Evans 5103 Williams Fork Trail, Apt 109, Boulder, Colorado 80301-3417. "Benjamin HUNTER bc 1775--1845-06-25, son of John HUNTER and Rachel MCFARLAND md Marriage Bond 1804-02-17 Campbell County, Virginia, Elizabeth FIELDS "Betsy" bc 1780--1855-04-18, daughter of Andrew FIELDS and Margaret GALBREATH. They were md by the Rev. Edmund JOHNS. Elizabeth was born on her father's farm in Buckingham County, Virginia and grew up on his farm some five miles downstream on the Falling River from the HUNTER's. Benjamin inherited some of this land when Andrew FIELDS died. Benjamin was commissioned a major in the 117'th Campbell County Militia in 1807 and was addressed as Major HUNTER. He also served in the Virginia General Assembly, representing Campbell County in the years 1825-1829. He was a man of influence and wealth, was dignified and cultured. He was tall, had red hair and blue eyes and was fair complexioned. He joined Old Concord Presbyterian Church, Appomattox County, Virginia 1837-11-25, was a ruling elder and active in church affairs. Elizabeth was tall, well-proportioned, had black hair and piercing black eyes. She was beautiful, intelligent and very religious. Both are buried in the Ben HUNTER family cemetery at Map Co-ordinates N 37 53' 50.36". Benjamin built a fine brick home some 700 meterseast of the confluence of Falling River and Reedy Creek in what is now Appomattox County, Virginia. Map Co-ordinates N 37 54' 01.60". This home was destroyed by fire and a white frame house now occupies the same spot. Their is some confusion as to the marriage date of Benjamin and Elizabeth-- some sources say 1801 and some 1804, but I believe that she was the mother of all of his children. [some researchers say that Elizabeth was his second wife, but no records have been found to prove this]. They had a total of 100 grandchildren-what a prolific family!!! All of their children were born in Campbell County, Virginia in that portion which is now Appomattox County, Virginia. All of their children were md in Campbell County, Virginia except Edward who md in Bedford County, Virginia. The 1845 Tax List of Appomattox County shows that Benjamin HUNTER owned 623 acres on land on Falling River and Reedy Creek [8 farms] assessed at $3260 on which he paid taxes of $3. 26. This land was taken from Campbell County in 1845 in the formation of Appomattox County." ****** This month we continue Chapter V of the book by Cousin Jack Roberts . The book covers not only FIELD families but many other lines which intermarried with FIELD. We'll pick up this month where we left off in Issue 22, which was covering Family 56-57 WILLIAM COX (1764) and HANNAH (1766). Jack says, In 1994 Dr. John F. Vallentine of Brigham Young University in Utah (and I) finished writing The Roberts-Orme Ancestry, Volume I, which I published here in New Zealand. Since publishing that book I've published Volume II, this latter treating the ancestry of my former wife. Now I'm working on extending the lines, making corrections, filling in the gaps, etc., for both volumes. I hoped originally to write and publish a third volume which would extend the pedigrees from the first two volumes back into their European phases;whether that effort materializes as a book remains to be seen. The focus of the books is to start with my grandchildren and to work backward (genealogically) in time toward their ancestors rather than beginning with a single (set of) ancestral family/families and working forward. I charge US$40.00 postpaid (economy air mail overseas) for Volume I, US$60.00 for Volume II. Volume I has 346 pages; Volume II, 443 pages; each with an index of 4-5000 names. I mail them from here: John Roberts, 7 Manchester Place, Queenstown, New Zealand. (You'll undoubtedly appreciate that the cost of production was about double the asking price, and that doesn't include any of the costs of research -- I hired a professional genealogist, Dr. Vallentine, to research the families and then write the preliminary drafts.) As I'm hesitant to suggest that people buy them I've sent more than 100 copies to various public libraries around the U.S. and plan to send more. You have my permission to make any use of them that you like, including extensive quotes. I often send large hunks of it via internet and the mail. If you have other questions I'll be glad to answer them. I ought to stress that I'm just an editor, proof-reader, typist, and general flunkie and very definitely don't even vaguely border on being a genealogist! Best regards, Jack Roberts ********** Family 246-247 WILLIAM LONG (1726) and ANN DURRETT (1730) WILLIAM LONG (the traditional name of Mr. Long the husband of Ann Durrett) was b. abt 1726; md. ANN DURRETT, b. abt 1730 prob. in Spotsylvania Co., Va., and dau. of John Durrett (1700) and wife Mary (1704). Children (Durrett) -- prob. all b. Spotsylvania Co.: ELIZABETH. AGATHA. *CATHERINE, b. abt 1757; md. ELIJAH DURRETT WATTS. SUSANNA. ANN. MARY (prob. dau.), md. Mr. SHELTON. BRUMFIELD (prob. son). In his will dated 30 July 1773 John Durrett provided a life legacy for his dau. Ann Long and her children Elizabeth, Agatha, Ann, Catherine, and Susannah (Spotsylvania Co. Wills, E:107). He further provided for his grandson Broomfield Long and his granddaughter Mary Shelton; the wording in the will implies that they were also children of Ann Long. The tradition that the name of Ann (Durrett) Long's husband was William Long is given without verification in A Short History of Durrett-Stone-Cox Families (D145). William Long and wife Ann of Spotsylvania Co. conveyed a tract of 250 a. in that county (bought of Thomas West in 1744) to Thomas Duerson on 2 July 1745 (Spotsylvania Co. Deeds, D:224). If this couple were the ancestral couple, their birth years may have been a few years earlier than estimated above. Another lead is that Richard Long of Spotsylvania Co. in his will dated 11 Nov 1761 provided for his wife Elizabeth and his six sons including William (Spotsylvania Co. Wills, D:29), but no further evidence has been found on Mr. Long, the husband of Ann Durrett.(B236, B237, D36, D145) Family 248-249 EPHRAIM SEAMANDS, SR. Again selling out, Ephraim moved before 1744 to Orange Co., Va., where as a gentleman farmer he owned many slaves and a farm that apparently straddled the Orange-Albemarle Co. boundary. A planter and slave owner, he lived on his plantation called "Wakefield" near Earlyville, in the northern part of Albemarle Counties, but he owned land in both Albemarle and Orange Counties. Members of this branch of the Durrett family are buried in the cemetery at Wakefield. In his will dated 18 Oct 1784 and probated in Albemarle Co. in Dec 1784, Richard divided his estate among his eight named children and appointed his son Richard (Jr.) and son-in-law Robert Sanford as executors (Albemarle Co. On 20 Feb 1766 he and Richard Durrett of Albemarle Co. gave a slave girl to George Martin, son-in-law of Richard. Such a transaction suggests a close relation between these heads of lines, John and Richard possibly being brothers. In his will dated 30 July 1773 and probated 16 Feb 1775 in Spotsylvania Co., John made special legacies to Ann Long, her children, and to his daughter Elizabeth Chiles and her children. Deeds, D:734, 314). Abraham was a vestryman of Great Fork Church in Culpeper Co. from 1744 to 1774. In a court case in Fauquier Co. dated 4 May 1788 (Heirs of James Withers vs. Executors of Elizabeth Withers, Widow of said James Withers, Deceased), John, Daniel, William, Henry, Elizabeth, Eleanor, and Judah were named as heirs (D163). Although Abraham Field was also listed as a Withers heir, this is apparently wrong since his father Abraham's will stated that he was a son of Elianah rather than of Elizabeth. Most or all of old Abraham's sons later migrated to Kentucky.
