During his long convalescence, he served for a time as superintendent of the Bureau of Conscription in Richmond. On 12 February 1864, he was promoted to Major General and assigned to the command of General HOOD's old division of the 1st Corps. This he led with marked distinction through the remaining campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia, and was finally paroled at Appomattox Court House. General FIELD had a varied post-bellum career. He engaged in business for a time, was in the service of the Khedive of Egypt, was doorkeeper of the national House of Representatives, was a civil engineer in government employ, and was superintendent of the Hot Springs, Arkansas, reservation. FIELDS, Pvt Joseph and (2.) FIELDS, Pvt. Ruben. Although I would like to claim the (s) ending, I can't. The correct spelling is FIELD. Capt. Clark was a poor speller and sometimes added the (s) when recording in his daily diary. The correct spelling of Ruben is Reubin. They were the sons of Abraham FIELD of Culpeper Co. VA who later became a Kentuckian. Abraham was one of the Culpeper Co. Minute Men in Colonel John FIELD's Co. and he "petitioned the House of Burgesses for relief because of physical disability incurred from a wound he had received in the battle" (see footnote). The battle was the Battle of Point Pleasant also known as the Battle of Kanawha and Dunmore's War. Dunmore's War was named after Lord Dunmore, the last colonial governor of VA. Abraham was granted a pension of ten pounds yearly. Colonel John FIELD was the uncle of Abraham and was killed in this battle. After distinguished service in the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the FIELD brothers returned to Kentucky. Joseph died in 1807 about one year after his return. In 1808 Reubin married Mary Myrtle and he died Jan. 1823 at about age 47 or 48. Neither Joseph or Ruben left descendants. Meriwether Lewis, in his report to Secretary of War, Henry Dearborn, on 15 Jan 1807 described Joseph and Reubin as "Two of the most active and enterprising young men who accompanied us. It was their peculiar fate to have been engaged in all the most dangerous and difficult scenes of the voyage, in which they uniformly acquitted themselves with much honor." Note: The above information was taken from Genealogies of Kentucky Families, The Filson Club History Quarterly, pages 478-509. This is a history of "Joseph and Reubin FIELD, Kentucky Frontiersmen of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and Their Father Abraham" by Roy E. Appleman. ****** Cousin Sarah Sharpless (SarahS1924@aol.com) writes: Remember John MOSS -- 2nd husband of Sarah FIELD? [Sarah (ca1730-1800) was a d/o John FIELD, who d. 1789 Louisa Co., VA. Her first husband was William KIMBROUGH -MMLA] Have you done anything with their son, Nelson MOSS? I ran across a book of estate settlements of Wilkes Co., GA. It had John MOSS, who apparently had a dau. who married Daniel H. STANDARD. John MOSS d. in 1846. Then the book had Daniel STANDARD, d. 1852 -- wife Ann. Witness was Kimbro S. TURNER. So I hauled out Davidson's big book on Wilkes Co. She shows a Kimbro STANDAW as being in the Wilkes Co. will book 1819-1836. Then, in Vol. 2, there's an abstract of the will of Kimbro STANDARD (probated 1834) who names son, Daniel STANDARD. Then, in the marriage section, it shows a Daniel STANDARD m. Ann H. CASE ("Cox in original" -- I don't know what this means), 1828, Wilkes Co. Then there's an abstract of a will of John BLALOCK, d. 1795, who apparently lived in Surry Co., NC, at some point. Kimbro STANDARD presented a receipt for his legacy. And the Surry Co. business makes me think there might be some connection with Marmaduke KIMBROUGH and the TURNERs. Anyway, one thing I've discovered is that families do keep marrying each other over time...so whenever I run across a name that's even remotely familiar, I try to track it down (just in case). So I went into the Yates' "Computerized Ancestor" database on the Web and found one listing for Nelson MOSS -- most likely the same as the Nelson who was the son of Sarah (FIELD) KIMBROUGH MOSS.
