FIELDS in the "History of Greenup County, Kentucky" 7. Queries ****** Finding the forebears of John Field (d. 1789 Louisa Co.) has been frustrating for many researchers for a long time. FCO is a good example of the blank wall encountered when looking for John's antecedents. Although he only had five known children, over one quarter of our members descend from John. Professional genealogist Edward Sprague Jones of New York City provided Cousin Matt Madigan with the following information, which he had compiled as a possible lineage for John Field. It is interesting and includes much valuable information. We offer it as a direct quote from Mr. Jones below, with the following caveats: 1. Jones has not accounted for the generation between John Field (d. 1789) and John FAIL. 2. We have done further investigation into some of the people included and have found the following regarding John Fail: a. One John FAILE was on the Apr 1705 Henrico Co. Quit Rent Rolls with 240 acres. He was probably the same man as John Fail, and therefore possessed of a larger estate than Jones realized. b."15 Aug 1659 John FAILEY of Cornwall, yeoman, bound to Elizabeth Britton to serve 4 years in VA." [_Complete Book of Emigrants_ p. 432] If John Faile was John Failey, the line falls apart rather quickly. 3. Jones makes an interesting argument re John's wife's perhaps having been a GREEN. Another possibility, given the names of four of his children (Bartlett, Robert, Mary, and Sarah), is that she was an ANDERSON. According to _The Vestry Book of St. Paul's Parish, Hanover County, Virginia, 1706-1786_, Bartelot [sic] Anderson was chosen/elected a member of the vestry of St. Paul's Hanover in 1743. Mary Anderson was a member, as were Robert and Sarah Anderson. ------ "Field 20/7/91 p.2 E.S.J. 29/12/1637 New Norfolk Co.,Va. Daniel Gookin's patent for transporting persons ...Thomas Feild. They lived in Batesville. Sarah Wood was the daughter of Jesse Wood Sr. and Mildred Atkins, (widow of Reubin Terrell), Jesse Wood Sr. was probably the 5th son of William Wood, who arrived in Albemarle Co. in 1760. Four of Robert Field's children married children of Jesse Wood Sr. 1797 Albemarle Co. Robert Field Sr. to John Field 30 acres gift. This was the beginning of John Field's Batesville property. He was literate and kept a public house. 1798 Batesville, Albemarle Co. Sally Moss Field born, the first of 14 children born to Sarah and John Field. Her first name came from her mother. "His estate was extremely large for such an early date. It was an enormous file...The estate was, (sic, wasn't) entirely settled until the 1860s." -/10/1839 Versailles, Morgan Co., Mo. Subsequently, Sally and her daughter Lucy Jane McCord moved to live with their Field relatives in Cooper and Saline Cos., Mo. 3/5/ 1842 Saline Co.,Mo. Lucy Jane McCord married Abram Nave. -/-/1852 Savannah; Andrew Co:, Mo. Sally Moss Field McCord died. Her son James and Abram Nave were partners in the firm of Nave and McCord in Savannah. Comments: Tithe, tithable: the tithe in Virginia was a head tax paid in tobacco once a year to support the parish church building, the clergyman and parish clerk and the poor of the parish. The tithable white male or free black man was taxed on himself, white males 16 to 60 and slaves. Like the similar poll on North Carolina, the tithe was a tax on the means of production and not a tax on acreage. The price of tobacco fluctuated, so the parish's disposable income also fluctuated. The funds were administered by the wardens and vestry, who generally had to be adherents of the established Church of England. Opposition to the tithe came from Presbyterians, Baptists, Quakers, Lutherans, Borderers, in sum all who were not Anglicans. Field and Green: 5/6/1755 Culpepper Co., Va. Robert Green, son of Robert Green dec'd of Orange Co., Va., sold some property that had belonged to his father. John Field was a beneficiary from the sale. That fact points to who John Field's wife was. Her name is on no document found. John Field's sharing in the proceeds of the sale indicates that she was an unamed daughter of Robert Green, Sr. The older Robert Green was born in England in 1695. He was a contemporary of John Field, but there the similarity ends. In 1710 Robert Green, Gent. came to Virginia with his mother's brother Sir William Duff. They settled on the James River, which flows through Henrico and Hanover Cos. where the Fields lived. In 1732, Sir William Duff, Joist Hite, Robert MacKay and Robert Green obtained a patent for 120,000 acres in the Valley of Virginia, the first grant in that region. Then Sir William Duff returned to Scotland where he died childless and willed his portion of the patent to Robert Green; his nephew, Robert Green, lived near Brandy Station and was variously a militia Captain, vestryman, (1731), of St. Mark's Parish, Culpepper Co. and Burgess, (1736). 22 Feb., 1748, Orange Co.,Va. will written, proved 28/7/1748 Robert Green. The will mentions his wife and seven sons, five of whom were minors. Robert Qreen, Jr. was one of the two sons who had reached his majority. The will mentions no daughters. All seven Green sons were over six feet tall, had red hair and were called "The Red Greens of Culpepper" to distinguish them from the "White Greens" and from a third Green family in the county. The three Green families are well catalogued. Neither Robert Green, Jr., his brothers nor their children had any connection with any Field. Yet seven and one third years after Robert Green, Sr. died, John Field, a small farmer, shared in the proceeds of land sold that had belonged to that Robert Green. Years earlier, in James More's property sale, the Field interest in the sale was the wife's dower rights. In 1755 the interest in the sale was also from the wife, but with a difference. A daughter of Robert Green Sr. by his wife would have made a very suitable marriage among the gentry families. The gentry are defined as owning 750-1000 acres. John Field with 120, later 200 acres, was a small farmer. John is posited as Robert Green's daughter, possibly his oldest child and not by his wife. If Mrs. Field was not