[news article] "Jim" Barrows "Missing in Action"
First of the students of Meadville High School to be reported missing in action is James
Arden Barrows, known to his fellow-students as "Jim."Last year, Jim left school to enlist
in the U.S. Navy in order to serve his country in this time of war. Since he had been a
small boy, it had been his ambition to join the Navy and when the time came that hi
knew he was needed to serve, he immediately volunteered. Since his enlistment last
March, he had crossed the Atlantic to the British isles and had been promoted to
Seaman, First Class and first class gunner.News of the tragedy was received by his
mother, Mrs. Grace Barrows of 637 Madison Avenue, in the form of a telegram from
Washington, sent by Rear Admiral Randall Jacobs, chief of naval personnel, U.S.N.
Jim was popular among his fellow-students and will be greatly missed. Deepest
sympathy is extended to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Barrows, and to his sisters,
Mrs. Eleanor Stainbrook of Youngstown, and Miss June Barrows, both of whom attended
Meadville High School.Room 69, Jim's home room is getting a service flag in memory of
him. [Mead High News Oct 23-1942]

Dear Grace -
I find I was a little mistaken in what I told you Thurs. eve. Instead of Polly Smith being
our great-great grandmother, she was our great grandmother. You may know that quite a
number of years ago Elbert Smith published a history of the Smith and Byham Families,
and Wallace has one of them, and several years ago when Aunt Milia lived at Saegertown
I was looking at it, but didn't have sense enough to write down some of the things, and
the only thing I did write down was "My great grandmother, Polly Smith, was born at
Ware, Mass. May 26, 1799." I wish I had one of those books. I think Elbert might have
given me one. Delma helped him in supplying the Byham history and she wrote me to
give her our Byham side of the family.
Some Weather we are having yesterday and today. I hope it won't continue
long.
Yours as ever- Mary Fitch

Crash near Greenville.
Barrows met instant death when the car he was driving struck a tree on the
Greenville-meadville road a short distance from Greenville. Miss Norton died at the
Greenville hospital at 5:40 o'clock yesterday afternoon.
The accident occurred just over the county line after the auto, a Ford sedan, had rounded
a slight curve. In some manner the auto went off the road and crashed into the tree.
Barrows was pinned back of the wheel and it was some time before his body could be
taken from the wreckage. Miss Norton also was pinned between the cowling and the seat.
The occupants of the rear seat, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Stainbrook, 726½ Baldwin Street, were
thrown clear of the car. Mrs. Stainbrook, sister of Barrows, was the least injured and after
remaining in the Greenville Hospital for a few hours she was discharged.
Mrs. Stainbrook's husband also was removed to Meadville and is a patient at City
Hospital. His injuries consist of a fractured arm, severe head lacerations, possible
internal injuries and there also is the possibility that he might have a slight skull fracture.
Two highway patrolmen from the Greenville sub-station, W. E. Stoops and P. I. Gourley
and Patrolman F. J. Walters and John Witherspoon, of the Meadville Barracks
investigated. They were assisted by Deputy Coroner Arthur E. Byham, of this city. It has
not yet been decided whether and inquest will be held.
When the auto struck the tree, Mr. and Mrs. Stainbrook, said to have been sleeping in
the rear seat, were thrown clear of the machine. It was said that the impact nearly tore
the car in two. It was brought to a local garage yesterday and attracted considerable
attention. Many who viewed it said it was one of the most badly wrecked autos that they

Sisters Lose Lives
The five members of the Conroe family and Wareham figured in an accident near
Cambridge Springs early last night. The younger girl was killed instantly; her sister died a
short time alter at the Wasson Hospital, Cambridge Springs.
The six persons were riding in an auto driven by Luther Conroe last night when it went
out of control on a Pinchot road, six miles from Cambridge Springs. The vehicle turned
over several times and of the occupants were thrown from the machine.
The accident occurred near the Willis farm, on what is known as the Greytown road.
According to Deputy Coroner Arthur E. Byham, who with Highway Patrolman John
Witherspoon, is conducting the investigation, the machine skidded 625 feet along the
bank, turning over several times on its tragic path.
Ambulances from Cambridge Springs took the victims to hospitals at that place. All of
those hurt, except Wareham, were taken to the Wasson Hospital. Wareham is a patient
at the Mullen Hospital.
Both of the sisters who sustained fatal injuries died from hurts about the head and
chest. Their father is suffering from the same type of injuries and has not yet regained
consciousness.
Mrs. Conroe's physician sad that she had sustained chest injuries and "terribly lacerated"
limbs. Wareham is said to be suffering mostly from shock although he has lacerations
and bruises.
Cambridge Springs residents, saddened by the shock of the tragedy, recalled last night
that the Conroes were highly interested in their religious obligations. They were members
of the Presbyterian Church.
The two girls killed were students at Cambridge Springs High School. Miss Hazel was a
member of the senior class and would have graduated in June. Her sister was a freshman.
Both girls were members of the Girl Scouts, the Tri-Hi-YY club. They also sang in the
junior choir of the Presbyterian Church.
The driver of the car, Luther Conroe, is an employee of the Hookless Fastener company.
Wareham, a close friend of the family, also is employed at the Hookless.
All but one of the children of the Conroe family were in the auto when it crashed. The
absent member of the family was Clarence Conroe, Jr. He is married, an employee of the
Hookless here, and his wife is at present acting as secretary of Cambridge Springs
borough.
Accident on Lake Raod.

