Pruitt. ISBN # 0-944992-26-9. Majie has some more information from this book regarding names of more loyalists in 1782 (no FIELD(S) appear on that list so it was not included here). She will be happy to provide that list upon request. "Legislation about Confiscated Property" "Legislation against the loyalists in North Carolina began as early as Dec. 1774 when the Halifax Committee of Safety passed a resolve against Andrew Miller. In Apr. 1776 the Provincial Congress for Legislature passed a resolve to move loyalist prisoners while allowing them to dispose of their property. In May 1776 the same body passed a resolve to confiscate the property of people who were convicted of taking up arms against the United States. In Apr. 1777, the Legislature passed a law defining treason. This law also included an oath of allegiance to the State to be taken by persons who had 'traded directly' with Great Britain during the previous 10 years. By an act passed in Dec. 1777 the oath was required of every male over 16 years old. "Because many citizens failed to take the oath, the law was revised in 1778. The Commissioners of Confiscated Property in each county were allowed to summon the loyalists and make a list of their property. The property could be rented in tracts of 640 or less. The Commissioners or the county court could sell the remaining property (including slaves); however, a dower share was reserved for the widow and children if they remained in the state. The Commissioners could also settle any outstanding debts owed to the loyalists. The Commissioners were allowed a percentage of the sale. "But protests to the Legislature were made against this act including one in Oct. 1779 by Mecklenburg County residents. The complainants felt the land should be sold, rather than rented, and that the heirs should only have claims to the estate for a fixed period. "In Nov. 1779, the confiscation law was made stringent by naming prominent loyalists and allowing confiscation of the property of people who had left the state. This law mentions the following people: William Tryon esq Josiah Martin esq Sir Nathaniel Duckinfield Henry Eustace McCulloch Henry McCulloch Samuel Cornell Edmund Fanning Thomas Macknight 'late' of Currituck Co. James Parker William McCormack John Dunlap Neal Snodgrass John Lancaster 'late' of Pasquotank Co. Thomas Oldham 'late' of Chowan Co. Chancey Thownsend Doctor Tucker 'late' of Wilmington Buchanan, Hastle, & Company "By 1780 many people had been arrested, but the state was in danger of invasion by the British. So in Sept. 1780 an act allowed the prisoners to be tried by county magistrates. If guilty, the prisoner could be executed and his property confiscated by the sheriff. To aid prosecutions, the Governor was allowed (in 1781) to call special sessions of court and name special judges. Confiscation of property became very profitable. So it was regulated by law. The Commissioners of Confiscated Property or sheriffs were the only ones allowed to confiscate property (partly because some innocent people had their property taken). Only minor changes were made to the confiscation laws in 1781 and 1782 partly due to the British presence in the state. Some loyalists tried to sell their property and avoid confiscation. But these sales were declared void by the Legislature." Cousin Sarah Sharpless says, "The book also contains abstracts of confiscated property sales -- with names not included in the lists of people (Tories) in the introduction (lots of Kimbro's). Anyone who's doing research in NC probably ought to check out this book." ****** Mrs. Mildred (?) TERRELL WOOD was the widow of Reuben TERRELL when she married Jesse WOOD. Mildred and Jesse WOOD had six children. Four of the WOOD siblings married four of the children of Robert FIELD (ca1732-1824). Majie Alley says, "Mildred was the mother-in-law of Capt. John FIELD, a son of Robert FIELD. His wife's name was Sarah WOOD. They had 14 children. Capt. John, Sarah, and their children moved from Albemarle Co., VA to Cooper and surrounding counties, MO ca1832. Mildred's maiden name is not proven, as far as I know, but circumstantial evidence is mounting that it might have been WALKER. 