We have grown so much in the last year that we could really use some help! Our most immediate need is for a dedicated cousin to handle producing and maintaining the directory of FIELD researchers. We could also use help with our web page and the newsletter. If you can help us out, please contact Majie Alley at majiea@earthlink.net or Sam Brown at SHB6@aol.com! ****** This month we conclude our look at the known FIELD(S) lines that migrated from Virginia to Missouri. FAMILY V FCO member Pat King joined the group after this article began running and has provided the following information. Pat descends from Robert FIELD and his first wife's daughter, Elizabeth FIELD (b. 1764), who md. John MILLS on 6 Jan 1782 in Albemarle Co., VA. John MILLS owned land, which is now known as Brooksville, in Albemarle. In 1795 he sold the land to James HAYS and probably left the county, apparently for KY. We have thus far been unable to find the names of their children, although we think the John MILLS who md. Mary DAVIS was a son. Mary was a daughter of John and Jane (MILLS) DAVIS of NC and TN. They were the parents of a Sarah MILLS b. 1817. >From Goodspeed's History of Barry Co., MO, 1888: p. 21: Marriage - 29 Nov 1838 John MILLS and Jane PENNINGTON by J. T. V. DEEDS, JP. p. 69: May 1836 - John MILLS appointed administrator of the estate of Gibson JENKINS. p. 140: Washburn business in 1871 was represented by, among others, William F. TOWNSEND and D. A. MILLS, grocers. p. 140: In 1870 W. B. ADCOCK was appointed Postmaster, but was succeeded in August by D. A. MILLS; J. S. HALE succeeded. We believe the following to be the grandchildren of John MILLS and Elizabeth FIELD and possibly the children of John and Mary (DAVIS) MILLS: A. Sarah B. MILLS (3 Jul 1817 KY - 1850/1857) is buried at Curtis Cemetery, on a family farm near Carthage, Jasper Co., MO. She was the first wife of John William PRIGMORE (27 Apr 1815 - 3 Aug 1894). They md. ca1837 in Jasper Co., MO. Their children (all were born in Newton Co., MO): 1. Samuel T. PRIGMORE. 2. Elizabeth PRIGMORE (b. 1838). 3. Daniel F. PRIGMORE (b. 7 May 1840). 4. Amelia Mahala "Milly" PRIGMORE (b. 25 Jul 1842). B. Elizabeth "Betty" MILLS (13 Dec 1818 - aft 1870 Lawrence Co., MO) md. Jacob LEE (9 Feb 1815 TN - 7 May 1876 Lawrence Co., MO). Also from Goodspeed's History of Barry Co., MO, 1888, p. 20: 11 Jan 1838 Jacob LEE and Elizabeth MILLS by J. M. FULLERTON, JP. Their children: 1. Sarah Ann LEE (b. 1840) md. Samuel SMITH on 30 Sep 1855. 2. John LEE (b. 1846). 3. Mary Ann LEE (16 Oct 1853 - 24 Apr 1875) is buried at Lee Cemetery, Lawrence Co., MO. She md. Alonzo C. STOCKSTILL on 26 Mar 1869. C. NANCY MILLS (1819 IN - bef 1888 Tom Springs, AR) md. 1st, on 27 Jan 1867, Robert E. LEE (25 Feb 1813 VA/TN - 22 Jan 1849 Lawrence Co., MO). Buried at Lee Cemetery in Lawrence Co. Robert was the brother of Jacob LEE, who md. Elizabeth MILLS. Their children: 1. Daniel Fields LEE (18 May 1842 Lawrence Co., MO - 4 Mar 1863 Verona, Lawrence Co., MO) was a Civil War veteran. 2. Sarah Jane LEE (1843 - aft 1850). 3. Rebecca Frances LEE (b. abt 1846). After Robert E. LEE's death, Nancy MILLS married 2nd William W. OSBORN. They had the following children: 1. John W. OSBORN. 2. Albert OSBORN. 3. James OSBORN. 4. Andrew OSBORN. It is assumed William W. OSBORN died, because Nancy MILLS married 3rd John William PRIGMORE (husband of her dead sister, Sarah) on 3 Dec 1857. They had the following children: 1. Martha A. PRIGMORE (b. Feb 1859). 2. George Winfred PRIGMORE (b. 5 Dec 1859). 3. Nancy Rosella PRIGMORE (b. Jul 1868). --------------- We now turn our attention to the descendants of Nathaniel (1727 - 1777 Rockingham Co., NC) and Mary (?) FIELDS. They were in Hanover Co., VA at the same time as John FIELD (d. 1789 Louisa Co., VA), whose descendants have been discussed so far in this article. Nathaniel and Mary's children: 1) Ansel(na) FIELDS (5 Jan 1749 Hanover Co., VA - 1 Oct 1834 Shelby Co., IN) md. Martha "Patty" DODD in 1781 at Rockingham Co., NC; 2) John FIELDS (2 Apr 1752 Hanover Co., VA - 1 Sep 1835 Rockingham Co., NC) md. Mary GIBSON in 1776 and had eight children. [Two of his sons were named Jeremiah and Nathaniel, and