FAMILY III Robert FIELD, Jr. (1776 VA - bef Oct 1823 Barren Co., KY) md. Sarah "Sally" DURRETT (ca1780 VA - aft 1831) on 19 Oct 1799 at Albemarle Co., VA. Robert was a son of Robert FIELD (1732-1823) and his second wife, Sarah (d. 1790). >From _Records of Marriage Bonds 1780-1806_: Bondsman: William WOOD, Jr. Witness: Alexander GARRETT Father: Marshall DURRETT gave his consent Witnesses: William WOOD, Jr. and William GRAYSON [B/C Papers, 1779] _The Virginia Genealogist_ Vol. 15, 1971 pp. 174-175 says Robert moved first to KY and later to Saline Co., MO. However, the transactions between his heirs and others all occurred in Barren Co., KY, and he apparently died there. Whether he ever lived in MO is doubtful; no members of FCO have been able to find proof that he did. His heirs conveyed 146 acres to Capt. John FIELD, supra. John and Robert had entered into a deal in 1822 whereby John paid off the land, located in Albemarle Co., VA, in installments. Robert inherited the land from their father, who was still living on it when the deal was made. Barren Co., KY Court Record October 1823, Page 299: On motion of Sarah Field widow and relict of Robt Field Dec'd certificate of Administration of the Estate the said Robert Field Dec in gratuity(?) whereupon she took this necessary oath and entered into bond with Landon Bagby and William Wood, Jr. her security in the sum of six thousand dollars conditioned as the law directs. (security being qualified) Barren County November County Court 1831, Page 13: On motion of Sarah Field & John Field who produced in court Bond given by Robert Field to John Field a tract of land in Albermarle Co., Virginia and satisfactory evidence being (?) to court the purchases money for said land hath been paid. Thereupon Joel (or Jack) Yancey, William Wood, Thompson Crenshaw be appointed commissioners on behalf of the infant heirs of the said Robert Fields to make conveyance of their title to said land and it is further ordered that said bond be recorded. [See FCO 16 for more complete information.] Robert and Sally had 12 children. Only two of their children, Nancy, and perhaps Sarah, seem to have moved to MO. A. Nancy C. FIELD (ca1800 - 22 May 1879 Buchanan Co., MO) md. Landon BAGBY (30 Dec 1795 Rockbridge Co., VA - 3 Sep 1874 St. Joseph, Buchanan Co., MO) on 24 Dec 1818 in Barren Co., KY. [FCO member Thomas A. Smith's wife, Barbara Ann (Lindemann) Smith, descends from Nancy and Landon BAGBY.] Landon was a brother of Richard BAGBY, who married Nancy's sister Sarah FIELD. BAGBY, Landon to Nancy FIELDS, Dec. 21, 1818, Sur: David R. TWYMAN. Md. Dec. 24, 1818 by Zacheus QUISENBERRY. [_Marriage Records of Barren Co., KY 1799-1849_ by Reneau, 1984] The Widow Pension Claim filed by his wife indicates that Landon was born in Rockbridge Co., VA. It also lists his date of death as 3 Sept. 1874. Landon served as a sergeant in the War of 1812 in the Company of Capt. James ELLIOTT and the 45th regiment of Col. James McDOWELL in the VA Militia. The Brigade was commanded by Gen. BRECKENRIDGE of Botetourt Co., VA. Landon served from Sept 1814 until his honorable discharge in Dec 1814. He was discharged at Camp Crossroads, MD. The Widow Pension Claim says he was discharged at Richmond, VA and later received a land warrant for forty acres. A land bounty application by Landon BAGBY dated 18 April 1854 shows him enlisting at Lexington in Rockbridge, Co., VA. The same document shows that he was discharged at Ellicots Mills at Patapsco, Carroll Co., MD, which was ten miles northwest of Baltimore. [Declaration for Pension] 1820 census shows Landon living in Barren Co., KY. He is listed as the head of a household. Listed in the entry next to him is a John BAGBY, who is probably his father. 1830 census shows him living in Barren Co., KY. John BAGBY is no longer listed as living in the same county. 1840 census lists him as living "E. of Barren" in Barren Co., KY. In 1842 there is a record of a land grant to Landon BAGBY in Barren Co. for six acres which is recorded in Book 10, page 304. The survey date was 14 Dec 1842. The watercourse is listed as Hallsrich Grove. [From _Kentucky Pioneer and Court Records_, pub. 1981] In 1843 they moved to MO. [Widow Pension Application] 1850 census shows them living on a farm in Buchanan County, MO. There was a Richard BAGBY living near Landon (enumerated on the same page of the census). He was likely Landon's brother, who married Nancy's sister, Sarah FIELD. [Our census information on Richard is incomplete, so we don't know if Sarah was enumerated in his household. -MMLA] A biographical sketch of Landon BAGBY written by their great-granddaughter Mildred S. NEWMAN indicates that "Each of my great grandparents lived to be seventy-nine years old. Landon died September 3, 1874...." It says that Landon was born in Amherst Co., VA. No other evidence corroborates this. It indicates that Nancy was 18 years old at the time of their marriage, meaning she was