Field, born about the late 1820's. This Dr. Field was a medical doctor who served in the army. He was born in Hornton, Accomack County, VA. I have no knowledge of his ancestry, but was hoping that you might have some data on him from the will which you mentioned in your post to ROOTS. He owned a good portion of Assateague Island which ownership was inherited by his son Samuel B. Field a businessman in Baltimore. Dr. Field was appointed postmaster of Chincoteague Island on 11 June 1889. If your records suggest any link between your ancestors and this Dr. Field, I would appreciate knowing. Happy rooting. Gordon A. Golder 18970 Winding Brook Place, Big Rapids, MI 49307. GGOLDER@MUSIC.FERRIS.EDU. ------ I was researching the Petersburg branch of the Field family for traces of my Henry Field and found that both a George Field and a Thomas Field were listed by the 1830 census with a white male of the right age to have been born in 1814-15, which I know was the case for Harry from the 1850 census. In researching in the Petersburg histories found in the Fairfax libraries, I find that according to one history, Thomas Field married Susan Scott in 1799 (See Dinwiddie County--Writers Project, p.83), Winfield Scott's sister, not Ann Mason Scott as Pierce states on p. 1112. Ann Mason died, according to this history, in 1803 leaving two sons and several daughters. (Note I have read several of the 34 biographies of Scott and none so far mention the marriage to Thomas Field cited by Pierce. Do you have any information about this? Thomas was a very interesting figure. He was editor of the Petersburg Intellegencier and very active in politics. He killed a man in Petersburg Market, one John Crom, but was found innocent by reason of self-defense. Also, the last person convicted under the Alien and Sedition Acts in the United States was living in his house when convicted (June 1800) and was sentenced to prison by Judge Solomon P. Chase, later of the Dred Scott decision. The last issue of the Intellegencier was March 6, 1827, but it was apparently succeeded by "The Old Dominion." Also do you have any information on George Field of Petersburg as he also has a white male of the appropriate age in his household according to both the 1820 and 1830 censuses? (Thomas, strangely enough, does not appear in the1820 census.) I can find no other references to George except that he was Thomas's brother, according to Pierce. I am really interested in Thomas because Henry's first-born son was named Thomas, and his last born son was named Scott, Thomas's wife's maiden name. Harry Robert Field cdmfed@allware.com