may be included among the unidentified FIELD(S) at the end of this article. -MMLA]; 3) Agnes FIELDS md. Turbyfield BARNES in 1774 in Guilford Co., NC and had four children; 4) William FIELDS (b. 1750 Hanover Co., VA) md. Ann ?; 5) Elijah/Obadiah FIELDS (ca1755 Hanover Co., VA - 1802) md. Catherine BURTON [New FCO member W.H. McAdams descends from Obadiah]; 6) Susanna FIELDS (15 Dec 1765 Rowan Co., NC - 20 Sep 1791) md. William LESTER in 1780; 7) Robert "Nelson" Pleasant FIELDS--discussed below. [Cousin Phil Hirl descends from Nelson FIELDS through his son Ambrose.] Nelson's son Ambrose migrated to MO before ultimately settling in OR [For more information on Nathaniel and Ambrose, see FCO 12 and 17]; and 8) Allen FIELDS (b. ca1770), whose presumed son, William Charles FIELDS (b. 10 Jan 1819) went to MO [Cousin Alinda Miller descends from William Charles.] FAMILY VI Robert Pleasant "Nelson" FIELDS (26 Feb 1768 Rowan or Orange Co., NC - 11 Feb 1839 Williamson Co., TN) md. Mary DODD in 1790. Nelson was a son of Nathaniel and Mary (?) FIELDS. Phil Hirl says, "Nelson went to TN and some of his children went to W. TN. There are still several FIELDS in TN and KY. Ambrose, I believe, was the only the FIELDS to get clear to Oregon. At least of his siblings. "There are two other FIELDS families who came to OR, and they may well be tied to mine. One was from Bourbon Co., KY, then Ray Co., MO. Ebenezer FIELDS was earliest known in this group: Bourbon Co., KY; Ray Co., MO; Linn Co., OR. I have family group sheets for them. [See the section on unidentified FIELD(S) for their group sheets.] The others were from Grayson Co., VA. Brothers Hugh and William FIELDS came to OR with uncle Hugh CURRIN. Hugh FIELDS was born 1828 Grayson Co., VA. His parents were Joseph FIELDS (d. 1833 when thrown from a horse) and Ann CURRIN (d.1832). In 1831 they went to Henry Co., MO. Joseph was sheriff in Henry Co. They went back to VA to live with grandparents by 1841, back in MO with CURRIN family 1845 to OR. (information from _Currin History_) [Joseph might be included among the unidentified FIELD(S) below. -MMLA] "There was another FIELDS family in 1850 Andrews Co., MO, next to my Mary Ann (FIELDS) BAILEY. This was William and Elizabeth FIELDS, 47 and 44 with eight young FIELDS, 17-3, all born in MO, and William and Pernesa LOGSTON. She may have been a daughter. I still haven't figured out who they are. Can't find that they came to OR, so it may be a coincidence they were neighbors, but I doubt it. "Ambrose FIELDS and his brother William were both md. in Mason Co., KY ca1820, but they both soon were in western TN/KY--Obion Co., for example. It is not clear why they would have been in Mason Co., KY when both were born in NC. Maybe visitng Joseph FIELDS? [He might have been the unidentified Joseph (d. 1844 MO) who appears below. -MMLA] "The book, _History of Henry Co., Missouri_, mentions a possible son Joseph for Obadiah FIELDS. The book is unclear how Obadiah ties to Nathaniel and Mary FIELDS." [William McAdams says he has proven that Obadiah was the son called "Elijah" in Mary's land grant papers. -MMLA] "Ambrose and his wife Ann NOWER had 10 children. All but one went to MO between1842-45. Then on to Oregon by 1852. My Mary Ann was md. to Thomas BAILEY by then. They were in Andrew Co., MO 1850. Her siblings and parents were there or the next county." The children of Robert "Nelson" Pleasant FIELDS and Mary DODD: A. Elizabeth FIELDS (1791-1859). B. Ambrose FIELDS (2 Feb 1792 Rockingham Co., NC - 17 Mar 1872 Clackamas Co., OR) md. Ann NOWER (20 Feb 1802 KY - 24 May 1883 Clackamas Co., OR) on 18 Dec 1816 in Mason Co., KY. Their 10 children: 1. Nelson FIELDS (1821 - 1856 OR), a son of Ambrose FIELDS, in 1843 at Weakley Co., KY and had six children, supra. 