John Fields was born on April 2, 1752 in Hanover County, Virginia. He was the son of Nathaniel and Mary Fields, and he and his father both served in the Revolution. Mary Gibson Fields was the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Gibson, of Rockingham County, North Carolina. I've found records of a Joseph Gibson in the Revolution, but have not been able to prove that he was the same Joseph Gibson. My laptop, where all such email was kept, is very sick! Thanks, Sam. ************ Query: I'm not sure if I'm a Fields family researcher or not quite yet. Possibly your group could tell me whether I should be. As you probably know, research in the Scott/Russell Co, VA area is a challenge. It seems as though verbal family history is accepted as fact, even when there is no proof, or existing documents indicate otherwise. At least this appears to be the case with my Gillum family. My gr-gr-grandfather was James Gillum, he was born 1795 in Buckingham Co, VA. The family moved to the area that is now Scott Co, VA around 1800. According to verbal family history, James married Agnes Casteel in 1815 in Scott Co, VA. According to other Gillum researchers there is documentation for this; however, it's not recorded in Scott County records. Agnes' father is thought to have been Joseph Casteel by most other Gilliam researchers despite an 1833 Scott Co, VA deed that seems to say Agnes was an heir of Samuel Casteel. But, this difference of opinion concerning Agnes Casteel's parents is understandable due to the poor copy of the deed and some unusual phrasing in that deed. But I recently found a copy of an earlier deed in 1831 that says "James Gilland, and Agnes his wife, who was Agnes Casteel, wife and widow of Samuel Casteel." This explains the unusual phrasing in the 1833 deed, but raises the question as to Agnes' maiden name. In the Scott Co, VA death records there is; "Aggy Casteel, age 90, died in 1866. She was the daughter of William and Sarah Fields, wife of Joseph Casteel. This was reported by her son William Casteel." James Gillum's 1st wife, Agnes Casteel, was born about 1795 so the age is right. But what about the name of her spouse, Joseph Casteel? If this is the same woman, her son William was born around 1814; Agnes married James Gillum in 1815, so William was an infant at the time of his father's death. He apparently was raised by Agnes and her second husband, James Gillum. The 1820 Scott Co, VA census lists James Gillum - 400100-21010; this would be four children by Agnes' first marriage and three by her second marriage. As we continue on, James Gillum apparently deserted Agnes sometime between the time of the 1850 census and 1853 when he married Charity Bogges in Carter Co, KY. This would explain why she reverted to the Casteel name. I have heard various reasons for his departure, but this note is too long already. It seems to me that it would be entirely possible that the Aggy Casteel that died in 1866 was the same woman who was married to James Gillum. The 1831 deed not only says that Agnes was the widow of Samuel Casteel, it also says that Samuel inherited that land from his father Joseph Casteel. William Casteel, her son, may have just confused the names of his father and grandfather. He never knew either. So........... I think James Gillum's wife Agnes may have been the daughter of William and Sarah Fields, but I would like to know for sure before I accept it as fact. It would seem likely that with 60 of you researching the FIELD/FIELDS/FEILD lines in Virginia, possibly someone could answer the question: Was Aggy Fields, daughter of William and Sarah Fields, the same Agnes that married 1st Samuel Casteel and 2nd James Gillum? If I am able to definitely connect to the Fields family I will certainly join your group. Dave Dollard
