Death at Newton Abbot of Mr. James Powell
Former Licensee
he death occured at "Mayfield," 2, Torquay Road, Newton Abbot, on February 22nd, of Mr. James Powell,
who was 65 years of age, and who many years ago was a prominent Rugby fottballer in Devon.  He played
forward for Devon in the year when the county first won the championship against Northumberland
at Newcastle.  He kicked the goal from the try (scored by Tommy Dunn, of Torquay) which won the match.  
Well known as "Ducky," Mr. Powell formerly played for the old Exeter Oakes, and later for Exeter R.F.C.  
Leaving Exeter to settle in Newton Abbot, he became licensee of the Jolly Sailor Inn, Newton
Abbot, and was very highly esteemed locally.  He retired from business some years ago.  Much sympathy
has been expressed with the widow and family. The funeral took place at Torquay Cemetery on Monday, the
Rev. Maxwell Carnson (superintendent Methodist minister, Newton Abbot) officiating.  The family mourners
were: Mrs. J. Powell (widow), Messrs. C. A. and G. Powell (sons), Miss A. Powell (daughter), Mr. [torn]
Powell (brother), Mrs. A. Pullman (sister), Mr. and Mrs. W. Atkins, Mr. A. Atkins, Mrs. M. Bishop, Mr. H.
Atkins, Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Metcalf, Mr. F. Pullman, Mrs. A. Powell, Mr. L. Bishop (brothers and
sisters-in-law), Harry, Roy and Raymond (grand-children).Friends present included Councillor A. Browning,
Messrs. T. Browning and R. Rowe (Exeter), N. Soper, Rider, C. Cross, A. H. Bullen, S. Blatchford, L. Cross,
and C. Weeks, and Miss L. Fixture.
The beautiful floral tributes were from the following: - "In sweet remembrance,' from wife and family; Alice;

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. W. Gaye, Albany Street, Newton Abbot.