2. Mary Ann FIELDS md. John FIELDS in 1843 at Weakley Co., KY. He was a son of Nelson FIELDS, Jr. (b. 1798) and Mary RANKIN. D. Allen FIELDS (1796 Rockingham Co., NC - 1847 Fulton Co., KY) md. Delilah BEASLEY at Giles Co., TN. E. Nelson FIELDS, Jr. (b. 1798) md. Mary FIELDS (b. 1807 Rockingham Co., NC) md. Noah NORMAN (b. 1806 Rockingham Co., NC) in 1834. J. Maacha FIELDS (b. 1809) md. James SIMMONS. FAMILY VII Cousin Alinda Miller says about Allen FIELDS (b. ca1770)--a son of Nathaniel and Mary (?) FIELDS, "The earliest I can place him is in Rockingham Co., NC in 1792 when he was listed as Grantor (along with his brother Nelson) to 160 acres on Mountain Run Creek. "I have him on the 1810 Census Rockingham Co., NC with eight children and a wife. 1820 Rockingham Co., NC: 7 children, 1 wife. 1830 Williamson Co., TN: 5 children, 1 wife. 1840 Williamson Co., TN: 2 children, no wife. "The 1820, 1830, 1840 census shows a male child the age William Charles would have been. In 1840 Allen was listed as between the ages of 70-80, which would put his birth year about 1760/70. "I believe he died in Williamson Co. but have been unable to prove it. I have found no records left by him. I don't know the names of any of his children or his wife's name. "The only thing I have found was an Allen Fields was involved in a court case involving a child. The girl's mother contended that Allen Fields was the father of her daughter, and apparently she was trying to get Allen to take the girl as she was ordered by the court to care for the child until she was eight years old. Allen was also ordered to pay support, but the girl's mother was ordered to pay also to ensure she took care of the child until age eight. What became of her after that is anyone's guess. Anyway, Allen paid with Nelson as the go between for Allen. This was in the 1818-22 Minute Book 6 pg. 439 1822 (court date was 18 Mar 1821)." We think it is possible that William Charles FIELDS was a son of Allen's, so we are placing him here. If anyone has proof of William Charles' parents, please email either Alinda Miller or Majie Alley. A. William Charles FIELDS (10 Jan 1819 NC - 23 Jun 1908 Mt. That listing immediately followed one on Phil Hirl's ancestor, Ambrose FIELDS, supra. *** QUESTION: John FIELDS (b. 3 Apr 1752 Hanover Co., VA)--son of Nathaniel and Mary (?) FIELDS--and his wife, Mary GIBSON (24 Dec 1754 - 14 Oct 1844), had sons named Jeremiah (b. 10 Feb 1787), who md. Jane SCALES, and Nathaniel (b. 5 May 1789). Does anyone know where these men lived? Could they be the Jeremiah and Nathan named above? Please email Majie Alley, if you know the answer to either of these questions. If they are the same men, it might provide another clue to a possible link between the lines of Nathaniel FIELDS (1727-1777) and John FIELD (d. 1789), since their descendants would have gone to the same county in MO. ---------------- Cousin Tom Smith has found the following unidentified Missouri FIELD(S) in the course of his research. His occupation has consisted principally of stock-trading and farming, although some years ago he was engaged, for a short time, in general merchandising, near Louisville, Kentucky. In 1847 he was married to Miss Artridge Fields, of Hardin County, Kentucky, who died in the winter of 1853, leaving two children, both of whom have since died. In 1851 Mr. Withers went to Knox County, Missouri, where he engaged in stock-trading and farming. He was married here, for the second time, to Miss Annie Hawkins, a native of that county, by whom he had six children, three boys and three girls, all living. In the fall of 1866 Mr. Withers came to this county, locating upon a farm, and by industry and good management has succeeded in making for himself and family a pleasant and comfortable home." ---------- The group sheets on this family were submitted to Yates Publishing in 1993 by Claudia Carter. Ruddy MORGAN on 10 Dec 1846 at Richmond, Ray Co., MO. ------ Helen Graves says, I may have two FIELDS lines (or perhaps just one): Ebenezer FIELDS (ca1770-1847) married Sarah Roxannah BURDEN (ca1783-1850), daughter of James BURDEN, on 20 May 1799 in Bourbon Co., KY. This area became Nicholas Co., KY. I descend from their daughter Margaret Sarah (Peggy) FIELDS born ca 1810 in Nicholas Co., KY, who married Peter RUSOW (Rousseau) on 22 April 1830 in Ray Co., MO. Peter and Peggy RUSOW had three sons: James (1831), Ebenezer (1833), and Joseph (1836). I also descend from a Mary Ann FIELDS who was born in 1836 in Ray Co., MO. I have not been able to document who her parents were. She may be the daughter of a John