I really appreciate all your work. Tom Smith ****** Cousin Gale Fuller says: Mary Spence very likely could have been a "Black Widow" or at the least she was unlucky at love! Mary married at least 4 times and possibly more and appears to have had no children of her own. I have not determined who her father was but very likely Patrick Spence, Sr. Mary is of no direct lineage to our line but as a "colorful" stepmother this was prepared. John Bell, Mary's first husband, is seen as a witness in 1660. He purchased land in 1665 in Westmoreland County and wrote his will on 5 Feb 1669/70 when he was ill. Mary, his wife, was named the executrix and his entire estate was left to her except one cow was willed to a "beloved friend, Thomas Weeb." Less than 3 months from the writing of his will, John Bell was dead and his widow, Mary, gave livestock to her "cozens." These could be her nieces and nephews rather than what today is known as a cousin. This deed of gift was written 29 April 1670, and Abraham Field was a witness. Three months later, 27 July 1670, when the deed was acknowledged, it was by Abraham Field who has "intermarried" with Mary Bell. This puts their marriage between 29 April and 27 July 1670. Four years later, Abraham Field dies. Abraham wrote his will on 26 Aug 1674 and died in Aug of that year. How blessed we are that he names his children, 4 sons and 2 daughters, and gives the ages of 3 of the sons. From these ages in his will, we know that these three sons, Abraham aged 13 1/2, Daniel aged 11 1/2, and Henry aged 8, were children by an earlier marriage. It is possible one or two of the children were of his marriage to Mary, but nothing states this. It is also possible the children without ages could be older but this is unlikely. Mary and Abraham were married for 4 years before his death. And before the estate accounting was given for Abraham Field, Mary had married again. On 25 Feb. 1674/5, Corderoy Ironmonger, planter, was selling land to Patrick Spence and John Foxhall. This land was the estate Mary inherited from her first husband. I find it unlikely she had children by Abraham Field or she would have wanted this land to go to those children. The estate of "Abram" Field is mentioned in this transaction and his children as living with Ironmonger. Ironmonger was being bound to pay the same as marrying the relict of Field. This statement is not clear to me. On the next page of the deed book, Abram Field's estate account is given. Please note that Patrick Spence, brother or father of Mary, made the purchase of land she inherited from her first husband. On 5 June 1675, Corderoy Ironmonger was dead. This is less than a year after Abraham Field's death! Mary Ironmonger was again administratrix, and at this time disbursements were made to the "orphants" of Abram Field. Poor Field children! They had lost their mother, their father, and now a stepfather. Shortly after Mary married Corderoy Ironmonger, 23 Feb. 1675/6, one of the sons of Abram was bound to David Whitliffe. It is unknown which one, for the place where the name would be written is blank in the document. Then, in June of 1677, Abraham Field, (Jr.) was apprenticed to David Whitliffe; and in November 1677, son Henry Field was apprenticed to Geo: Hales. By this date 26 Nov 1677, Mary Spence Bell Field Ironmonger had married yet again. For now, Abram Field's estate was in the hands of Alex: Gallant who had married the relict of Field. At this point, no record abstracts have been made from documents between 1677 and 1690. There is possibly a great deal more to learn of the children of Abraham Field by his first wife and their stepmother, Mary. ****** Cousin Gale Fuller says: Is Mary Allday Wheeler Price, the mother of the children of Daniel Field? Follow these by dates: March 1684. Daniel and Abraham II divided the land left to them by their father. 25 Nov 1691. Danll: Field sold land to Tobias Butler. Field's wife, Mary, ack. Release of her dower's right. 25 Mar 1692. Edward Wheeler's will proved and probate granted Evan Price the right of his wife, Mary, relict of the dec'd. May 1696. Evin Price is in a lawsuit. It states, Evin Price as marrieing the executrix of Edwd: Wheeler vs. Robert Jones. Dismist. 1697. There is a lawsuit with John Wheeler and Mary Wheeler about an "assault on tobacco." This could be husband and wife or brother and sister. 1698. Evan Price was dec'd by this time. 1702. Edwd: Wheeler's orphans [note plural] are mentioned in identifying land next to Edwd: Wheeler's in possession of Danll. Field. So Danll: Field had married Mary by this time. Nov 1702. John Jones summoned Daniel Field to be sure Daniel provided for Wheeler's orphans, children of his wife Mary by her first husband Edwd: Wheeler. Dec 1702. Daniel Field who hath intermarried with Mary, relict of Evan Price. 