born ca1800. It further indicates that she died at age 79 and that she died on May 22, 1879. "Landon Bagby obtained a pre-emption certificate No. 3313, May 1, 1846, on Lots 1 through 7, located in the N.E. one-quarter of Section 1, Township 56, Range 35. The 158.09 acres are on the Agency Road which was originally an Indian Trail. (In the 1920s, it was part of the main highway to Kansas City.) William Johnson filed for record, October 11, 1879, on property where my grandparents built their home in Buchanan County." They moved to Buchanan Co., MO in about 1844, settling on a farm about six miles from St. Joseph and "thus became pioneers of what was known as the Platte Purchase." [from obituary of William M. BAGBY] His will was dated 18 Aug 1874. The will was presented in probate court by Richard BAGBY on 1 Oct 1874. Witnesses: Richard BAGBY and Henry TUTT. Executor: Isaac LOWER of Buchanan, MO. It named his wife, children, and "my grandchildren Landon Thompson, Robert A. Thompson and the children of my granddaughters Anna Hunt now deceased...." Landon and Nancy (FIELD) BAGBY are buried in a plot on their farm. The plot is located on a rise not too far from the location of their two-story house. In addition to the family, seven slaves are buried here; there are no markers for their graves. The following are the gravestone inscriptions: 1. Nancy C. Mother Wife of L. Bagby died May 22, 1879 aged 78 yrs. 8 mos. 5 days 2. Father Landon Bagby [dates are impossible to read] 3. Wm. Landon Bagby died Oct 29, 1873 aged 23 yrs. 10 mos. 26 days (Masonic symbol on stone) 4. Charles Bagby 5. A.B. Sherwood died Nov 21, 1890 aged 37 yrs. 10 mos. 4 days Landon and Nancy's children: 1. Sarah Jane BAGBY (d. 25 Sep 1845) md. Frank THOMPSON in 1837 in Barren Co., KY. The biographical sketch of Landon BAGBY written by his great-granddaughter Mildred S. NEWMAN says that "Sarah Jane the first born was married to Frank THOMPSON shortly before her eighteenth birthday." It also says, "Frank and Sarah Jane Thompson had their third child, William Landon, May 21, 1844. Sarah Jane died September 25, 1845." 2. John Rice BAGBY (b. ca1821 KY). 3. Charles Richard BAGBY (b. ca1823 VA - bef 3 Sep 1874). The biographical sketch of Landon BAGBY by Mildred S. NEWMAN indicates that Charles Richard was a son of Landon's and that he was not alive at the time of Landon's death on 3 Sep 1874. 1850 census: He was 27 yrs. old; born in VA. He was listed out of the age order at the bottom of the census entry. There is also another child listed, John, who is the same age. He was not mentioned in Landon Bagby's will. Perhaps he was not the son of Landon, but rather a relative living with them. 4. Robert Field BAGBY (14 Apr 1825 Glasgow, Barren Co. KY - 27 Jan 1909 Animas City, LaPlata Co., CO) md. Esther Summers PERKINS (23 Dec 1826 Barren Co., KY - 1 Dec 1914 LaPlata Co., CO) on 24 Sep 1854 at St. Joseph, Buchanan Co., MO. She was a daughter of Nicholas Summers BAGBY and Sarah Jane BRADFORD. Their children: a. William Nicholas BAGBY (15 Sep 1855 St. Joseph, Buchanan Co., MO - 4 May 1929 Durango, LaPlata Co., CO) was md. 22 Jun 1874 at Denver, Denver Co., CO to Maria Eugenie FLYNN. b. William Marshall BAGBY (29 Aug 1829 KY - 8 Feb 1917 Plattsburg, Clinton Co., MO) md. Caroline HUFFMAN on 16 Feb 1851 at Buchanan Co., MO. [Buchanan County, Missouri Marriage Records: 1839-1855] 1860 census: 30 yrs old in 1860; married to Caroline; four children: A. BAGBY, William L. BAGBY, Martha BAGBY, Henry C. BAGBY; listed next to Landon BAGBY in the census. 1870 Census: William BAGBY (age 41) lived in Buchanan Co., MO; farmer; property valued at $3,200 and personal property valued at $2,035; born in KY; residing with wife Caroline (aged 38, b. IN), daughter Euphora or Euphonia (aged 17, b. MO), son William L. (aged 14, b. MO), daughter Martha (aged 13, b. MO), son Henry C. (aged 10, b. MO), daughter Harriet (aged 8, b. MO), son Reuben (aged 6, b. MO), son Arther (aged 2, b. MO), and daughter Minnie (aged 4/12, b. MO). >From his obituary in the _Plattsburg (MO) Leader_: "William Marshall Bagby, son of Landon and Nancy Bagby, was born near Glasgow, Barren county, Kentucky, August 29, 1829, and died at his home in Plattsburg, Mo., February 8th, 1917, and was therefore 87 years 5 months and 10 days of age at the time of his death. "In 1844 when the deceased was about 14 years of age his parents removed to Buchanan County, Mo., and settled on a farm about six miles from St. Joseph and thus became pioneers of what was known as the Platte Purchase. Here he grew to manhood, married and lived until 1880 when he removed to Clinton county where he resided until the year 1904 when he retired from the farm and moved to his late home in Plattsburg. "He was married February 16, 1851 to Caroline Huffman, with whom he lived happily until her death February 12, 1904. To this union ten children were born, one dying in infancy and nine living to be