Severyn Bruyn (1726-1759)
Holy Bible in Dutch, Dordrecht, Jacob en Hendrick Keur, 1741.
It contains the records of Severyn Bruyn and his descendants and has come down in
direct descent through Jacobus S. Bruyn, Severyn Bryun, and Mary Bruyn Forsyth to the
present owners, the Misses Katherine Bruyn Forsyth and Petronella Bruyn Forsyth of
Kingston, N. Y.[From Severyn Bruyn, the original owner, the book passed to his son
Jacobus Severyn, then to his son Severyn, and from him to his children, Augustus
Hasbrouck Bruyn and Mary Bruyn Forsyth, my mother. Katherine Bruyn Forsyth.]
Severyn Bruyn is born the 25" May (Old Stile) in the year of our Lord Christ seventeen
hundred and twenty six and has to Godfather and mother (To Witt) Cadwalader Colden
Esg'r and his wife.
Catharine Ten Broek, who is now my present wife, was born the 8th day of June (old
Stile) In the Year of our Lord Christ one thousand Seven hundred and Twenty Seven, and
has to her Godfather Cornelis Vernay and godmother Mary Delametter, wife of Johannes
Delametter Esq'r. In the year of our Lord Christ one thousand Seven hundred and
Forty-nine and fifty, on the thirteenth day of January (old Stile) In the 24" year of my
age, and Catharine Ten Broek in the 23rd year of her age, was bound in bonds of Holy
Matrimony by Parson Mancius.
My eldest Child Jacobus was born in the year of our Lord Christ One thousand Seven
hundred and fifty one. On Sunday morning about five of the Clock of the 27th day of
October (Old Stile) and was Baptized the same day in Kingston by Parsons Petrus Vass
and has to Godfather and mother Abraham Hasbrouck and his wife Catharine.
My second child Rachel was born in the year of our Lord Christ One thousand seven
hundred and fifty four on fryday about half an hour past four of the Clock, in the Morning
of the 24th day of May (New Stile) and was Baptized the Sunday following, by Parson
Petrus Vass, has to God-father and Godmother, Johannes Ten Broek and Geertry Ten
Broek.
My third Child Johannis was born in the year of our Lord Christ One thousand seven
hundred and fifty six, On Saturday Morning about five of the Clock of the 29th day of May
(New Stile) and Baptized the next day by Parson Whilhelmus Georgius mancius, has to
God father and Godmother Coenrad Ten Broeck and his wife Margariet.
My daughter Rachel dyed in the Lord the 15th November 1756 after a Severe illness of
Nine Days. She dyed about Eleven of the Clock of the said day it being on a Monday and
was Intered in the Church yard in Kingston near the Church opposite the North corner,
the Wednesday following.
Severyn Bruyn departed this Life the 19th Day of August 1759 Newstile. It being on
Sunday Morning fifteen Minutes after 12 o'clock In the Morning Aged 33 years 2 Months
and fourteen Days, And was Buryed on Munday following Upon the Church Yard at
Kingston, and Rests in the Lord untill his Coming to Judge both the Quick and the Dead.
He was about six feet high, well proportioned. Light blue eyes, Light brown Straight hair,
he was very Active in the Vigour of his Life. Was endowed with a Share of good Sense
and Agreeable companion. He dyed of what they Doctors called The Long Fever,
after an Illness of 15 Days. He was The Latter part of his Sickness very Delerious.
And his Son Johannis Departed This Life The 21st of August 1759 About 12 of the Clock
of the Day and Buryed near his Father. And Rests in the Lord until his Coming.
Kingston January 8th (New Stile) 1760 is my daughter Catharine born And christened by
Domine Whilhelmus Georgius Mancius, and has for Godfather and Mother Petrus Ten
Broeck and Catharine his wife.
Catharine Bruyn died in the year one thousand seven hundred and Seventy six on the

Jacobus S. Bruyn was married to Blandina Elmendorph Daughter of Petrus Edmundus
Elmendorph on Monday the eighteenthday of March in the Year of our Lord one thousand
seven hundred and eighty two by Parson doll.
My Eldest son Edmund was born on the 4th of April, one thousand seven hundred and
eighty three in the same year when Peace was Restored to America and was Baptized by
Parson Doll, and has for Godfather and Godmother Petrus Edmundus Elmendorph and
Mary and Elizabeth Elmendorph.
My Second son Severyn was born on good Fryday the 25th of March in the year of our Lord
one thousand seven hundred and eighty five, was baptized by Parson Doll and has for
Godfather and Godmother Lucas Elmendorph and Sally Elmendorph.
My mother Catherine (who was married after my father's death to Jonathan Elmendorph)
departed this life on the first day of November in the Year of our Lord one thousand
seven hundred and two aged seventy five years.
Col Jacobus S. Bruyn died 12th July 1825 N.S.
Blandina Bruyn, relict of Jacobus S. Bruyn died 25th January 1832 aged seventy eight
years, five months and seventeen days.
Edmund Bruyn died 5th March 1847 aftere suffering for than two years from an affection
of the throat, which terminated in a cancer, aged sixty three years, eleven months, and
one day.
Severyn Bruyn died October 27th 1856, aged 71 years seven months and two days. After
a sickness of about a fortnight he calmly and quietly departed this life in the faith and
hope of the gospel and in the full enjoyment of that peace of God which passeth all
understanding.
