FCO 28 TABLE OF CONTENTS 1. FIELD(S) Who Migrated From VA to MO (with an Emphasis on the Descendants of John FIELD and Nathaniel FIELDS) 2. Benjamin FIELD and William FIELDS of KY 3. Correspondance 4. Queries ****** This article will trace the migration of the known FIELD(S) who migrated from Virginia to Missouri and then into other states. Most of the people in this article descended from John FIELD (d. 1789 Louisa Co., VA) and Nathaniel FIELDS (1727 - 1777 Rockingham Co., NC). John FIELD and Nathaniel FIELDS were in Hanover Co., VA at the same time--ca1750. Their relationship, if any, is unproven. Those two men represent dead ends for many FCO members. We will look first at the numerous descendants of John FIELD who made the move to Missouri. Later in this article, we will cover the known and presumed descendants of Nathaniel FIELDS who also migrated there. Several members of FCO descend from some of these people. They may be able to provide additional information on their lines upon request. The article will also cover other FIELD(S) who resided in MO; some have been identified, others have not. If anyone can add to or correct the information in this article, please contact the compiler, Majie Alley , or contact the designated FCO descendant. Many thanks to the FCO members who contributed information for this article: Betty June Turner Field, Robert L. Glenn, Bonnie Jones Graham, Corey Grua, Phil Hirl, Liam John Kingsmill, Matt Madigan, Alinda Miller, Virginia Winn Parker, Thomas A. Smith, and Dennis Yancey. Any omissions of contributors were unintentional. John FIELD (1774 Albemarle Co., VA - 1833 Cooper Co., MO) was a son of Robert FIELD and his second wife, Sarah. John married Sarah "Sally" WOOD (1778 Albemarle Co., VA - 5 Nov 1840 Cooper Co., MO) on 11 Sept 1795 in Albemarle Co. Their marriage bond was posted by William WOOD, Jr. It was witnessed by William WOOD, Jr. , Marchel DURIT [i.e. possibly the Marshall DURRETT below], and Benjamin BURGER. On the same consent form signed by her father; her cousin, William WOOD, Jr., affirmed that he saw his uncle, "Jessey WOOD," subscribe his consent. [Records of Marriage Bonds, 1780-1806; B/C Papers, 1793-1798] Sarah was a daughter of Jesse and Mildred "Milly" (WALKER?) TERRELL WOOD. Three of her siblings married three of her husband's siblings. [For more on the WOODs, see FCO 17 and 23.] John FIELD was a captain in the 8th Regiment, 4th Brigade of the Virginia militia in the War of 1812. According to History of Albemarle County in Virginia by Woods, reprinted 1982, his home was east of Batesville, where he operated a well-known public house for many years. In 1797 John received a gift of 30 acres in Albemarle Co. from his father, Robert FIELD. It was the beginning of his Batesville property. In 1806 He received a gift of 129 acres--Sarah's marriage portion from her father, Jesse WOOD. [DB15, p.46] In 1807 he conveyed to Marshall DURRETT; James WOOD; Charles MASSIE; Jonathan BARKSDALE; Oliver CLEVELAND; Thomas MASSIE; Henry EMERSON; William WOOD, Sr.; and John WOOD (son of Isaac WOOD) the land for the old Mount Ed Church, on the south side of the road and on the top of the hill near Whitesides Creek in Albemarle Co. He appeared on the 1820 Albemarle Co., VA census with one male over 45, one female 26-45, 14 children, and 12 slaves. On 24 Oct 1831, Capt. John FIELD sold 720 acres to Isaac WHITE, apparently as part of the sale of property prior to the family's move to Missouri. Office of Judge, Probate Court of Cooper County Don U. [sic] Field as administrator of Sarah Field's estate. There was no will shown in the Pleasant B. Oglesby Estate. [father of Martha Ann (OGLESBY) FIELD, wife of Jesse FIELD, who appears below -MMLA] We have copied the appointment of John B. Oglesby as administrator. Marriage info from _Marriage Bonds 1806-17_: Bondsman: Jesse WOOD, Jr. Witness: William WERTENBAKER Consent: John FIELD Witnesses: James W. FIELD and Jesse WOOD, Jr. Her birth date is estimated from her order in the naming of children in affidavits by her brothers James W. and Francis Moss FIELD regarding the estates of their parents. The other children seem to be in order of birth. She was living in Cooper Co., MO on 5 Nov 1840, when Francis Moss FIELD filed an affidavit regarding the estate of their mother, Sarah (WOOD) FIELD. They are thought to have been the parents of Emily ATKINSON, who married a Mr. WARE. Her daughter, Myrtie WARE, married a Mr. LEONARD, and they were the parents of Jack LEONARD, who was named in the will of his cousin, Joseph Field DULANEY of McKinney, Collin Co., TX in 1964. D. May 22, 1834 by Zacheus QUISENBERRY. [_Marriage Records of Barren Co., KY 1799-1849_ by Reneau, 1984] According to Pierce's _Field Genealogy_ and an affidavit regarding the estate of their mother, filed by Francis Moss FIELD, they lived in "Rice" Co., MO. Some of their siblings also were also