Source: FIELD GENEALOGY, Frederick Clifton Pierce pg. 949 and 1101 - 1138 ******(Continued in next issue)****** *********** Early Field and Related Families Of St. Marks Parish, Culpeper County, Virginia From: GENEALOGICAL AND HISTORICAL NOTES ON CULPEPER COUNTY, VIRGINIA, by Dr. Philip Slaughter (1900) The Fields Family The first person of the name in the parish register is Henry FIELD, Sr. a member of the first vestry chosen by the freeholders and housekeepers of St. Mark's Parish, at Germanna. in January 1731. The next is Abraham FIELD, elected vestryman at the Great Fork Church in 1744, and served till his death in 1774, a term of thirty years. He had a son John, who represented Culpeper in the House of Burgesses in 1765. He was probably the Col. John FIELD who had served in Braddock's War, and who fell, fighting gallantly at the head of his regiment, at the Battle of Point Pleasant. One of his daughters married Lawrence SLAUGHTER, an officer of the Revolution, and who was the father of John Field SLAUGHTER, who married Miss ALEXANDER, of Prince William. Another of Col. John FIELD'S daughters married Col. George SLAUGHTER, who raised one of the first companies of minute-men in Culpeper, and after the war moved to Kentucky with George Rogers CLARK(E), commanded a fort at the Falls of the Ohio, and was one of the founders of the city of Louisville, which was then in the state of Virginia. Henry FIELD, Sr., the vestryman of 1731, served in that office and as churchwarden till 1762, a term of thirty-one years. He executed many commissions for the vestry such as going to Williamsburg on horseback several time on their behalf, and paying quitrents for the churches and glebes. He and Francis SLAUGHTER and Robert GREEN chose a site for a chapel between Shaw's Mountain, the Devil's Run and Hazel River. He was succeeded in the vestry by Henry FIELD, Jr. who served till his removal from the parish of St. Mark's into Bromfield Parish. Henry FIELD, Jr. died in 1785, leaving six sons - Daniel, George, Joseph, Thomas and John who were the ancestors of the families of that name. The late Judge of this Court, Richard H. FIELD, and his brothers Yancey and Stanton, were sons of Daniel FIELD of what is now Madison. He (Richard H. FIELD) married (first) Matilda, daughter of Robert SLAUGHTER of the Grange, and second Phillippa, daughter of the Hon. Phillip P. BARBOUR. His three (sic) sons were killed in battle during the late war [Civil War], and his daughter (Mrs. NORVELL) is the only surviving child. ------------ At the outbreak of the Civil War, the sons of Judge Richard H. FIELD, were students at the University of Virginia, when they joined the Culpeper Minute Men, 3rd VA Infantry, Confederate Army. The elder, William, age 22 or 23 years old was tall and well developed, with a bright and cherry disposition. The younger, Philip was tall and slender, with a delicate face, but with a shade of sadness which added to the attractiveness of his face. They were discharged in 1862, but rejoined the Army. Shortly afterwards they were killed, which broke their father's heart, and led to his early death. ----------- General James FIELD of the Culpeper bar, who lost a limb at the Battle of Slaughter's Mountain, is a son of Yancey FIELD. He married Miss COWHERD of Orange, Virginia. ---------- The Slaughter Family [Author, Philip Slaughter notes that the SLAUGHTER genealogy, had been revised - the work being done in April 1900 - by members of the family who were in a position to know. He limits his notice to two brothers, [A] Robert SLAUGHTER and [B] Francis SLAUGHTER who were transplanted in this Parish early in the eighteenth century, and by later research, were found to be the sons of Robert SLAUGHTER and Frances Ann JONES his wife. [A] Robert and [B] Francis SLAUGHTER were the first church wardens of St. Mark's Parish, chosen by the vestry in 1731. [A] Robert SLAUGHTER married 1723, Mary SMITH, dau. of Augustine SMITH, and had issue: 1. Robert Slaughter, married 1750, Susannah HARRISON. 2. William Slaughter, married Miss ZIMMERMAN and removed to Jefferson County, Kentucky. 3. Thomas Slaughter married Miss THORNTON. 4. Francis Slaughter married Miss LUGGETT. 5. James Slaughter married Susan CLAYTON. 6. Lawrence Slaughter married Miss FIELD, dau. of Col. John FIELD. 7. George Slaughter married Miss FIELD, dau. of Col. John FIELD. 8. Elizabeth Slaughter married __LIGHTFOOT. 9. Martha Slaughter married: (1) Gabriel JONES (2) William BROADDUS. [Note: Another part of Slaughter's book, says: Lawrence SLAUGHTER son of Robert; married Susanna FIELD, dau. of (Col.) John FIELD.] ---------- The Yancey Family The first trace of this family is four Welshmen, Charles, William, Joel, and Robert YANCEY, who came to Virginia in 1642. >From one of the original four was descended Lewis Davis YANCEY who settled in Culpeper County about 1710. He married Mildred KAVANAUGH, daughter of Charles KAVANAUGH of Irish parentage. They had nine children, of whom one of their sons, Richard Yancey, married ___, and had four children. One of Richard's daughters, Judith Yancey married Daniel FIELD. Another son of Lewis Davis and Mildred, Charles YANCEY, married POWERS, of whom one son, Thomas YANCY, married Sarah MITCHELL. One of Thomas and Sarah's daughters, Elizabeth YANCEY, married William WIGGINTON, and one of their children, Edmonia WIGGINTON married Henry FIELD. ------------ The Hill Family The first of the Hill family in Culpeper County, Virginia were two brothers, (A) Rusell HILL and (B) Needless HILL. (A) Rusell HILL married Miss TOWLES and had issue: (I) Harry, (2) William and (3) Fannie. (I) Harry HILL, son of (A) Russell HILL, married Miss POWELL, having eight children. One of his daughters, Fannie HILL, married Henry FlELD. -------------- Culpeper County in the Civil War: Little Fork Rangers Company D., 4th VA Calvary. STUART's Brigade: Pvt. Charles Daniel FIELD. I am sure this is a last name used as a first. I just can't find the connection. The Pardue family, too, immigrated to early Virginia. I was wondering if perhaps someone in your group had either a Pardue or Adams connection. Fields Pardue was born from the union of John Pardue and Sarah Adams. He also had brothers Adams, Morris, Liliston and Joel. Thanks..
