Mary Z. Parker Stokes
Mary S. Parker Stokes born in Saugamon Co., Ill., March 8, 1830 departed from this life January 30, 1924 at
the age of 93 years, 10 months and 22 days. She was married to Benjamin F. Stokes, October 25th, 1847.
To this union was born 13 children, nine of whom are living: Rebecca A. Cross, Callao; Titha E. Brown,
Laura L. King, John F., Ben R., Nora H. Stokes of Excello; James H. Stokes, Mollie Glenn and Susan M.
Kennedy of Macon.
Those departed from this life are Barton P. Stokes, died March 24, 1864; Chas. P. Stokes, died August 16,
1901; Iro Jane Lamb, died December 7, 1906; Thomas W. Stokes, died June 8, 1923; and her husband died
July 6, 1904. She also reared two grand-children, Dr. J. B. Stokes of Macon and Russell K. Stokes of Excello.
She also leaves to mourn their loss nineteen grand children and thirty-six great grand children, a host of
neighbors and friends as she had lived on the same farm seventy years. She with her husband were united
with the church at Jacksonville, Mo., in 1856, being a faithful member sixty-eight years until death the
unvailing of the eyes, to be with him Eternal.
Oh sleep: beloved Mother, your chair by the fireside is vacant, from your
children thy praises will be given, Tender voices we hear once more, smiling
eyes and waving hand, knowing by each beckoning sign that some day we'll
clasp loving hands, and walk our little way; and know that we are not astray.

James H. Stokes Passes Away
Vice-President of First Band and Trust Company Dies At Home Near Excello
James H. Stokes, vice-president of the First Bank and Trust Company, passed away at 4:50 o'clock Sunday
morning at his home near Excello. Mr. Stokes had been ill for several months, and was bedfast for the past
ten weeks.He was born August 27, 1865 in Hancock County, Illinois, the son of Benjamin F. and Mary Z.
Parker Stokes.
Mr. Stokes was an experienced business man as well as a farmer. In 1885 he came to Macon as a clerk and
after five years went to work in the same capacity for the Central Coal and Coke Company at Ardmore.
Later he was transferred to Mineral, Kansas.
December 15, 1898 he was married to Lulu M. Holstine. In 1900 Mr. and Mrs. Stokes moved to Cowgill,
Missouri where he was engaged in the mercantile business. Since 1906, when he bought a general
merchandise store at Jacksonville they have lived in this sections of Missouri.
They came to Macon in 1922 when Mr. Stokes became manager of the Farmer's Exchange. He resigned this
position in 1925.
Besides his wife Mr. Stokes is survived by a son, Parker; three sisters, Miss Nora Stokes, Mrs. Minnie
Kennedy, and Mrs. J. J. King, one brother, John F. Stokes and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at Mount Salem Church, conducted by the
Rev. J. L. Shoemaker, pastor of First Christian Church, and Masonic Lodge of Jacksonville.
The First Bank and Trust Company will be closed Tuesday in respect to Mr. Stokes who has served the
institution most efficiently and loyally.

James Stokes, Former Moberly Resident, Dies
James Stokes, former resident of Moberly, died at his home, north of Excello, at 5 o'clock yesterday
morning. He had been ill for eleven months and bedfast for the past three months.
Mr. Stokes lived in Moberly for a number of years, residing at 932 West Rollins street. From here he went to
Macon, where he managed the Farmer's Exchange about six years and then moved to the farm at Excello.
He was prominent in Macon civic activities and for the past two and one-half years had been vice-president
of the First Bank and Trust Company at Macon. He is survived by his widow; one son, Parker Stokes, of the
home; a brother, John Stokes, near Excello; and three sisters, Miss Nora Stokes of the home,
Mrs. John J. King of Excello and Mrs. Minnie Kennedy of Macon. A number of nieces and nephews and other
relatives also survive. Mrs. Pearl Vaughn, 920 South Williams, and Mrs. G. A. Smith, 500 West Logan, were
nieces, and Tom Parker, 526 Fisk, is a cousin.
Funeral services will be conducted at Mt. Salem church, south of Excello, at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon.
Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.

Mrs. Minnie Kennedy Dies Early This Morning
Mrs. Susan Minerva (Minnie) Kennedy, a daughter of the late Benjamin F. and Mary Z. Stokes, of the Excello
community, passed away suddenly this morning between 5:00 and 6:00 o'clock at the Oscar Neel home on
Bourke Street, where she had been rooming for several months. Mrs. Kennedy was 63 years old, last June.
Her death was attributed to coronary occlusion.She was born on the Stokes farm, near Excello, and has
lived practically her entire life in and near home, with the exception of a few years when she lived in
Moberly.
For the last fifteen years Mrs. Kennedy has been employed as saleslady in numerous business stores in
Macon, and has made a wide circle of friends, numbered by her acquaintances. For the past number of
years she has been employed at the New York Store.
Those who survive to mourn their loss are two sisters, Miss Nora Stokes of the home; Mrs. John J. King of
near Excello and one brother, J. F. Stokes, of north of Excello, besides a large number of nieces and
nephews. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Mt. Salem church and
burial, will be made in the nearby cemetery.The body will lie in state this afternoon until 3:30 o'clock at the
Stephens & Goodding Funeral Home, after which if will be removed to the Stokes home, north of Excello,
and will remain there until Tuesday afternoon.

community, passed away suddenly about 5:40 a.m. at the Oscar Neel home in Macon, March 18, 1939,
where she had been rooming for some time.
She was born June 10, 1876, on the Stokes farm just north of Excello. Her age at death was 62 years, 9
months and 8 days. She had lived practically her entire life in and near home.
A father, mother, five brothers and four sisters have preceded her in death, and those who survive to
mourn her loss are two sisters, Miss Nora Stokes of the home, Mrs. John J. King, and one brother, John F.
Stokes, all of the Excello community, besides a large number of nieces and nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Mt. Salem Church with burial in the cemetery there.
