CHAMPION DECATUR YANCEY

ANOTHER PIONEER CITIZEN OF COUNTY PASSES AWAY, MAY 30, 1924
THE SAD NEWS OF THE DEATH OF MR. C. D. YANCEY OF ELIASVILLE REACHED GRAHAM LATE FRIDAY AFTERNOON. HE HAD BEEN IN BAD HEALTH FOR SOME TIME AND HIS DEATH WAS NOT UNEXPECTED. AN UNUSUALLY LARGE CROWD WAS PRESENT AT THE FUNERAL IN ELIASVILLE, SUNDAY AFTERNOON. CONDUCTED BY BRO. WILSON, THE PASTOR OF THE ELIASVILLE BAPTIST CHURCH .. THE FLORAL OFFERINGS WERE VERY BEAUTIFUL AND REVEALED THE HIGH ESTEEM IN WHICH HE WAS HELD IN THE COMMUNITY. THE ACTIVE PALLBEARERS WERE: F.D. CKETT, T.R BILLINGSLEY, SAM LOTHLEN, EDD WOOD, L.M. PRATT, GEORGE T. ADAMS, W.M. DAVIS. HONORARY PALLBEARERS WERE W. H. MCCULLOUGH, G. W. IDLL, W. A. ANDREWS, W. CUNNINGHAM, AD. LINGSLEY AND DR. D. J. NEWELL.

HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS WIFE, 8 CHILDREN 25, GRANDCHILDREN, AND 16 GREAT GRANDCHILDREN. ONE SON AND THREE GRANDCHILDREN PRECEDED HIM IN DEATH.
CHAMPION DECATUR YANCEY WAS BORN NEAR THE TOWN OF LAFAYETTE, CHAMBERS CO., ALABAMA, ON NOV.23,1848, AND MOVED WITH HIS PARENTS AT NINE YEARS OLD TO LOUISIANA. HE WAS CONVERTED AND JOINED THE BAPTIST CHURCH AT THE OLD GRAY SCHOOL HOUSE IN CLAIBORNE PARISH, LA. WHEN HE WAS 15 YEARS OF AGE.
AT THE AGE OF 18, HE CAME TO HUNT CO, TEXAS, AND ON JAN. 23, 1870, HE WAS MARRIED TO MISS MARTHA JANE DE LONG OF HOPKINS CO. IN 1879,HE MOVED TO YOUNG CO., WHERE HE LIVED UNTIL HIS DEATH LAST FRIDAY. TO THIS UNION NINE CHILDREN WERE BORN. SIX BOYS AND THREE GIRLS, ALL OF WHOM SURVIVE THEIR FATHER EXCEPT ONE SON WHO PAID THE SUPREME SACRIFICE IN THE WORLD WAR. THE MOTHER OF HIS CHILDREN DIED MARCH 4, 1901. HE WAS MARRIED A SECOND TIME TO MRS. FRANKIE SHUMAKER OF GRAHAM WHO LIVED ONLY A SHORT TIME, AND ON DEC 14, 1905, HE WAS MARRIED TO MISS MARY CLEM OF GRAHAM WHO SURVIVES HIM.
UNCLE DOCK YANCEY, AS HE WAS FAMILIARLY KNOWN BY A LARGE CIRCLE OF FRIENDS, ALWAYS LOOKED ON THE BRIGHT SIDE OF LIFE. HE BROUGHT HAPPINESS AND SUNSHINE TO ALL WITH WHOM HE CAME IN CONTACT. HIS HOST OF FRIENDS REGRET TO LEARN OF HIS DEATH.
