FURTHER DETAILED INFORMATION

John Wesley Yancey (1840-1863) & Francis Asbury Yancey (1846-1864):

Info from Rebecca Suiter:
John Wesley Yancey (1840-1863) was killed in the Civil War at Big Black River, Mississippi, on June 22, 1863. He served with Co. K, 4th Regiment of the Iowa Volunteer Calvary. He would not accept duty as an officer since he was single and had no dependents. He figured other men who were married and had children needed the extra pay more than himself. He was buried at Flower Hill Chapel on Bird Song Ferry Road 15 miles east of Vicksburg on June 22, 1863. He said, "I would rather die and be buried by the side of my brother-in-law than to be whipped by the slave holders of the South." His brother-in-law Henry Clark Zickefoose had already died during the war. Francis Asbury Yancey (1846-1864) was killed June 26, 1864, accidentally while in the service of his county by a fall from a railroad car near Germantown, Tennessee. He was a member of Co. A in the 45th Regiment of the Iowa Infantry. He was 18 years old and had only been in the service a couple of months, and had yet to see battle action. They were both the sons of Ambrose Yancey (1818-1892) and Phebe Jane Goff (1822-1899) of Henry County, Iowa, and later Grenola, Kansas.

John H. Yancey (1834-20 Mar 1864) Died at Vicksburg.

See his Civil War letters.

Richard Yancey (1834-1898) Son of Richard Kelley Yancey & Elizabeth Smith

From Family records apparently citing original documents:
"On 20 July 1871 following information given Williamson Co., Illinois, in application for pension: Enlisted under name of Richard Yancey, in military service of United States, in Company G, 81st Reg, Illinois Volunteers at Williamson Co. on the 13th August 1862 and was honorably discharged 10 Sept 1863. Age 38 years, height 5'4, complexion fair, hair brown, eyes blue. Disease contracted in service left him almost totally blind. Has been in Williamson Co. since leaving service. Signed by "mark" only. Witnesses: R. D. Yancey and Joseph Yancey. "Certificate of Discharge" gives enlistment date as 17 Aug 1862 , age at time 29, other description as above, farmer at time. Gives discharge date as 9 Sep 1863. Letter from Adjutant General's Office dated 20 Nov 1871 gives "enrolled on the 7th day of August 1862 at Fredonia, Illinois" and "mustered into service as a private on the 26th day of August 1862" and "discharged on Surgeons certificate of disability at St. Louis, MO Sep 9 1863". "Declaration of a [widow?] for original pension" dated 20 March 1903 gives Telitha C. Scurlock (formerly Yancey) age 50 years, a resident of Hooper, County of Weber, state of Utah - "widow of Richard K. Yancey".

Declaration for children under sixteen years of age" dated 9 May 1903 gives date of marriage above as 19 Jan 1881 instead of 1882. "Declaration for rejected widows pension" dated 19 Feb 1917 gives Telitha's birth date as May 22 1853. Also gives marriage date to Yancey as Jan [????] 1883, under name of Telitha G. Alexander.

Thomas Yancey (1827-1892) son of Richard Kelley Yancey & Elizabeth Smith.

From Family records apparently citing original documents:
On November 11, 1861, Thomas joined the California Volunteers, and was mustered into service at Sacramento on Nov 23 1861. He was a private, Co. G 5th Reg California Volunteers. From that time until discharged on November 27 1864, he was stationed primarily in Arizona and New Mexico. Some of his duties included being out on Indian patrols, and records show he accompanied one wagon train into Mexico. While working in the food warehouse and lifting a quarter beef from an overhead hook, the log on which he was standing rolled from under him causing the beef to fall onto him and he was injured. In December of 1864, Thomas re-enlisted for a period of two years and in San Fransisco on December 31, 1866 he was discharged.

Wort Yancey (1847-????) Son of Charles Lewis Yancey and Jane Hancock
