GRAY and ALLDAY Families ****** Having put out the monthly electronic newsletter for nearly three years, we have decided that this will be the final FCO newsletter. We are in no way abandoning the project. Instead we are switching formats. From now on, we will be continuously posting material to the FIELD Cousins Online Website. We will also continue to send out the Directory twice a year and the Directory Update monthly. In making the switch, it is our hope to be able to more quickly provide the mountains of data that we have collected over the years. If you have items (queries, lines of descent, photos, documents, articles, etc.) you would like posted to the page, please forward them to Sam or Majie . The Website is located at . ****** In FCO 28 we discussed the family of Judge Robert FIELD. Judge FIELD was a son of Capt. John FIELD and his wife Sarah WOOD. The following information pertains to Judge FIELD's fourth child, John Walker FIELD. (Judge FIELD and his first wife, Nancy PIPER, had 7 children, only their 4 sons are listed on the CD from which this information was obtained.) Cousin Kim Sweeney provided the following information: >From _The Dunlap-Kimbrough-Gilbert Book_ by Ada Rasco Crumpton "Benjamin Thomas Kimbrough, the progenitor or ancestor of this family, was born in Ireland in 1808. He was a real Irishman, which explains the fiery attitude of the Kimbrough family to fight for a just cause. "He gave the following information to his granddaughter, Mrs. Neil Arnold (Frances Isabella Kimbrough): 'Our grandfather, Benjamin Thomas Kimbrough, and his brother, William Kimbrough, came from Ireland. He said that they were the only ones by that name who came over and that anyone who spelled their name KIMBROUGH was related to us. They settled first in one of the Carolinas, then they went to Georgia, and finally bought land near Nixburg in Coosa County, Alabama....'" ------ _Kimbrough, Dumas, and Related Southern Families_ by Margaret Kimbrough Mulkey Contents: Part I John Kimbrough, Colonist and some Southern descendants; A Kimbrough-Dumas Line Marmaduke Kimbrough Godbold, Alston, Allston, Hinton Part II Dr. Jeremiah Jerome Dumas and some Southern descendants; Benjamin Dumas-Kimbrough Line DeVan, DeVane, Watkins, Lucy, Ratcliff, Ratcliffe, Henson, Hinson, De Jarnette "From Rear Admiral Joseph W. Kimbrough: 'My immigrant ancestor, John Kember, arrived in Port Tobacco, Maryland, in 1659 and moved to New Kent County, Virginia, at the time of Bacon's Rebellion. I have a copy of the deed...The family name goes back prior to the 13th century in England where it seems to have appeared first in South Cornwall. As a tribal name it is considerably older. My branch seems to have come from Dover, Gloucestershire, where it appears about 1500. "....A Cecil County, Maryland Court Proceeding notes that John Kimbrough was about 29 or 30 years old in 1672..." ****** Cousin Gale Fuller has written the following articles on the GRAY and ALLDAY families. The GRAY to FIELD connection is as follows: Daniel FIELD was born in Westmoreland Co., VA, in 1663, the son of Abraham FIELD. Daniel died in Westmoreland in May 1720. He married, as his second wife, Mary (ALLDAY) WHEELER PRICE. Mary was born in Westmoreland Co. ca1665. She died before 17 Apr 1720. She was the daughter of Henry ALLDAY and Grace (GRAY) ALLDAY. Grace was a daughter of Francis GRAY. GRAY Francis Gray is first mentioned in 1658, Westmoreland Deed books in a deed of gift to his son-on-law, William Rush. [No name is given for the daughter.] In 1659 he makes a second deed of gift, this one to Robert Wyard, his wife Elinor and their 5 children. [This would mean Elinor was at least 30 years old making her father, Francis, in his 50s.] In 1660/1 Gray was appointed attorney of John Lancelott, his son-in-law who called Gray "my loveling father-in-law." Lancelott's wife was named Mary. A deed of gift of "one grizled sow with white feete" was made in 1661/2 to Grace Alldy. Alice Gray, wife of Francis Gray of Northumberland Co. is first mentioned when