this part of the Chester arms were copied from those he bore. (1) ROGER DEL FIELD. born Sowerby, Eng. about 1240; maried [sic] --. (3) Thomas, born about 1278, married --. (4) Thomas Del Feld, born Sowerby, Eng. about 1278, married --. He was of Sowerby, a juror in 1307. (5) JOHN DEL FELD, born Sowerby, in 1300, married --. He was named in the Wakefield Manor rolls in 1328, 1334, and 1336, when he had land at Sowerby. Called "son of Thomas Del Feld". Res. Sowerby. Eng. issue: (8) [why my great-grandmother skipped #7 here I do not know] Thomas Del Feld, born Sowerby, Eng., 1330, married Annabelle--. He was named in the rolls in 1364 and was elected this year to supervise "agistment and pannage". Constable of Sowerby in 1365 and greave there in 1370. He hired Sowerby mill in 1360 with Thomas de Halilee, and was special juror in 1364. In 1370 he took a piece of land of Thomas Wade, in 'Dedewyferode,' and I think later went to Bradford. The name of Thomas del Feld occurs frequently in the Wakefield rolls between 1346 and 1391, without the addition of senior or junior, so that it is impossible to say which one was referred to in those entires. Both senior and junior are mentioned in 1384, under which date there is but one entry. In 1391 when the name is simply Thomas del Feld [sic]. Probably both senior and junior died about this time. Others of the family mentioned in the life time of the two Thomases who cannot be placed with certainty are Elena del Feld, in 1329 and in 1333, and Margaret, who paid heriot in 1357 on a cottage and land in Sowerby, 'after the death of John Tomson, her uncle.' She is called daughter of Thomas del Feld but of which I am unable to state. He died about 1391, res. Sowerby and Bradford, Eng." ****** For those cousins interested in the Civil War, there is a computer simulation/game by Strategic Simulations Inc. (SSI) called Decisive Battles of the American Civil War. There are currently two versions, each containing six different battles. Why is this relevant to us? In these games, one can "play" General Charles W. Field or Major James G. Field depending on the battle scenario chosen (try Fredericksburg in the MAC version). The game accurately depicts terrain and landmarks which may help in ancestral research. ****** A special welcome to Bob Cromwell. His earliest Field ancestor is: Elizabeth Fields, born probably 1751-1764, in VA or MD. Married between 1766 and 1779 to Joseph Cromwell, in VA or MD. Lived in Jefferson County, KY in 1800. Died between 7 Dec 1807 and 7 Mar 1808 in Jefferson Co. KY. He is researching the following surnames: Cromwell Dorsey Fields Rucker Traherne Woolquist ****** Does anyone have information on the children of Abraham and Mary (Ironmonger) Field? Their children were 1. Abraham (b. ca1661), 2. Daniel (b. Jan 1663), 3. Henry (b. ca1666), 4. John (b. ca1668), 5. Margaret (b. ca1665), and 6. Eleanor ([b. ca1669). I have information on Daniel and Margaret and their descendants, but nothing on the others. Please e-mail majie@sava.gulfnet.com. ****** Majie recently received the book: _The Descendants of Stephen Field of King and Queen County, Virginia_ by Alexander Lloyd Wiatt, 1992. She has offered to do look ups for people interested in this line. ****** Jim Deans is wondering about the following: My line goes through William Coffey/Anna Boone (Daniel's niece) [actually she was a great niece.-MA] with William the second child of Thomas/Sally. I do not have any information regarding the ancestry of Sally. If you have any I would appreciate the information.