said to have lived there. There never was a Rice Co. There was probably a misreading of handwriting or misspelling on the original document and it should read "Rives." [Lafayette Co. was later named Rives and then Henry.] James was appointed administrator of his father's estate. John FIELD had died intestate, as did his wife, although their estates were quite large. After James' death, Elizabeth and their children moved to Dallas, Texas. Cousin Corey Grua says, "James was the Calhoun, Henry Co., MO postmaster and owned a store in Calhoun. He brought several successful suits against various individuals between 1840-1858." >From p. 96 of _History of Henry and St. Clair Counties, MO, 1883_, by Printery, 1970: ". . . James Fields, who had a store at Goff's, put up the first house at Calhoun. In the winter of 1836-37, John and William Goff opened up a grocery store, while James Fields and Hall and Fletcher opened up general stores in the town of Calhoun. In the following summer came the McCormick's Dry Goods Store. By the fall of 1837, Calhoun was the leading business town in Henry County. The plat of the town covered forty acres, as laid out by Mr. Nash. The first lot sold of which there is any account was bought for eighteen dollars on the eleventh day of May, 1837. In June James W. Fields bought two lots for which he paid $25.00. In 1837 James Fields was appointed postmaster of the first postoffice in the county, which had been at Goff's from 1835 to 1837 with William Goff as postmaster. He moved the postoffice to Calhoun the same year a postoffice was established at Clinton." 1840 MO Federal Census, Henry Co. (known as Rives Co. before 15 Oct 1841); p. 358 James W. FIELD males under 5 1 males 5-10 1 males 10-15 1 males 20-30 3 males 30-40 1 females under 5 1 females 20-30 1 Corey Grua says: "As you know, only the head of the house was listed by name in the 1840 census. This James W. FIELD appears to be the correct family. I've found younger brothers listed in Henry Co. records: William H. and Francis M. James W. died sometime before November of 1850. His death location is still a mystery, but we are leaning toward Benton Co., since the family is found there in the 1850 census. Henry Co. probate records for the November term show two actions by his estate administrators, William H. FIELD (brother) and James ATKISSON, a former business partner. [James ATKISSON was probably James ATKINSON/ATKISSON, husband of James' sister, Lucy W. FIELD. -MMLA] "This evening, a new film came in to the FHC, confirming our hunch that James W. moved with his family to Benton Co. just before he passed away. The census exercise for Dennis confirmed this as well. "In a Benton Co. bonds and administrations book I viewed this evening, I found the following on page 143 (FHC film # 0945736): presents [sic] that we James Atkisson as principal & Felix Hunton [or Hunter] and Edward L. Major as surities are held and firmly bound to the State of Missouri in the sum of One thousand dollars to be paid to the State of Missouri aforesaid to which payment will and truly to be made we bind ourselves as heirs executors and administrators firmly by there presents sealed with our seals and dated this 11 day of Jan in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty. The conditions of the above bond is that of James Atkinsson Administrator of the estate of James W. Field deceased shall faithfully administer said estate account for pay and deliver all money and property of said estate and perform all other things touching said Administrations required by law or the order of any court having jurisdiction then the above bond to be void otherwise to remainin full force. James Atkisson (seal) Felix Hunton (seal) Edward L. Major (seal) Filed for Review January 30 A.D. 1850. "We found a purchase of land made by a J.W. FIELDS recorded on 9 Jan1850 in Henry Co. That's a bit confusing with the 11 Jan 1850 date listed above. Perhaps he had an agent making the purchase or had just been over the county boundaries a day or two before he died. "[James ATKINSON/ATKISSON] seems to have been a business partner with James W. in Henry Co. under the title of Field and Atkisson. He was Sheriff of Saline Co. in 1840. [_History of Saline County_, 1881, p. 235] Cousin Tom Smith , who supplied much of the information on Judge FIELD for this article, found the following biographical sketch in an 1876 Plat book, Saline Co., MO, in the Saline Co. Historical Society Library at Marshall, MO: "JUDGE ROBERT FIELD" "Judge Field was born in Albemarle county, Va. Dec 14th 1803. When seventeen years of age he engaged as salesman and manager for Samuel Miller, a wealthy merchant and tobacconist of Lynchburg. He remained there four or five years and then went to Richmond and did business with a brother, Jas. W. Field, as family grocers. While in Richmond he married Miss Nancy W. Piper, of Albemarle