1. Capt. John and Sarah (WOOD) FIELD's oldest child was named Mildred Walker "Milly" FIELD--former President George BUSH's ancestor. (One of BUSH's names was Walker, which may or may not be significant.) In any event, Milly may have been named for her maternal grandmother, since that would fit the naming pattern of the time. 2. Another of their children was named Dr. John Walker FIELD. His middle name appears on the marriage record to his first wife. 3. Yet another of Mildred and Jesse WOOD's grandchildren, through their son, Jesse WOOD, was named Richard Walker WOOD. 4. A deed (written 6 Feb 1856, filed 9 Feb 1856) between an Oscar H. REDMON of Layfayette Co., MO and James H. WALKER of Cooper Co., MO suggests a FIELD/WALKER connection: REDMON was selling WALKER two mares, which he had bought from Anthony S. WALKER of Cooper Co. There was a lot of trading around in order for REDMON to pay off a debt to Jesse FIELD (another son of Capt. John and Sarah ( WOOD) FIELD, who was living in Lafayette Co., MO at the time). The WALKERs seemed to have facilitated the deal by James WALKER buying the mares for $5--when REDMON had actually paid $300 to Anthony WALKER for them, and Jesse FIELD was to sell them for market value and keep the cash. ****** From: "Herb Hendricks" Subject: Major Connections To a number of people who have asked me for names that are connected to the Major families in VA. This will only be a partial listing. Others are given in the book I am going to quote from. James Branch Cabell wrote THE MAJORS AND THEIR MARRIAGES. Note there are some errors as some Charles City Co., VA. data was not available to Cabell when he wrote the book. Allied lines given in the book with rather good lineage data you can abstract are as follows: Aston, Ballard, Branch, Britton, Charles, Chistian, Dancey, Field, Harris, Hartwell, Hubard, Jefferson, Macon, Marable, Mason, Patteson, Piersey, Seawell, Sease, Stephens, Turpin, Waddill, and others. The book can be found in the VA Archives. A copy of the original manuscript can be ordered from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA. Accession NO. 5947-JJBC. I don't remember the cost of the copy of the manuscript, but it was reasonable. HerbH. hendherb@visi.net *********** 31 Mar 1997 Dear Mary: We corresponded in February and March of 1996 concerning Field genealogy. I am a descendant of Abraham Field who settled in Jefferson Co., KY in the 1780s. He was the grandson mentioned in the will of Abraham (d. 1775) in Culpeper Co., VA. You mentioned that one of your Internet group is also a descendant of my Abraham's father. I'm wondering if it has ever been considered that Abraham Sr.'s son Daniel was deceased in 1774 and that he could be the missing father of the Kentucky Abraham. When comparing the wording of items mentioning Daniel in the wills of Abraham and of his son, Col. John, this seems possible to me. Do you have any information about the death of Daniel or know of any of his offspring? Could there have been a Culpeper estate settlement or tax list that might shed light on the subject? Sincerely, Ruth Wandel 3951 Terra Trace Ct. Evansville, IN 47715 ------------- I am looking for information regarding George Henry FIELDS b 1858 married Sarah A. HESS b 1872. George and Sarah lived in the Russell and Tazewell Co., Va. areas. My gr-grandfather, their son, William Martin FIELDS b. 06 Jun 1889 in Meadowview, Russell Co., Va. married Bertha Edna NORMAN b. 02 Sep 1894. She was the daughter of Franklin Moses NORMAN and Nancy Ann WATSON. Does anyone have any information regarding George Henry FIELDS? Parents or sibling information I could use? Any and all replies greatly appreciated. Thanks, Gina Rose --------- I have just spoken to Harold Sam Pendley from Pickens County. He tells me that there is a large group of Fields relatives in Pickens County, Georgia. They have put a new headstone on the grave of Thomas Fields and Susanna Humphrey Fields which includes all the names of the children of Thomas and Susanna. Apparently Thomas and Susanna first moved to Pickens before coming to Gwinnett Co. When they died they were buried in Pickens. >From what I am told we are distantly related to just about everyone in Pickens County. They have a Fields family reunion on the 2nd Sunday in September. When the Fields family returned to Pickens County, Morgan was the only Fields who chose to remain in Gwinnett and that is where he married Parthenia Frances Taylor and raised his family. The timing on this is not yet clear. According to this branch of the family the line from Thomas Fields, Esq to Thomas Fields who moved to Georgia was not William. They have the line as Thomas Fields, Esq > Reuben Fields > Thomas Fields. No other major differences that I am aware of. Randall W. Fields