grown. Two, Mrs. Euphora Sherwood and Dr. William Landon Bagby preceded him to the better world. He is survived by four sons and three daughters, twenty-six grand-children and ten great-grand children. The living children are Miss Jennie Bagby and Mrs. R. J. Sipe, of Plattsburg, Dr. H. C. Bagby of California, R. E. Bagby, Dr. A. H. Bagby and Dr. E. L. Bagby of Oklahoma and Mrs. B. D. Watson of Lebanon, Kansas. "Brother Bagby was converted when about 24 years old and united with the Methodist Episcopal church south [??] and for more than 60 years he lived a consecrated Christian life and until his health became impaired, was an active church worker, having been for many years a class leader, Sunday school superintendent and for more than forty years a steward in the church. "For a number of years he has been in feeble health during which time he has been most tenderly cared for by his children and especially is this true of his devoted daughter, Miss Jennie, who has been untiring in her devotion and loving kindness. Bro. Bagby was well versed in the scriptures and had a most implicit and child-like faith in God's promises and his approach toward death was with a calm and most sublime Christian resignation. He wrought well and the influence of his life and example will live after him. "The above obituary was read at the funeral service conducted at the church Sunday afternoon by the pastor, Rev. J. A. Medley, who was assisted by Rev. J. W. Perkins of the Christian church and Rev. J. M. Campbell of the Presbyterian church." 6. Matilda Ann BAGBY (ca1830 KY - aft 1878) probably never married. 7. Lucy Eveline BAGBY (b. ca1836 KY) md. William Pallis JOHNSON on 6 Aug 1865 at Buchanan Co., MO. >From the biographical sketch of Landon BAGY written by Mildred S. NEWMAN: "Lucy Eveline Bagby and William Pallis Johnson were married August 6, 1865. Lucy was the youngest of six children in the family of Nancy C. and Landon Bagby. Landon Claggett Johnson was born in 1866. A little sister, Leona Davis, joined the family in 1867 to live a short life. On Christmas day in 1869, she was buried in the family cemetery on the farm where her grandparents pre-empted land from the government. One year later, on December 25, Mary Susan (Sue) arrived. Another daughter, Nancy Emeline, (my mother), was born March 10, 1873. Her father nicknamed her Pink. Her brother Landon who was designated to care for her said sometimes he had to pinch her to see if she could cry. In 1875, a second son was born. Since his parents did not decide on a name, he was called 'Buddy.' After a church meeting at which Abner Copeland from St. Joseph was the speaker. Buddy announced to the family, 'My name is Abner Copeland Johnson.' "The Johnsons had a home built on the land which was Lucy's. The family attended church at Walnut Grove where my grandfather was a deacon. Landon Johnson taught school at Greenard, a nearby community and attended Ensworth Medical College in St. Joseph where he graduated at the top of the class and interned with Dr. Heddins in St. Joseph before moving to Taos, near Rushville, Missouri. Sue attended Rev. Charles Martin's Young Ladies Institute in St. Joseph until the death of her mother in 1888. Since Pink was the homemaker while her mother was ill, her education was in other areas. Abner graduated from Central High School. "The death of their father in 1903 left his daughters on the farm. Landon was practicing medicine and Abner was a supervisor at State Hospital No. 2. Dr. Woodson was superintendent at the hospital and my grandmother had been a friend of Mrs. Woodson. My mother was appointed supervisor of the sewing room and Aunt Sue supervised the laundry. "Dr. Landon Johnson eventually married Elizabeth Rice of Warrensburg, Missouri, and practiced medicine in the Joplin, Missouri, area until his death in May 1910. Pink married Jacob Meinema in 1908 and moved with their family to Missouri in 1915. Sue continued to work at the hospital and then lived with the Meinema family on the home place. Abner went to Colorado for health reasons and lived there from 1905 until his death in July 1910. "Pink lived for more than twenty years after the death of her husband (my father) and was buried on Christmas Eve in 1958. Aunt Sue lived just over two years after the death of her sister and died in February 1961. Both are buried in the Walnut Grove Cemetery on the Agency Road across the road from the location of the former Walnut Grove Church and the red brick schoolhouse which has been converted into a home." 1870 census: William JOHNSON age 32, b. KY; farmer Lucy age 34; born in KY; keeping house. They were enumerated in the same household as Landon BAGBY and had one male child aged four whose name is illegible in the census, though it may be Landon. The child's age would suggest that they were probably married ca1865. B. Joseph FIELD (b. ca1806) md. Lucy G. CRENSHAW on 19 Dec 1825 at Barren Co., KY. FIELD, Joseph to Lucy G.
