FCO 21 TABLE OF CONTENTS 1. FIELDS & COFFEY Connection 2. Lineage of Richard FIELDS, Albemarle Co., VA 3. Queries ****** COFFEYs intermarried with and had dealings with FIELD/FIELDS lines in VA, particularly in Albemarle Co. There was also some intermarriage with GILLIAM, another line that ties into FIELD in Virginia. These COFFEY/FIELDS moved to the same part of NC as the descendants of Nathaniel FIELDS of Hanover Co., VA. There is no proof we have seen that they were connected to that line of FIELDS. >From Cousin Jim Deans : James Coffey was the first son of John Coffey of Albemarle County who married Jane Graves. Their children were: James Thomas who moved to NW NC William John Edmond Rubin Benjamin Winefred Morin Betty Fields (she had married a Fields) This is per the will of John Coffey 31 Mar 1774: John moved to Albemarle in 1741 from Spotsylvania county. James born in 1729 married ca1750 Orange Co. ca1750 to Elizabeth Cleveland. On 20 Aug 1750 James entered 115 acres land in North Garden Albemarle County adjoining John Coffey. On 13 Dec 1764 James bought 300 acres from Gen. Thomas Jefferson in Amherst County on the Tye river for 300 pounds. James moved from Albemarle to Wilkes county NC in 1776 becoming a Baptist missionary and founding a Baptist church in the area that is now North WIlkesboro, NC from which both of his parents came. -------------- The following information appeared in the newsletter _Fields Family Findings_ Vol 5 # 2 - June 1989. Coffey; they had 7 sons. From: Harold Narron 1725 Quincey Lane, Fairfield, CA 94533 Regarding Richard and Elizabeth (MURRELL) FIELDS: I am not a Fields researcher, however, the first husband of my ancestor, Elizabeth (MURRELL) FIELDS GILLIAM, was Richard Fields. An account written by William BERRY, a grandson of Richard and Elizabeth Fields, said that both of them were from Amherst Co., VA. After Richard died, Elizabeth married John GILLIAM, of whom I am a descendant. The Fields children moved to NC along with a relatively large group at the end of the Rev. War. Fields, RWFields@aol.com To: Majie Alley, majiea@earthlink.net I hate to bother you with a lot of questions but I am having a little problem with some of the dates for the ancestors you gave me. I assume that you or someone has seen documentation. The problem is Richard Fields was born c.1735, married Elizabeth Murrell in Oct 1757 who married John Guillam on 27 Sep 1764. In other words Richard and Elizabeth had 4 children in less than 7 years. (I can believe this because something close happened in my family. I was born Mar 1949, sister Sep 1950, sister Mar 1952, brother June 1956. Over 4 years between last 2, but only about 7 years overall) My father died of Leukemia at 36 and left a widow with 4 kids 10 or under much like what happened with Richard's family. Did Richard die of a disease, accident, or did he desert his family? In John Coffey's will signed on Mar 31, 1774 he refers to his daughter as Betty Coffey. If Thomas Fields was the oldest in his family born 5 months after Richard married Elizabeth then he would be only 16 at that time. He must have married before he was 16 years old. Elizabeth (Betty) Coffey is estimated to have been born in 1749 I heard once. Did she in her mid-20's marry a 16 year old boy? Or was the estimate of her birth wrong? Is there a different estimated death, or known date for Betty Coffey's birth? My cousin Ted Morgan researched Thomas Fields, Esq of Wilkes County, NC thoroughly. He has a copy of the will signed in 1807 by Thomas Fields. He has the children listed as Jane who married ____Crumpton, William, Reuben or Reubin, Winifred who married John Humphrey, Polly who married William Humphrey, Sally who married _______Penley. All of these names relate back to someone in the Coffey family. Polly and Sally were actually in-laws. Benjamin married Polly Hayes, Thomas married Sarah (Sally) Fields and Reuben married Sarah (Sally) Scott. I saw another list that listed a James Crumpton in place of Jane. Either way Jane was Betty's mother, James was Betty's brother. It was still a name from the Coffey family. I noticed that no one in the family was named John. Could it be that Thomas disliked his stepfather so much that he would not allow Betty to name one of their children John even though that was the name of her father also? Could that also be the reason he married so young? I guess these are just rhetorical questions, not expecting an answer. No one probably knows. But I do tend to consider a lot of possibilities. It's my nature. In the book, Virginia Wills and Administrations I noticed a will (1667 w.) for Richard Field in Northumberland County. Could this man have been related to Richard Fields of Albemarle County? Maybe a grandfather? I am sure the records of Virginia have been checked and double checked by researchers already. Randall from Georgia :-) ******** Also From: R.W. Fields, RWFields@aol.com To: Majie Alley, majiea@earthlink.net Thanks for the additional information about Thomas FIELDS and family. It helped immensely. I desperately wanted to find his parents and siblings. Too bad about those courthouse records. One difference I have in my records is the married name of Winefred Coffey. The will copy I have in my possession definitely says MORAN instead of MORIN. I double checked it after reading your e-mail. At present the thing I am most interested in is finding the names of siblings of certain ancestors and the descendants of siblings of ancestors. I am sending you a copy of the outline descendant tree starting with Richard FIELDS. I will send you more later.