FIELDS who lived in Ray Co., MO, at that time. I am still sorting out the many different FIELDS families who lived in Ray Co. between 1818-1850. Mary Ann FIELDS (1836-1909) married James RUSOW, the eldest son of Peter RUSOW and Peggy FIELDS, in 1851 in Ray Co., MO. James RUSOW died in 1891 (place unknown) and his widow Mary Ann FIELDS RUSOW died in Council, Adams Co., Idaho in 1909. Mary Ann FIELDS and James RUSOW could have been second cousins or related in some other way, or perhaps not related at all. I have not yet been able to determine if or how Ebenezer FIELDS was related to the other FIELDS men who came to Ray Co., MO, between 1818 and 1836. A Stephen and Joseph FIELD from TN settled in Ray Co., MO, by 1815. Ebenezer arrived with his family between 1817-1818 as his son Stephen was born in MO in March 1818. By 1820, there were at least 6 FIELDS men on the first tax rolls and census. A John FIELDS from KY settled there in 1825. I have no idea if he is related to the others or not. I sure can use some help sorting out the FIELDS men of Ray Co., MO, so it can be determined how they were related to each other and which ones (if any) were related to Ebenezer. The names are John, Joseph, Thomas, Stephen, Benjamin, Levi, Isaac (and all their juniors!). ------ In FCO 16 we ran the following, which was supplied by FCO member Kenneth D. Greenhalgh : Ken said, "This quotation from the privately published book _Genealogy of Field & Schmahorn Families_ compiled by Mrs. Sada Munkries Thompson 1974. Henry FIELD and Esther his wife of St. Mark's Parish, Culpeper County, hath ever since the marriage of our daughter Mary to Joseph JAMES had negroes in her our their possession as a lone or gift of the profits and benefit of them to her with a faithful promise that the Negroes and their increase should be her children's but never intended to give them to her. The Negroes hath this day increased (with themselves) to the number of eleven, namely Dick, Judy, Hannah, Rachel, James, Mill, Fan, Kein, Fillis, Janey, and Sarah, and it appears to us that their is sum reason at this time to make it known how far our daughter property runs in the above eleven Negroes and how they are to be divided and given amongst the children. We continue the lone and we give the use, profit or benefit of the eleven Negroes and their future increase to our daughter Mary for her support and succor during her natural life or marriage to another man, we give the eleven Negroes and their future increase equally to be divided amongst all their children that then shall be living by her present husband Joseph JAMES. And whereas it may be that some of her children then living may not be of full age to act for themselves, on application made to the Court of any of her children that is of age, the Court is impowered to order persons to make the division. However we have yet to find a single positive proof that Henry Field [Sr.] also called H. Field, Capt. No will has been found for Henry Field Sr., who was born ca1700. Does anyone have access to Will Book A of Culpeper Co? He is not in Book B or C. >From here we are tracking the other ancestors. I have copied many Westmoreland Co. records which contain Abraham, The Immigrant; Daniel, Abraham, and Henry. We will post the final findings on FCO when it is put together in an understandable form! It is interesting to discover that some of the long believed traditions are not correct. But more on that later. Now we need your help. If anyone who subscribes to FCO has access to Spotsylvania, Westmoreland, Essex, Orange, or Culpeper records and is willing to join in on this search, we would welcome you to our group. You can contribute what time and resources you have. I have some abstract books available locally, but we are hoping that someone who connects to this line will also have material available to pool together with ours. So if you are descended from one of Henry Field Jr's dozen children and have material available in your area to help us research his lineage, or if you decend from any of Abraham The Immigrant's lines, let me know. We look forward to sharing our findings with the other cousins at a later date. Gale Fuller