she relinquishes her dower's rights when Gray sold 250 acres of a patent of 1,000 acres granted him 16 July 1654. In April 1664, Francis Gray was given 200 acres for transporting 4 men, one of whom was Evin Price. Nothing else appears in material available to me until 1674 when Francis Gray and Thomas Hills were accused of killing a "hogg." A second entry that year refers to Francis Gray "Seignr." Robert Streete testified that he heard Fra: Gray Seignr, Tho: Boyce and Jno: Hilliard say that the land called Round Hill belonged to them. In 1690 a lawsuit between Thomas Sharp and Tho: Kitchen, who married the executrix of Fra: Gray. Kitchen was to return an inventory of Gray's estate. Later that year judgment is granted Tho: Sharp as "marrieing" Eliza, one of the daughters of Francis Gray, dec'd, against Tho: Kitchen as "marrieing" with Sarah, the relict and executrix, for one fourth part of the estate. This is the last of the Gray name in Westmoreland Co., VA. My opinion is as follows: Francis Gray came to VA in 1654 and received 1,000 acres of land as a patent in Northumberland Co. Most likely part of this patent was in what a few years later became Westmoreland Co. Francis' wife was named Alice and they had several daughters and probably one son, Francis Gray [Jr. or II]. One daughter was married to Wm. Rush. A second daughter, Elinor, was married to Robert Wyard. Daughter Mary was the wife of John Lancelott, and Grace Allday, who received the grizled sow, most likely was his daughter also. With four daughters married by 1658-62 and one having five children in 1659, Francis Gray was probably born ca1610-1620 and immigrated as a young man with his family. >From 1664-1674, there is no mention of any Francis Gray in Westmoreland Co. Northumberland Co. records have not been checked. But the Francis Gray of 1674 is probably the son of the earlier Francis Gray. If son Francis Gray had four sisters, all grown and married by 1662, then he would be about the age to have a daughter himself named Eliza, the wife of Thos: Sharp in 1690. In the lawsuit for Eliza's child's portion of Gray's estate, this Francis Gray's wife was Sara, and she remarried following his death. In Nathaniel Gray's will it states his father is Francis Gray. There is a marriage of a Nathaniel Gray to Elizabeth Fitzhugh 12 Aug 1734 in St. Paul's Parish. I am not sure if this is the St. Paul's in King George Co. or Hanover Co. as both had St. Paul's Parish. This is possibly the son of Nathaniel Gray, son of Francis Gray, or it could be that she died and Nathaniel, who died in 1743, married again to Mary? Checking Northumberland wills and deeds could shed additional light on this line. ------ ALLDAY The information concerning Henry Allday [Alldy or Alday] is very limited. Like Francis Gray, his father-in-law, Henry is often mentioned in lawsuits and signed documents as a witness The earliest mention of Henry Alldy is in the will of Edward Prescott, a sea captain. Prescott states that Henry Alldy is his "kinsman," and Prescott appointed Alldy along with 2 "loving" friends as his executors in Maryland and Westmoreland Co. VA and "to possess all the rest of my estate." This was in 1661. The will of Henry Allday was written 27 April 1670, stating he was sick. He named his heir as his daughter, Mary Allday, who inherits all of his lands with his beloved wife, Grace, getting her thirds during her natural lifetime. Grace was the executrix. The will was proved 27 July 1670, so Henry died between April and July of 1670. Inventory of Henry Allday's estate was given 2 Aug 1670 and settled by Grace Allday, relict and administratrix, on 9 Nov 1670. It is proved here that Mary was their only child. As to whether she was married at the time of her father's death is undetermined by her father's will as no husband is mentioned. It is most unlikely. With Grace as daughter of Francis Gray receiving a deed of gift in 1661/2, she was most likely a bride or newly married at that time. Thus she was married only about 10 years before her husband died.