about four mile west of Meadville about 2 A.M. Sunday.A westbound car said operated by
Edwin R. Chantler, of Pine Street, Harmonsburg, who was accompanied by his wife, went
off the road and halted atop a guardrail at the edge of a gully.
The other car, westbound, said operated by William F. Tamplin, a student of Allegheny
College, went down an embankment and into a field. Three other Allegheny students,
Miss Hazel Dixon, Miss Mary Agnes Miller and Tom Jones, were passengers.
The only occupant of either machine to be hurt was Mrs. Chantler, who was taken to
Spencer Hospital suffering head injuries.Patrolmen John Witherspoon and F. J. Walters,
of the Meadville barracks of the state highway patrol, went to the scene of the accidents.
The wrecked cars involved were towed to a Meadville garage.

George S. Smith, 70, of R.D. 1 Guys Mills, was badly hurt Sunday night when the
automobile in which he was riding left the raod and overturned on Hogue's hill near
Wayland.
The accident occurred about 6:30 P.M. and although corporal C H. Blocker, of the
Meadville barracks of the state highway patrol, arrived there shortly thereafter, the

[Letter from E. M. Wilder, M.D., Nicolaus Building, 1020 Eighth Street,
Sacramento, Calif.
Oct. 1 -'47
Mrs. Grace D. Barrows -
Meadville - Pa.
My Dear Mrs. Barrows:- The enclosed sheets show what I am doing. But when I come to
your ancestor Thomas Wilder - I am stopped in connecting his twig of the family tree
onto the main stem because -tho I know that Thomas came from Oneida Co. N.Y. to
Meadville I don't know whether he was born in Oneida Co, or elsewhere in New York - or
whether he came from New England of who were his parents, whereever he was born.
Can you throw any light on this?
For several years I had a partial record of the descendants of Thomas, but there are
many gaps which possibly you can help me with. The descendants of Calvin I have pretty
well worked out - so we can omit them.
Sylvester Wilder - I understand he never married, When and where did he die and his
occupation?
Eliza Wilder - place and date of her birth and death. I understand she did not marry.
Luther Wilder - I suppose you to be a daughter (or grand daughter) of his daughter -
Martha Wilder Dennington, so most of what I want to know is about your uncles - aunts
and cousins. You must know where the family Bible and other family records are to be
found. So I am going to list a number of questions. Please take all the time you want
and answer as many of them as you can.
What was the family name of Thoams Wilders second wife and when did he marry her?
Did he have any children by this marriage?
Name and date of birth, marriage and death of Luthers first wife?
What became of his son - Sylvester - by this first marriage?
Date and place of Luthers marriage to Sarah Byham? Date and place of her
birth and death? Name of her parents? Were all their children born in Crawford County?
Martin L. Wilder - when and where did he live and die? Whom did he marry?
He had one son - what was his name and what became of him?
Thomas J. Wilder - When and where did he die? What was his first wife name
_____Crouch. When and where did they marry and when and where was she
born and died?
Thomas J. when and where did he marry Sarah Moriison? Where did they live?
When and where did she die?
Chauncey G. Wilder - married 3 times. Who was the first wife and when and where
married. When and where did she die? Where did Chauncey live?
Cauncey's daughter Tessora - i have nothing but her date of birth. Did she marry and if
so when- where and to whom? Has she any descendants that I can write to?
Chaucncey's sons - John & Paul - I have nothing on them. Can you suggest how to
contact them of their children?
Who were Chaunceys second and third wives? Have you any idea what became of them>
died or divorced? etc.
[change of typewriter ink color]
How abot Lucy Maria Wild der Waid? I have only that she married Joseph Waid and had a
son Fred H. Waid - born in 1866. Not a date or place. Do you know whether Fred Waid is
still living - or any of his children to whom I can write?
Mary Ester Wilder - born Aug. 30-1844. a "spnster" where was she born and when and
where died?
[in pencil] Died at Gannite Falls On Dec 12th 1923 Barford Co
Sarah J -- I have her record pretty clearly thro the family of her son George
Sylvestor Wilder.
[in pencil] Mary Esther Wilder raised his son.
Elisha R. born March 3-1847. Married Martha Graham. Died of Typhoid. One child - Mary
Amy Wilder Michaels. Can you add anything to this? Do you know whether her son - F.
Wilder Michaels is still living? Where did Elisha R. livce and die?
[in pencil] R. D. Fountain Home Mead 1 son
Your Aunt Martha Wilder Dannington - I enclosed a records form such as I use for all
Wilders - which shows what little I have on her. Will you please add all you possibly can
to her sheet - including the back - which will show her children, even tho they died young?
Your Father - Jonas B. I enclose his record sheet. All I have is brief indeed.
Please help me with his complete record.
Please don't think that I am asking too much. You are the only living descendant of
Luther Wilder that I know of and I am very anxious to get all these family records down
in Black and White before I get too old to work at this hobby of mine - Im over 75 now.
Most sincerely yours

Sylvester Wilder disowned all of his step bro & sisters. So I know nothing about them
only I think he had several children raised at Norrisville. There was a Margaret who
married Will Hunter Postmaster of Meadville Pa. He is dead, but perhaps I can get you an
address of some of them & will send to you latter. Also- Their was a Daughter Addie
who married a Cotten. I wish I could help you more.