1704. John and William Wheeler of St. Peter's and St. Paul's Parish paid Quit Rents. [St. Peter's is in New Kent Co. and St. Paul's is in both Hanover and King George.] Thomas Wheeler paid Quit Rents in Essex Co. 1704. Anthony Wheeler is son of William Wheeler. 1705. John Wheeler is kin to Thomas Wheeler. 1705. Thomas Wheeler orphan of William Wheeler. 1706. John Wheeler in deposition says he is about 66 years old. 1708. John Wheeler in a deposition says he is about 69 years old. It appears to me that Daniel Field was of age about 1684 as he took possession of his inheritance from his father. From 1684 until 1691, he most likely married someone named Mary. Did they have children? If so which of Daniel's children were by this first wife? Mary could not have married Daniel until 1697. This is 6 years after a Mary Field gave up her dower's rights in a land sale by Daniel to Tobias Butler. Mary Allday Wheeler most likely had more than the one son, John. However the ages of these men make it difficult to sort out. There have to be two John Wheelers. Most likely John and Edward were brothers. So would John Wheeler Jr. have a brother as the documents lead you to believe? Then who is William Wheeler? Another brother of Edward's or Edward's son and the brother of John Jr? ****** Cousin Gale Fuller compiled the following timeline for FIELDs and related families in Westmoreland Co., VA 1658-1685. 1658 Francis Gray deed Wm. Fields <104071.2666@compuserve.com> says, In the latest FCO [FCO 32] you listed some family info, and in one submitted by Donald Barber, Jr. in 1986 [to Yates Publishing -MMLA], is listed my 4th great grandfather, John Fields. It was as follows: John FIELDS (1769 NC - 1852 Perry Co, KY) md. Elza Bailey (b 1773 NC) d. Perry Co. KY. The accepted date for his birth is 1763. This is shared by me and cousin Bill Fields of Seymour, TN. Also he did not marry Eliza Bailey! Her name was Polly, last name unknown. As per Rev. War Appl. papers. Furthermore it is most unlikley that both he and his son Stephen married women (or the same women) by the name Eliza Bailey. Cousin Bill said this was started by Sadie Stidham who by Bill's proof admitted to the Polly part but still insists on her being a Bailey. She has yet to offer any proof of her claim that he was born in Bakersville, NC. Also listed in the FCO was a daughter Rachael. She wasn't the only child, there was a total of eight children. A son Esau was my 3rd g-gf and a daughter, Lucy was my 3rd g-gm. Esau's son Hiram and Lucy's daughter, Polly married, they were first cousins. Mary Ann FIELDS married George Joseph SWARTZ 12/25/1882 in Blytheville, Arkansas where part of the FIELDS family had migrated to according to Fields cousins and family history. Mary Ann FIELDS and George J. SWARTZ (b. KS) had two children: Henry Houston SWARTZ b. 1884 AR Rose Blanche SWARTZ b. 8/24/1888*** AR Mary Ann FIELDS remarried after the untimely death of her first husband to Benjamin MIMS...no children from this union. Rose Blanche SWARTZ married George E. COLLINS in 1905 in Blytheville, Arkansas. They migrated to Pemiscot County, Missouri and remained there until 1915 when they returned to Arkansas, this time to Osceola, Miss. Co. Mary Ann stated that the family was related to the BROWNS (Phillip Freeman BROWN) and EDEINGTONs (Fidelia Edington b. Louisiana) of Arkansas and Indiana. I have in my possession a letter from a Tom BROWN verifying this, Tom lived in Gary, Indiana at the time the letter was written...1952, but the letter was written as he was visiting relatives (or perhaps vice versa...the letter is vague in that respect) in Flint, Michigan in December of that year. I have previously been in touch with a descendant of James FIELDS, son of Samuel, grandson of Philip FIELDS, and he is about at the same point with our family history and verified that we do have BROWN relatives in Gary, Indiana. I am interested in talking with anyone who might have a clue where Georgia Philip FIELDS came from, if his family possibly moved to Kentucky before landing in northwestern Tennessee (his wife was born Kentucky), or if he connects straight to a Georgia family? While in Obion County, Tennessee the families associated in 1850 with the CUNNINGHAM family...Theodore b. IRL, Mary b. IRL, Hampden b. Canada, Thomas b. Canada and Jeremiah b. Wisconsin; and the HOPKINS family....Josiah b. KY, and Jane b. TN. Both of those families had FIELDs children living in their household "next" to Philip and family.