county. In 1830 he left Richmond and arrived in Saline county and began business here by entering some two hundred and fifty acres of land, on which he settled and which forms a part of his present home. He taught one or two terms of school while getting his premises ready for farming, and then turned his attention entirely to this business and in the growing of and trading in live stock. He pushed his possessions in real estate up to about one thousand acres, and was once a very extensive farmer. In former days he was an active political worker, and has often rendered the Democratic party valuable service. He has been honored by the people a number of times with official trusts. He was once county assessor, twice sheriff, and served two terms as one of the judges of the County Court, and filled each of those positions with efficiency and impartiality. "The late war found him a true friend of the south, and he was, as a consequence, considerably harassed by the Federals and the state militia, and on one occasion they put a rope around his neck, preparatory to hanging him, simply on the score of being an avowed friend of the south. His first wife died in this county and left nine children, and he was again married to Miss Fanny Combs, formerly of Kentucky, by whom he has had one child -the wife of Edward McQuey, of Pike county. "The Field family owe their origin to England. They probably settled in Virginia on coming to this country. The Judge's grandfather on his father's side, Robert, at least was born in that state. He married and raised a family in Virginia, of whom we mention John, Mr. Field's father. He was married to Miss Sarah Wood. He raised a very large family, some fourteen children in all, and died in Cooper County, Mo., a short time after he settled there, in 1831 or '32. He commanded a company in the war of 1812, and was a true southern man of sterling moral worth." >From _History of Saline County_, 1881, pp. 628-629: "JUDGE ROBERT FIELD, Sr., P.O., Little Rock. The subject of the following sketch is the son of John and Sarah Field, and was born in Albemarle county, Virginia, December 14, 1803. In June, 1830, he loaded his team at Richmond, Virginia and moved to Missouri. He was married in Virginia on the 14th of December 1829 to Miss Nancy Piper, who bore him four sons, and three daughters. On the 16th of June, 1844, his wife died, and in December, 1846, he was married again to Miss Fannie H. Combs, and by this marriage he has one daughter. His second wife died May 13, 1869, and he married the third time, on the 14th day of September, 1871, to Mrs. Catherine Morrison. Judge Field is one of the old settlers and one of the solid farmers of Saline county. He served the county as sheriff for two terms, 1840 to 1844 and was judge of the county court for years." Same source: "ARROW ROCK TWP. CONCORD CHURCH (CHRISTIAN)" "The date of organization of this church cannot be definitely ascertained, but it was in 1845 or 1846. Some of the first members were Chas. Wood, Daniel Thornton, Philip Thompson, Sam'l Green, Rob't Fields, Adam France, Wm. Roper. A frame church building, costing $700 or $800, was erected in 1845 or 1846, and dedicated in the latter year, by Rev. Thomas Allen." In 1866 he returned to this county, and purchased the farm on which he now lives, and commenced farming, which he has continued to the present time, except a winter passed in Texas, where he went to locate, but did not like the country. In 1874 he moved to Marshall and entered into the banking business under the firm of Wood & Huston. They commenced with a capital of $20,000, which has now (in 1881) been increased to $50,000, with a surplus of $25,000. Mr. Wood was married in 1854 to Miss Jennie Fields, daughter of Judge Fields, of Saline county. She died in 1856, and he was again married in 1873 to Mrs. Wm. However, according to the 1860 Saline Co., MO census, Susan and William were listed with a child, Virginia, aged 2. She may have been Jennie. It may have been Catherine, and they were either married 25 Jul 1872 or 14 Sep 1871 in Saline Co., MO. Or she might have been the woman named in the section of this article of unidentified Missouri FIELD(S). That record gives a marriage between a Robert FIELD and Cynanitha (or Semantha) MORRISON on 27 Sep 1869 in Saline Co. Finally, a Cimantha FIELD (1846-1908)--also in the unidentified section--is buried in Fish Creek Cemetery, which is where Robert is buried. The dates would be right for that to have been her name as well. If she was Cynanitha, they had a son, Marion FIELD (July 5, 1870 - Sept. 17, 1953). No. 874 050 067, half Pay. 8 Oct. 1832. Daviess Co., Ky. Benjamin Field of said county, aged 75, declares that in August or early Sept. 1780 he was appointed an ensign in Maj. George Slaughter's battalion of Col. Crockett's regiment in the Virginia State Line which was stationed at the falls of the Ohio (now Louisville). He served therein under Capt. Mark Thomas and Lt. Joseph Saunders until the next spring when he was promoted to a captaincy of cavalry. Previous to entering service he lived in Culpeper Co.,Va., but came to the falls in the spring of 1780 with Maj. Slaughter and was a volunteer in the summer of that year under Col. Clark in the expedition to the Piqua towns and on the return was appointed ensign. In the fall of 1780 he returned to Virginia with Col. Clark who during the winter was appointed brigadier general. In the spring of 1781 he repaired to Red Stone for the purpose of descending the river to join his company at the falls where he was overtaken by Gen. Clark, when Maj. John Crittenden handed him his commission as captain. He commenced recruiting his company and by the time Gen. Clark and Col. Crockett were prepared to descend the river in the summer of 1781 he had raised his troops and descended the river with them to the falls. In descending the river he came from Redstone old fort to Pittsburgh where Col. Gibson and Dr. Knight were stationed, whom he knew. At Pittsburgh he left the boats and traveled across the country with his troop, by Cat-fish, where Washington, Pa., now stands, and joined the army again at Wheeling, where it was expected Gen. Loughery of the Pennsylvania militia would join the army with his command. But arriving at Wheeling a short time after Gen. Clark left, he attempted to descend the river in pursuit of the army and was met by the Indians near the mouth of Big Miami and defeated. At the falls of the Ohio he knew Brig. Gen. George R. Clark, Maj. John Crittenden his aide, Col. Joseph Crockett, Maj. George Walls, Capt. William Cherry, Capt. Thomas Young, Lt. Peter Moore, Lt. Hugh McGavock and others of the said regiment; Col. Montgomery, Maj. Thomas Quirk, Capt. Isaac Taylor of the Illinois Regiment; and Capt. John Rogers of cavalry. In Sept. 1781 he lost almost the whole of his troop in an engagement with the Indians eighteen or twenty miles above the falls at what was called Floyd's Defeat, who were commanded by his lieutenant, he not being present on that occasion. He served until the army was disbanded in Dec. 1781 when he retired as a supernumerary captain. 27 June 1842. Green Co., Ky. Gen. Elias Barbee, aged between 79 and 80, declares he knew Maj. Benj. Field during the Revolutionary War and he was an officer under Col. Clark. About 1790 he married Miss Mildred Slaughter at Barbee's house near the Lincoln and Mercer Co., Ky., lines and near Danville, Ky. Mildred was Barbee's sister-in-law. After their marriage they moved to Daviess Co., Ky. 1 June 1833. Ohio Co., Ky. Benjn. Field's corps of light dragoons under Brig. Gen. George Rogers Clark, 64 days, and from 12 Sept. 1781, being the day he was taken prisoner, to 30 Jan. 1783, being the day he returned home on parole, 595 days - 252.1.8. G. R. Clark certified that Mr. Joseph Ramsay served as a lieutenant in Capt. Thomas Quirk's company of the Illinois Battalion from 1 Jan. 1779 to 1 Nov. 1780. 18 June 1831. Daviess Co., Ky. Benjamin Field, aged 74, declares in 1780 he entered the State Establishment of Viginia as ensign under Col. George Slaughter, commandant at the falls of the Ohio (then in Virginia). He continued as ensign until he received a commission of captain dated 28 May 1781 and served as such until the end of the war. He never received bounty land or pay from Virginia. 13 Feb. 1832. Shepherdsville, Ky. Joseph Saunders declares he served as lieutenant in Capt. Mark Thomas' company in Col. George Slaughter's corps attached to Col. Crockett's regiment stationed at the falls of Ohio, now Louisville, in 1781. Benjamin Field was appointed ensign in Capt. Thomas' company in the summer of 1780 to succeed Ens. Asher who was killed by the Indians. In the spring of 1781 the deponent was sent by the commanding officer to Richmond and did not return until the next winter. Before he left Field served with much honor to himself and credit to the service. He is 75 years old and past. 20 Feb. 1832. Versailles, Ky. John (X) Allen declares he is in his 80th year since January last. He was stationed at the falls of the Ohio River in 1780 with Col. George Slaughter's corps. Benjamin Field received the appointment of ensign in Capt. Thomas' company in the summer of that year and served until the deponent received a leave of absence the next fall to return to Virginia. He understoond Field also returned to Virginia the same fall. The deponent came down the river to the falls of the Ohio with Col. Crockett's regiment in the spring of 1781. He met Benjamin Field in the Red Stone country in the spring of 1781 and understood he had been promoted to a captaincy in a troop of horse in the Virginia State Library [sic, ??]