the child of Robert Green's wife, she had no legal right to anything of or from her father, except what he chose to give her. In Colonial Virginia, a child born out of wedlock was taken from the mother by the parish vestry and placed to be raised with a family. That was the law, but the published vestry records indicate that the procedure was enforced among the less affluent. In 1783, John Field owned 5 slaves, more than might be expected on 200 acres. That, however, does not prove anything. Garbled and unsubstantiated Field family lore purports that Robert Field of Albemarle's 11th and last child was Green B. Field. Proveably, no one in the Field family was named Robert until John named his son Robert, and he had three grandsons named Robert. The 1755 sale was a sign of acceptance of responsibility of a father's paternity. Field Estate values: in 1702, John Field, carpenter left an estate valued at 4450 lbs. of tobacco. on l/3/1712, John Fail's estate was valued at L34.11.3. Comparing the relative value of the two estates is roughly possible. "In the 18th century, one man could produce about 1500 to 2500 pounds of tobacco per year. Ten shillings per hundred pounds of tobacco for Maryland, [Virginia was the same.] appears in the inventories frequently during this decade, [1690-1699], as a formula for transforming tobacco into sterling value." Footnote p.349 Aubrey C. Land in Stanley Katz edit. _Colonial America_ 1st edit. Boston 1971 and p.4l7 David Alan Williams, ibid. 3rd Edit. N.Y. 1983. By the 10s per hundredweight formula, the 1702 estate was worth L22 as against the 1712 estate's value of L34.11.3. Had the Fields been farmers, these valuations would have placed them in the lower 20 percent of Virginia's economy. The majority of white males in that economy owned no property whatsoever. The Fields were carpenters. For a craftsman, say a blacksmith, to equip himself to practice his trade, the cost of tools has been estimated at 1.5 to L20. John Field's carpenter's tools could have amounted to 20 percent of his estate. Neither Henry's nor John's estates showed ownership of slaves. ["Henry's" must be a typo--MMLA] When John Fail, (Field), carpenter, died in 1712, like his father, he left a modest estate. The next John moved to the new lands in the Shenandoah and owned slaves, the means of production. That John's grandson Capt. John Field had amassed a very considerable estate before he died in Cooper Co., Mo. in 1833. He was born in Virgina August 16, 1846 and came to Greenup County in 1873. His parents were Jonas and Agnes Gilman Fields and he married Nancy J. Foster in 1866. >From _The Russell Times_ newspaper, Vol. 3, No. 42, Friday March 8, 1935: BABY IS BITTEN BY POISONOUS SNAKE: James Roy. 2, son of Mr. and Mrs. Willard Fields of Truitt, Kentucky, was bitten on the left ancle last Saturday by a Copperhead snake while he was playing in the backyard of his home, the child was taken to Portsmouth and the wound was anticeptized and serum was administered to counteract the posion of the snake. When the child reached Portsmouth, his leg was swollen twice its natural size and he was in a serious condition. The swelling started reducing as soon as the serum was administered. Portsmouth is in Ohio about 20 miles from the Russell Kentucky area. I have no idea where Truitt is. My Wife and I excerpted the Russell times newspapers of all the genealogy related articles for the 1934 - 35 years. This was the only Field article in them. I just think that stories like this are so nice to have if that were your line. We have some like this for our Genealogy. Thanks again for the FCO postings, I have them combined into one file and it is on my and my wife's computers. Waiting for 7, 8 and 9 to complete the set. Is it ok to distribute this to any other Field researcher? Found another one, this is from _The Big Sandy News_ 1908: Last Saturday on the Cannonsburg Road, not far from Cattletsburg, John Price of Ashland shot and dangerously wounded Edward Field, Field is a brother of Mayor Field of Cattletsburg. Booze on the part of Price. ****** QUERIES: Cousin Matt asks: Has any one worked on the children of Robert Field's (ca1732-1824) first wife? The abstract I have seen of Robert's will mentions that he was not leaving much to these girls (a couple of slaves) because they received a share of the estate of his first wife. The question becomes: What was this share? Was it a dower that she brought into the marriage - cash, cattle, slaves? Or was it land that was given to her by her father? If it was land, has anybody searched the deeds of the appropiate county to see if a Yancey, Mills or Garland sold land that can be tied into the family? I checked Louisa county last night and came up empty. ****** Cousin Majie asks: Has anyone ever found any proof that Robert's second wife's (Sarah) maiden name was GREEN? I have been unable to find any source other than Pierce's _Field Genealogy_ for that assertion. ****** Our earliest Fields - William and Jedida, born in NC, moved to Hawkins Co. TN, had 6 sons, one daughter all born in TN. They all moved to Indiana about 1835. One of the boys married a Fields, Alzira. (Henderson Fields) the names were: Elizabeth William Henderson Dempsey Russell Jackson----b 1815, m. Phoebe Collins (this one is our line) Ellison They were born between 1803 and 1820. Jackson and Ellison lived in KS for some time, Ellison descendants still there 20 years ago. Denise Fields dfields@magick.net ****** Hi! I have what might be more information on my Fields family. I was speaking with a distant cousin yesterday and she said that my James Fields had a brother who was an ambassador to Tejas, Mexico. He was also in the military (captain I think) and that he had married an Indian woman. He supposedly lived in Newton Co., TX. This would have been in the late 1800's. Does this ring a bell with you? Thanks. Shannon. Birdwell_Shannon/BLS_HOUSTON@bestlock.com ****** Has anyone run across Judith Fields who was named in her husband's (John Hanson) will in 1778 in Albemarle? If so, please contact Cousin Majie . She's trying to help a non-computer using researcher.