. Field raised his company of horse, in which Thomas Ravenscroft was an officer. They came to the falls of the Ohio, now Louisville, in the spring or early summer of 1781, perhaps in June with Col. Crockett's regiment and were stationed there. Part of the troop was at some of the stations near the falls and part was under Col. Floyd when defeated by the Indians in September of that year. Thomas Ravenscroft and others were taken prisoner and Robert Ravenscroft was killed. The deponent was raised near Field in Virginia and they were acquainted from boys. 23 July 1832. Maysville, Ky. Benjamin Whaly declares he is 72 years old. Benjamin Field and he received captains' commissions from the State of Virginia in the spring of 1781, in the State line, he in a troop of horse and the deponent in infantry. He knows he recruited his troop, as the deponent was enlisting his company at the same time. He descended the river with his troop in the spring of 1781 with Gen. Clark and Col. Crockett's regiment and was stationed at the falls of the Ohio (now Louisville). In September of that year he lost the greater part of his troop at what was called Floyd's defeat. He continued in service to the fall of 1781 or the next winter and then remained a supernumeraty [sic] officer, liable to be called at any time. In 1782 there were many officers of that class in the Virginia State Line. 23 July 1832. Maysville, Ky. Thomas Young declares he is 81 years old. He commanded a company in Crockett's regiment. Benjamin Field commanded a troop of horse in the Virginia State Line and descended the river in the spring of 1781 to the falls where he was stationed. He lost a large portion of his company in Sept. 1781 at Floyd's defeat. In the fall of1781 the time of enlistment of the deponent's company expired and he left the falls as a supernumerary officer and did not return. He believes Field was in service to the end of the war as supernumerary. 9 May 1838. R. Hawes, House of Representatives, states he had known Capt. Benjamin Whaley from 1817 until his death. His residence was but a few doors from that of Capt. Whaley in the city of Lexington. 13 July 1838. Shelbyville, Ky. James Ballard, now in the 76th or 77th year of his age, declares in 1779 he became acquainted with Capt. Benjamin Field in Spotsylvania or Culpeper Co., Va. Field and the deponent's family came to Kentucky. He thinks Field acted as an ensign in Slaughter's corps for some time. He was acquainted with Field in 1781 at the falls of the Ohio. In the spring of 1781 Fields was in command of a troop of horse and continued in command until a few days before Floyd's defeat when a large portion of his troop was required to go to Boone's Station to move the families from there to Bear Grass Station. On their way down, while encamped, the Indians made an attack on them and killed nearly all the men, women and children. He thinks Ravenscroft, Field's lieutenant, was taken prisoner. Field with the remainder of the troop was with the affiant in an engagement with the same body of Indians the next day and the whites were again defeated and Field's company nearly all killed, as well as the remainder of the whites. Field was left without a command. 28 June 1839. Daviess Co., Ky. Benjamin Field gives power of attorney to secure half pay. Jan. 1842. Daviess Co., Ky. John Field and William Field, with Willis Field and Thomas Field their securities, acknowledged bond for $15,000.00 as administrators of the estate of Benjamin Field. 12 July 1842. Daviess Co., Ky. Since the appointment, John Field has died. William is still living and acting as administrator. The Auditor of Virginia reported that Benjamin Field on 6 March 1784 received a certificate for the balance of his full pay amounting to 116.14.0 as an ensign in the State line. The certificate was delivered to Wm. Helm. Warrant 7238 for 400 acres was granted by Virginia to Benja. Field for three years as captain of cavalry in the Virginia State Line. It was satisfied by the issue of scrip by the General Land Office in 1832. Benjamin Field of Daviess Co., Ky., private of infantry and captain in the regiment of Col. He was forted at Harrodsburg for nearly three years, sometimes scouting. He was born in Ireland, came to America when small, and 60 years ago came to this western country where he has resided ever since. 5 April 1832. When the war first commenced in this country in 1777 William Fields was one of the first to turn out. He knows he served upwards of three years. He remembers being in the fort at Harrodstown, now Harrodsburg, when Clark came and took command of them. Guards were kept at McMurtry's Station and sometimes they were drafted. 7 April 1835. Charles Caldwell and Robert Pass declare William Fields died 5 March 1835 leaving James Fields, Daniel Fields, Henry Fields, and Elizabeth Rogers and Ellin Leachman, children of Mary Chiles late Mary Fields, deceased, who was the only daughter of William Fields, and who are the only heirs of William Fields. 2 July 1851.
